Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

party:Happy Birthday JenB! party:

Congratulations on your fastie mile, too! That's a long time to run at that pace!

Corinna - I looked at the National Weight Control Registry site and was thinking that would have been great to know about when I went from 263 lbs to 199 lbs back to 263 lbs. Congrats on finding your focus, I know I was feeling lost without one earlier this month.

Oh, I've been there - not to 263, but losing and regaining. I think that's where my anxiousness about it is coming from this time. It's probably always going to be a little mentally rough after completing a major, major event. Part of the recovery, I suppose.

Corinna...I got the info from the registry awhile back. You need to get some documentation of your previous and current weight, like doctor's records. It's a neat program and has had some interesting info come out of it.

Anyone that runs with music have a sweet spot on their playlist that they repeat over and over for an energy boost in the rough patches? My thought for a Monday mixer topic would be guilty-pleasure running music. I'm kinda drawn to dance music when I run, stuff I wouldn't normally listen to.

Mel, this is good to know - I may have some challenges getting my documented weight since - ugh - my doctor closed his practice and I'm having trouble getting my records. :sad2: I did go to another clinic for a while after my second son was born - I hope they still have my records.

My best running music is mostly really embarrassing. My current favorite isn't SO bad: The Middle by Jimmy Eat World. I also have a techno version of Goodbye Mr. Bluesky that is doing it for me at the moment. The most pathetic, but still foolproof when I'm dragging: The Hamster Dance. :lmao:

So, call me lazy. I didn't run this weekend. We got 5 inches of snow, followed by a few hours of sleet. (I'm beginning to feel like I've seen an awful lot of sleet this year. Do I look like I need sleet?) It was sleeting Saturday morning, so our group run was canceled. I did NOT get up and run on the TM. This morning, DH and I went to the park and walked for an hour in the snow. I'm pretty sure that has to count as 2 hours regular walking. Then we shoveled snow. So activity-wise, I got the workout in. Unfortunately for Myrtle Beach, I'm not getting the miles in. I have a half-marathon in 2 weeks and I've run 15 miles since Goofy. Call it an extended taper, I guess. :rolleyes1

Sleet is the worst. Nobody needs sleet, and yet there has been an abundance this year. It is my most reviled weather. I am having the same trouble getting the miles in before the Princess Half - it's just not going well in terms of miles. All the mileage from training for WDW has to count for something on race day, though, right?

As of this afternoon, I am now done with week 2 of 3 running "special effects" for Erydice. I am definitely coming down with the thing that had my DS home from school all last week. I've had a sore throat for 3 days. I think the cough is starting up. I keep trying to beat the virus back with things like longish runs on the treadmill (I managed 7 yesterday before I couldn't take any more - stomach-wise, anyhow. Blah) and extra sleep. It seems like my brain is a little affected by this - I get concerned when I start to space things out. Too much like the effects of the concussion of 2008.

Still trying to pin down which Valentine's Day race to do. The choice is between a big, cumbersome event with a great tech shirt and no official timing and a smaller event with timing, but a less cool-looking cotton shirt. Currently, popular opinion seems to be favoring the race with the better shirt. I will keep you posted.

Time for a hot toddy, maybe. :thumbsup2

Debra – I saw some pretty good looking dishes on Man vs. Food when they visited Pittsburgh today. While they were far from healthy, they certainly looked tasty. Maybe it’ll give me a reason to travel your way one day, although I do hope to come see that nice baseball stadium someday.

Jackie – Feel free to live vicariously through me and my running club, we always have room for more. ;) The official meeting site for the annual meeting is someone’s personal “Party Barn” and the unofficial get-together site during the year is an Irish pub. (Seriously, I mean it.)

John – I always love to watch the Border Collies at the dog park, but don’t envy the canine energy the humans in those houses must have to contend with.

Mel – I don’t really have any single “go to” song, but I do have an iPod mix for running that mixes upbeat and slower beat songs. They were originally on a 1:1 mix, but now the fast beats are leading by about a 2:1 ratio. I am prone to going with the music and even dancing while running at times. The strange thing is that I have gotten away from running to music in the last year. That time is now used for what I call “meditative running” where I plan or review my day depending upon the time of the run. I really enjoy my time when I can run on trails and feel alone while I commune with God and nature. Good gong on the leopard shorts run, too. I’ll be wearing mine at the Run Wild ½ in late February. I figure they are the wildest thing I will have to wear. ;)

Corinna – I am right there with you on anxiousness at being able to maintain my weight loss, especially as I am approaching where I previously bottomed out before regaining 96% of that weight. While I am telling myself “not this time” now, I’d be lying if I said I was not nervous about failing just as I did before. My dynamics are different now, but that does not mean it can’t happen again. I guess that’s where Ohana and WISH can help make the difference for me (and I do like that feeling of being held accountable).

I’ m going to try to post an updated photo of Coco here
IMG_0460.jpg
. She is tough to photograph and turns or runs away whenever the camera is aimed her way. I tried to get a photo of her and Darcy’s dog Dru lying on my bed this afternoon, but Coco hoped off and walked away. It has been several years since the photo in my sig has been taken (where does the time go).

Speaking of “where does the time go”, my youngest (Patricia, DD, 19) thinks it’s time to be finding her own apartment with roommate friends. Apparently life with all bills paid by parents and minimal rules is too hard (I read this as “can’t have live-in boyfriend”) for her right now—I am sure that the $600/month she makes part time will get her real far these days. She always was the one who reality had to smack hard before learning a lesson, and sometimes it had to happen twice. The sad part is she is so much like me at that time and that she has to learn those lessons the hard way (just like me, sigh). Darcy’s been looking forward to the empty nest days far more than I, so I may need some extra cheering up if/when Patricia goes through with it.

Even with my assertions to the contrary, I was still watching the Austin Marathon registration with an occasional glance, when I saw the registration was down to the last 50 spots I strongly considered signing up, but then managed to resist. The next day I went back to check again and it was full (thank goodness, as I might have done something foolish and qualified for the Marathon Maniacs in the process! :rotfl: )

In reviewing my training for the month, I noted that I have run the most monthly miles since September 2007, and the 3rd most since I started running again in late 2006. Also, a 1200 yard swim I did last week was 5 seconds slower than my fastest swim at that distance last year. So, I do have a few things to be happy about.

Good Morning, Team!

Coco is a cutie - what a sweet looking dog! And kids.....it's such a struggle when kids are having a rough time. I think back to when I was 19 and I KNEW EVERYTHING. That was just a few weeks ago, I think.

Jackie - cute puppy pic! I can't imagine doing a race with a migraine. I had one fighting to take hold the night after the half, and that was part of the reason I'd considered just bagging even attempting the full. You have my utmost respect....

Today is a rest day for me - exercise-wise. Got a long work day scheduled, so I'm not even sure when I'll be getting out of here. Blech.

Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning, Ohana!

In spite of this weeks' question being all about ice cream, things are already starting to warm up at the W.I.S.H.-Wide Monday Mixer!

What is the Best Ice Cream Treat on WDW Property? Include a picture or a story, if you have one!

Come and join us - it's lots of fun! (plus, I'm about to bust out the beverages!) See you at the Mixer!

Oh, I forgot to say, invite your friends! I'm going to post invitations to the big threads, but if I miss YOUR favorite thread, please pass along our message of peace, love and ice cream!

Happy Belated Birthday, JenB! I hope you had a great day! I'm very impressed with your running such a fast mile on a treadmill. I hate them, so maybe that's what I need to do too in order to get off it as soon as possible. Just watching SportsCenter never makes the time past quickly enough. I'd much rather be running outside.

Richard, I love the picture of Coco! We had Goldens growing up that we took in as recsues too. One came from a beachfront hotel, so instead of wanting to chase tennis balls, she chased rocks. I guess that's what the guests threw to distract her when she was bothering them on the beach.

Mel, I like the idea of the running music theme for a Monday Mixer. I don't normally run with music, but when I have to do more than an hour on a treadmill (ugh!), I'll dig out all my punk and thrash. Nothing like angry fast music to keep you distracted from the fact you're not going anywhere and the scenery isn't changing.

Debra, when is the Bourbon Chase? We spent a lot of nights in Russia sitting around a fire in a backyard smoking Cuban cigars and drinking good scotch and bourbon. Getting to run for bourbon sure sounds good too.

Jackie, sorry to hear about the snow and sleet. I'd count it as cross-training. :)

Richard - Great picture of Coco. I understand about difficult dog photos. We've had black (or almost black) dogs for years, and they're almost impossible to photograph. I was thrilled to be able to get Sienna in the snow where she actually shows up. And I have to admit, I was dreading the empty nest thing, but I really, really like it. I can say that on this thread since DD doesn't venture over here. Don't tell the Indy people. She reads that one!

Allie - Yep, Sienna has grown up. Mostly. DD calls her stumpy. I think she has either corgi or dachschund in her since her legs are short and her body is long. But I mostly love my baby. And she looked really cute playing in the snow yesterday!

Corinna - I can't imagine how we got a mixer question about ice cream. :confused3 From Ohana? Now we'll have a whole list of places for future Ohana meets!

I did it. I got up and ran on the dreaded TM this morning. Almost didn't get to - when I turned it on, nothing happened. I kept moving the belt and moving the belt, and finally it remembered how to turn. I think it's time for a tuneup (read: removal of dog hair from the motor). But I got almost 6 miles in before I had to open the office. AND I watched last night's Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, so it didn't seem all that horrible.

Jackie

Good Morning, Cousins!

I did 6M Friday morning, and that was it for the weekend. The rest of the time I shopped, rested, or supervised ds's birthday sleepover. 12 yr. old boys are never "full", and can always find room for more sustenance (i.e. junk food). They are also big fans of ping pong, staying up late, and wrestling...

Jackie -- I am extra-proud of you for getting on the TM this morning, since I didn't manage it! I hope to do incline walking when I get home today. Actually, I need to commit to doing it so it will happen. :thumbsup2

John -- I always run to music, it keeps me moving. I have to have it on shuffle, so I never know what's coming next. :goodvibes

Terri -- Rest days are good. I recently accidentally had one, and I'm really glad. I do schedule one a week, but this was extra, and it really helped my energy level. :jumping3:

Richard -- What a beauty Coco is! You can just tell she is sweet by looking at her. I don't envy you the potential empty nest. When my chick flies I suspect it will be far away, and I am going to be very sad. ::yes:: I remember being 19, and having no idea of what it would take to support myself. Heck, when I was 19, I wouldn't schedule a class during "Days of Our Lives"...:rotfl2: Priorities, you know!

JenB -- :bday: Sorry I missed the big day, I hope it was filled with magic!

Jackie2 -- I can tell why you are so busy with the furchildren, mischief seems to be their middle name! ;) What a cutie!

Mel -- I know what you mean about the music, I would never otherwise listen to dance mixes of Bryan Adams "Heaven" or "Kids in America". Although it varies, right now I'm loving REO Speedwagon and Nickelback.

Allie -- My favorite southern phrase is, "I done told you"...My parents are from southern Missouri, and my relatives use that phrase all the time. :flower3:

Sending  to all the other cousins, let's have a great day and welcome to February! :lovestruc

Maria :upsidedow

Aww guys, you are so good to me :grouphug: when I am down. Of course I'll get through this (and love it one day) and who knows what the fickle 19 yo will decide in another day or week :confused3:) However, I still have her around to worry about and I will be happy with that while I still do. Until then I'll try to stay away from the chocolate cake (2 peices last night, ouch).

Jackie - Your empty nest secret is safe with me, I know one day I will be OK with that AFTER I adjust to it.

Maria - I'll hope for the both of us that the chicks do not fly too far away.

Corinna - "peace, love and ice cream"...I love that!

Welcome to February everyone, and thanks to all for the Coco love, too!

This goes back to the discussion several days ago about transitioning from walking to run/walk. Just got this in an email from Jeff Galloway and thought I'd share:

Getting Started Running (the first 4 weeks)

Our ancient ancestors ran and walked for thousands of miles a year—to survive. And each of us has inherited the adaptations to run. Aches, pains and injuries can be eliminated with the insertion of short running segments into a walk. Our bodies are designed to improve performance and efficiency, at any age, when we balance rest and exertion.

Walk first. Gradually increase an easy walk to 30 minutes, about every other day. Be sure to walk with a comfortable stride. Long strides are not recommended as they aggravate the muscles behind the leg and the shins. The running segments listed below are to be done at an easy pace also—short stride, with feet low to the ground.

Week 1
Mon—off or gently walk
Tue-walk 10 min then run for 5 seconds/walk for 55 seconds for 10 min, then walk 10 min
Wed-off or gently walk
Thu-walk 9 min, then run for 5 sec/walk for 55 sec for 12 min, then walk for 9 min
Fri-off
Sat or Sun-walk 10 min, then run for 5 sec/walk for 55 sec for 14 min, then walk for 10 min

Week 2
Mon—off or gently walk
Tue-walk 7 min then run for 5 seconds/walk for 55 seconds for 16 min, then walk 7 min
Wed-off or gently walk
Thu-walk 6 min, then run for 5 sec/walk for 55 sec for 18 min, then walk for 6 min
Fri-off
Sat or Sun-walk 10 min, then run for 5 sec/walk for 55 sec for 20 min, then walk for 10 min

Week 3
Mon—off or gently walk
Tue-walk 10 min then run for 10 seconds/walk for 50 seconds for 10 min, then walk 10 min
Wed-off or gently walk
Thu-walk 9 min, then run for 10 sec/walk for 50 sec for 12 min, then walk for 9 min
Fri-off
Sat or Sun-walk 10 min, then run for 10 sec/walk for 50 sec for 14 min, then walk for 10 min

Week 4
Mon—off or gently walk
Tue-walk 7 min then run for 10 seconds/walk for 50 seconds for 16 min, then walk 7 min
Wed-off or gently walk
Thu-walk 6 min, then run for 10 sec/walk for 50 sec for 18 min, then walk for 6 min
Fri-off
Sat or Sun-walk 10 min, then run for 10 sec/walk for 50 sec for 20 min, then walk for 10 min

Many new runners stay at the level of week 4 for a month or indefinitely. Others use the same progression using 15 sec run/45 seconds walk for weeks 5 and 6. Then, stepping up to 20/40 for weeks 7 and 8, and finally 30/30 during weeks 9 and 10. There is almost a zero rate of injury among those who gradually increase in this way and use 30/30 and then 1 min run/1min walk during the first year of running—including those who do a half or full marathon within one year.

Jackie

Hi Ohana,

Princessbride6205 has requested to join your team, so please welcome here when she arrives.

Maura

Good Morning, team!

Welcome PrincessBride!

Jackie - thanks for the walk transition to run/walk. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. I'm slow, but I'm a work in progress!

Yesterday was a day "off" from exercise. Today - hopefully - I'm back at it. I'm hoping to do my run/walk intervals for an hour again. I think that will work.

How many months until WDW marathon weekend of 2011????

Hey, no scaring the Newbie! Now she's going to think we're goofy...oh wait, I guess we are! :goofy:

:welcome:

Still not quite kickin' it this week. Maybe today's yoga class will give me a jumpstart. :confused3 I finished off the taffy from Goofy's last night, so I'm now officially out of the not so healthy or point-friendly treats. That's a good thing...

I think the Monday Mixer was a resounding success! Thanks to Corinna and Richard for reviving the patient! :goodvibes

Anyone else ridiculously eager for Lost? I am excited and also afraid of being disappointed/annoyed. My Sayid had better make it past episode 1! pirate:

Good Morning, team!

How many months until WDW marathon weekend of 2011????

Isn't the bigger question how many days until we can make our hotel reservations? After the huge bus lines to get back to All Star this year, I promised my wife we'd stay somewhere else, probably on the monorail.

I think the Monday Mixer was a resounding success! Thanks to Corinna and Richard for reviving the patient! :goodvibes

Oh, that patient wasn't in trouble - it was just on vacation. It does seem like it went pretty well! Now, we just need to decide what to ask them all NEXT week. Bwa ha ha ha ha! Oh wait - maniacal laughter is probably not the right sort of thing to attach to that statment. But the smilies menu isn't working for me today, so it will have to do.

A BIG Welcome to Princessbride6205! It will be great to have another Minnesotan in the mix! :)

Terri, I can answer! 11 1/4 months, I think!

John - As for making reservations, I have no clue when that happens or where I'll stay or anything, but I can't wait to find out! Monorail always sounds good, of course. As does somewhere with someone who can give me a ride in their car. Bwa ha ha ha ha! Oh, there I go again. What is UP with these smilies? Is it just me?

I am trying to sort out training plans for the next, uhhhh....five months or so. Just playing with the smartcoach on the Runner's World website. It does seem to think that I can get to a sub 28 5K by April, incidentally. Gotta combine that, though, with preparing for these back to back half marathons. I think it will be OK. My plan? Cook up a Marathon training plan and more or less split the long run over two days so I'm running back to backs for a few months before the race. Does that sound reasonable to some of you more experienced back to back racers?

Thank you for all of the welcomes!
Lilo & Stitch holds a special place for us. DH and I were in Hawaii when it came out in theatres, we saw it there, and remain fans. Also, I know Corinna & Maria from our Biggest Loser challenges, so I thought I'd fit in here.

I'm a new-ish runner. I've always been really fit (walking, dance, hiking), until I had DD and became a couch potato for 18 mos. I started exercising again early 2009: walking, elliptical, occasional short jogs, videos, light strength training. In Fall '09 I did the C25k, and now my goal is a Disney half marathon. So far, I can jog/run continuously for 4-5 miles, and further if I alternate with walking.

Name: Nicole
Day Job: Production Manager (entertainment production company)
Family: Me, DH Josh - This June will be our 5th wedding anniversary, DD Addie is 2 1/2.
Location: Minneapolis, MN - work downtown, live about 15 miles north of the city
Favorite race you ever ran: I haven't done any yet! I did a virtual 5k on Thanksgiving which was an awesome start to the day, so I think that will become a tradition for me
Best recovery food or beverage: I haven't actually raced yet, but after a training run I like ice cream.
TV Shows you watch or have loved: Currently watch The Office, Psych, Biggest Loser, 30 Rock, Glee, The Daily Show & Colbert (my Tivo is busy!). DH and I also like watching a few different Food Network shows. I'm a casual watcher of all things SciFi since DH is a huge fan. My fave SciFi show is probably SG1. All time favorite shows: The Muppet Show, West Wing, Friends & Frasier.
Races Planned this year: Virtual 5k Valentine's Day
Challenge Obesity 5k (April)
In the process of deciding other local races.
Really want to do the Wine & Dine Half, but doubt I can get off work then.
I have this crazy thought of trying to enter this year's Princess Half, since I may not get to do another Disney race until 2011. Figuring out how cheaply I can do this trip, and if I can convince DH in the next few days.
Meaning of DIS screen name: I joined the DIS when I was planning our Disney wedding, so I thought of myself as a princess bride (a little embarrassed to say that now), Princess Bride is one of my all time favorite movies, and our wedding was 6-2-05.

And in another post, you all were talking about 2010 Goals:
* My first official race
* More races TBD, including either a half or 10k
* Lose the last 3-4 pounds and then maintain my goal weight
* Average of 5 weekly workouts
* More sleep! I notice a huge difference in my mood and focus depending on how much sleep I get. This is a real struggle for me since I'm a night owl and also always trying to fit "just one more thing" into my day.

Inconceivable! :)

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. :lmao:

Welcome Nicole! :cheer2:It's great to meet you! :goodvibes Come on, do the Princess 1/2...it'll be a blast. I'll vouch for your good behavior - virtually - for your DH, if need be! :rolleyes1 I'm a big plan of the sleep, myself, for recovery, stress, weight loss, and just plain sanity. Unfortunately, I also think it's a highly underrated goal for most people.

Random Thoughts
  • I should be at work, or taking my run break. Instead I'm posting here because you folks are just too active.
  • I miss Jeanne too, need to track her down. Nancy, too.
  • Your dogs are cuter, and in some cases skinner, than my cats. Pixar is a cutie, though.
  • Bourbon Chase is in October (2011 for me), so we have plenty of time to plan ahead. :goodvibes
  • Didn't realize the Galloway was such a slow and steady build. Brilliant!
  • Why is it that everyone here is getting faster and I'm getting slower? :confused3 :rotfl:
  • Love the idea of a music sweet-spot Monday Mixer. I need to update mine.
  • Favorite Southern expression...."Bless his/her heart." What an insult! :rotfl2:
  • Marathon weekend can't come quickly enough. Neither can spring break! Brrrrr, it's cold here. :thumbsup2

Allie: Have you run yet, you naughty girl? What's the (hopefully good) news on NASA and DH. It looks bad all the way around, generally. :sad2: Sandy, too!

Corinna: Didn't realize until I put the race calendar together that you're doing two back to back halfs--sure, I saw your post on it, but didn't realize you were doing them the same weekend! :scared1: Love your plan to register for the National Weight Control Registry. How's Eurydice coming?

Mel: All seriousness, love the idea of more trail racing generally and the Dances with Dirt challenges. I need to tread lightly, using softer surfaces. How did you get started doing them--any advice. I run on trails occasionally, but drop them when I start training for other races. Should I keep them in the mix?

Speaking of mixes, currently loving dance tunes by Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Black-Eyed Peas. That's NOT what I love when I'm not, btw. Think Maceo Parker, who I also run to.

Rebecca: What Terri, et al. said about timing. I started my watch and never looked at it for the 5K. Was too busy walking (leisurely) and talking with Racey Tracy! :thumbsup2

Jackie: You did the responsible thing, both in opening the business and in running? Dang! Am I the only irresponsible one here? Running in the snow is no joke, though, especially if you don't have the gear and it gets icy. Better not to risk injury.

Richard: I don't know what to say, precisely, about DD's desire to move out. Part of growing up, I guess. This too shall pass. (Trust me, if she does move out, she'll see things in a different light once the bills roll in, she has roommates with vastly different habits, etc. :rotfl:) My parents couldn't get rid of me quickly enough, so I predict you'll adjust.

As for me: Headed out for a run after this post. That's the benefit of a flexible work schedule--I can wait until the middle of the day when it's warmer to take a running break. :goodvibes Of course, that means I work early in the a.m. and late at night...:confused3

Sci-fi/Speculative Fiction Lovers: I just read Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood, then re-read Oryx and Crake. Both based on the same futuristic world, different angles. Loved them, and wonder if anyone else has tried them. Mel, I though especially of you, as they deal with biotechnology & genetic engineering. The books are dystopian, which I like, and recommend them if you haven't tried them. Then again, I love Atwood, even if the Nobel committees do not. (Snobs.)

And to answer the When in Rome movie review question, Jackie. Nope, didn't love it. I wanted to, but it really wasn't a great flick, so I had a hard time reviewing it. Far more slapstick comedy than romantic comedy. I'll post a link to my review on Facebook, as I don't know if I can post it here. Now, you all know I'm highly critical of movies, so take that into account. OTOH, I was talking with some movie-goers before the movie, who knew I was going to review it. The husband proclaimed it a 2 1/2 star (out of ??? 4?? 5??) afterwards, while the wife called it a 1 1/2 star.

For a flick I did love? Crazy Heart!

Welcome Nicole!! Glad to have you with us.:yay:

Corinna, I didn't do many back-to-back runs in preparing for Goofy this year, so I might not be the best person to take advice from. ;) Still, that sounds like a good plan. You could also use a half marathon plan and then run half the long run distance the next day. I think the bigger key to getting through both races is not to go and and try to kill the first one. Running it at a slower pace than you would normally race at, somewhere around your LSD pace is ideal, will help keep you fresh for the second day. That was my approach to Goofy and it worked really well for me. I ran the half over a minute per mile slower than normal and didn't have the heavy, dead legs I was worried about.

Debra, I highly recommend running on trails. Their softness really helps cut down on the pounding your knees and feet take from running on concrete or asphalt. Plus, the soft and uneven ground makes your core work harder to keep you stable, making you a stronger runner too. Just remember to get some miles in on the pavement before a race. Like a treadmill, trails are soft and running on pavement again can lead to shin splints if you're not careful about it.
