Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Yikes! This thread is moving at lightning speed! I feel very behind right now.

I only have a few minutes right now, but I wanted to drop in and say hi  to my cousins so that you don't forget me. I also want to say :welcome: to all of our new cousins.

Once the kidlets are in bed tonight, I hope to have plenty of time for catching up with everyone.

Happy Saturday! :goodvibes

And a happy Saturday to you and all--the seasoned ones, and those of us still half baked!!

Lots of activity here...and some drama?! Suffice it to say that I am happy to be here, feel very welcome and would like to order a WISH shirt one day...

Mark had surgery yesterday, so I have been a bit busy. I got to bring him home, of course, but the surgery was a bit more involved than the run of the mill laproscopic procedure. I think it will keep me busy for the next several days...

I am hoping to get a workout in at some point today. I am a bit tired, but I am determined to do 3 strength/conditioning sessions this week, and here we are, last day of the week!! No excuses!! Just do it!!

I got a bit of a boost when I opened my email earlier. The 3 day event I do is a fund raiser and I have not started raising funds yet. I have not even made it widely known that I am signed up...Well, there in my email is a notice that someone made a donation on my behalf. And it is a big one! My cousin donated $231!! That is 10% of my goal!! Guess I better get training!!

Hi everyone! Hope all my teammates are having a good weekend. Harlow, the puppy (Richard, yes, she's a BC - with four other tailless dogs, it's strange to have a tail in the house now) is finally napping so I've got a few minutes to stop in and catch up on things.

I went for my first post-Houston marathon run today. It was our training group's annual "easy jog, bring your medals to show off, and eat donuts" run. Three miles on a trail around Rice University actually felt pretty good. I'm looking forward to getting into my training routine again to get ready for some spring half marathons. I brought all three of my Goofy medals, and the people with small ones from Houston felt gypped. Disney might be expensive but they sure have the best bling! :cool1:

I'll have to add my wedding cake story too. The top of our cake went all the way around the world. We got married in Bermuda, then back to Virginia, then moved overseas to Russia, and finally spent our one-year anniversary in Hawaii. Believe it or not, the cake still looked good. Didn't taste good, but I don't think any cake would after a year no matter where it was.

  • The wedding cake was sweet, but the gesture from the newlyweds was sweeter yet. :lovestruc
  • I'm serious about the Bourbon Chase in 2011. Because I seriously love bourbon.
  • I was joking about the coward bit. I know my older cousins know this, but for you young'uns.... I am serious, however, about wanting the team to have open dialogue. :upsidedow Unfortunately, I've got bigger things to worry about right now.
  • I love my RW intervals, a big proponent of them, but am easing back from a dependence on them. Why? Okay, it's lame. But I find it hard to run with anyone because I train alone. Can't match the intervals easily. I want to do more races with my WISH buddies. Hence....
  • Okay, John was kind enough to get the ball rolling. And my, those are cute. Other proud pet-owners want to share?
  • Dances with Dirt races. I've been to Hell, Michigan. Aptly named.
  • Let's make up something dark and mysterious for Terri's screen name. That way, she and Allie can be into some sort of covert Disney-race operations mission together. :lmao:
  • Overt plug for another thread: Post on Thank a WISHer Today! Keep the positive vibes flowing!

Corinna: Are the DL hotels closer to the 1/2 start? Enough to make a difference, given we all do the death march to the start for the January races? (Ooops, I guess I'm not over the Blizzard of 2010 yet.) DOOD, like your friends, are woefully undecided. Methinks he'll be annoyed if I announce I've made plans without him. Price, of course, is an issue. Hope you're feeling okay!

JenB: I never think of not getting a rental car. But for a trip only to DL, it makes a lot of sense. I do so love the CCI.

Sandy: Tabs are my friend. It's the only way I can keep responses straight. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone. ;) As for liquor, I'm pretty much egalitarian. Wow, DH's job sounds like a dream job. I hope he gets to keep it! Can you get us tours? :rolleyes1

Jackie: Thanks for the input on migraines. I'm not laughing the the snow in your neck of the woods. It's be hard to get out & run in that, and dangerous given how drivers, etc. aren't used to those conditions.

Mel: Ditto on all of it.

Rebecca: Don't worry about the Princess 5K. It's just excitement for your new adventure. It'll be really low-key and fun! :thumbsup2

Terri: I can't imagine how hard it must be to train if exercise is a migraine trigger for you. Mine tends to be light, smells and some foods, and I'd never experienced one that was (partially) induced by exercise. Scary!

Christine: PD for Mark--and you--for a speedy recovery. And whoo hoo on the donation from your cousin! Excellent! :woohoo:

John: And sometimes it is about the bling, isn't it? :rolleyes1

As for me: I wimped out on the outdoor run today--took it to the TM. Felt only slightly better that DOOD did, too. Oh, well, it gave me a chance to do some XT too!

Just moving my bio here, so that the 'Ohana Race schedule is posted on the first page. Check it out & send me any corrections or updates. :goodvibes

Name: Debra
Day Job: Writer
Family: Me, DOOD (Dear One of Debra), and two cats
Location: Pittsburgh

Favorite race you ever ran: Hard choice. Goofy 2008, probably, as my first races. Still looking to match that first high with distance races. I really like the Regent Square Run Around the Square, a little 5K through Frick Park. But it's a dog-friendly race! (No dogs myself, just like the event.)

Best recovery food or beverage: Bourbon, or is that a celebratory beverage? Chocolate Milk, PB sammy, yogurt

TV Shows you watch or have loved: I do so love television...Arrested Development, The Wire, Deadwood, ST (take your pick), BSG, Simpsons, Big Bang Theory, Masterpiece Theatre, The Daily Show, Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, Firefly, Freaks & Geeks, Aeon Flux, etc....

Races Planned this year: In flux, especially earlier in the year...but lots of local races this year:
  • WISH Virtual Valentine's Day 5K/10K (2/14) <-- Need to decide distance
  • Pittsburgh Half Marathon (5/2) <--Okay, I'm not really interested in this one; a placeholder for a better race hopefully
  • Regent Square Run Around the Square (8/??) <--Trail running & dogs!
  • Steelers 5K (8/30?) <-- My hometown team street cred needs to be renewed!
  • Disneyland Half Marathon (9/5) and/or Philadelphia RnR Half (9/18) and/or Pittsburgh Great Race (9/26?)
  • Pittsburgh ZooZilla 5K (10/3) <--I will conquer those hills this year!
  • Baltimore Half Marathon (10/16)
  • San Antonio Half? (11/14) <--Fingers crossed
  • WISH Virtual Turkey Trot 10K (11/25)
  • Disney Half Marathon 2011 <--And no one's talking me into the Goofy!

Meaning of DIS screen name: My initials, spelled phonetically. Bor-ING!

2010 Goals (cross-posted from the Leaner thread)

1) Balance in my workouts, adding more strength and core training CONSISTENTLY to help me run pain-free
2) Find one new athletic-hobby activity that I like. Not a class or training, but something that's active without feeling like I'm scheduling a workout. (Stolen from Connie:goodvibes)
3) Focus on 1/2 marathon distance @ 15-16 mile training cap (strange, I know, but I want to feel strong finishing a 1/2)
4) Cut 10 minutes off my 1/2 marathon time
5) Lose 10 pounds (and quit yo-yoing)

Corinna: No, I haven't really been using a training plan. I've just been working out on my elliptical and going out running somewhere when my husband's off of work. I know distance wise I'm fine, I'm just slow in general. :lmao:

Terri: They don't usually sweep people on the 5K? On the race site it says the pace for the 5K is 16 minutes per mile or faster. I know that's pretty much a fast walking case and as long as I can run part of it, I'll definitely be fine. I just really don't want to get swept or even cut it close.

Debra: I guess I just can't help worrying (about anything, really). :lmao: I know I'll really enjoy it when I do it.

  • Let's make up something dark and mysterious for Terri's screen name. That way, she and Allie can be into some sort of covert Disney-race operations mission together. :lmao:

  • Debra - too funny. Something dark and mysterious.....or just plain nonsense? Just to confuse people.... I love it!

As for the migraines - I know when I really go all out (like WDW 2010 Half - the cold and wet was really tough for all of us) I wasn't feeling great Saturday night. Tough times. My way of getting around it is to rest when I can, prior to a big race. So - Dopey just wasn't all that smart....

But - really - who said signing up for three races in three days was brilliant?

    :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I'm back at it tomorrow - trying my run/walk thing. It was hard on my knees yesterday, but I came home and iced them. Hope that helps....

I haven't ever seen it - I've seen people finish well over the one hour mark.

I could be wrong, but don't stress about the 16 minute mile for the 5K - I'v never finished it in 48 minutes due to my enjoying the walk through the park.

Good morning!

I am up to do the Feb bills before church..:surfweb:. Figured I would stop by and say hi before saying goodbye to my money...

I got my workout in last night. About 50 mins of core/strength exercises. Whew...it is pretty rigourous. Now, I just have to get back to my cardio. I have a busy day planned, but hopefully will have time for the TM before I hit the pillow tonight. Sunday is typically my outdoor workout day, but I think with the cold temps I am happy to have the excuse of staying home playing nurse to DH to keep me in the house.

Terri:That's awesome! I can definitely do that! Thanks!

No worries about the 5K. The half - there's ways of squeezing a few minutes cushion in there......but they will certainly sweep during the half and the full (been there!)

Good Luck - we expect a full race report!

You are right that if you are running any portion of this, you will be in no danger of being behind pace. I also agree with Terri - the 5K's I've seen run by Disney, they did not seem to be sweeping at all. It makes sense - they start early enough that even if people are doing 20 minute miles, they will still clear the park well before park opening, and there aren't any road closures to worry about. You're going to be awesome! :thumbsup2

  • I'm serious about the Bourbon Chase in 2011. Because I seriously love bourbon.
  • Dances with Dirt races. I've been to Hell, Michigan. Aptly named.

Debra, you know that I seriously love Bourbon as well. :thumbsup2 A 24 hour relay event sounds like crazy fun, too.

From the pictures of Hell, MI, I would say you're right. The Baraboo race would be an adventure in weirdness, but the timing is wrong for me on that one. Truth be told, I'm not actually that interested in being that dirt-encrusted.

The Disneyland Hotel is the most conveniently located as the expo is held in its convention center and the race start/finish is staged from the hotel's parking lot. Paradise Pier and GC are just up the street. The others that are within walking distance, well, there is no chance of freezing rain, anyhow, but it does add probably a mile each way, and if you're going to do much park touring beforehand, that trek could feel like a larger addition than you want. I had spent the three days prior to the race last year tromping through the park with my kids. Lots and lots of people stay over at those hotels on the other side of the parks, though, and walk to the start the mornings of the races. I don't think it's so bad, really.

As for me: I can't believe I forgot this in my goal setting (XP with my WW Blog):

While I was losing, I had read about the National Weight Control Registry. It is a long term study of successful weight maintenance and in order to register, you must have lost at least 30 pounds and keep it off for 1 year. Friends, I want to be part of the National Weight Control Registry, and so one of my new goals is to maintain my weight for 1 year.

Yes, this seems obvious, and it is not at all that I intend to stop maintaining at that point, but putting that specific timeframe on it makes it feel like a much more concrete goal. It is also something that many people who lose weight do not accomplish, and I love a challenge.

It will also put me well on my way to increasing my odds of staying at my ideal weight indefinitely, according to this quote from a CNNhealth.com article:

"The good news is that weight maintenance gets easier over time. After
two to five years, the odds of keeping the weight off increase greatly.
Achieving and staying at a healthy weight does take planning and
effort, but the rewards are great."

So along with my specific racing goals for the year, I believe I have found my focus once more.

Corinna: I love the National Weight Control thing-- sounds like a great goal. If I can lose the weight I'll try to join you there in a year or so. You make me want to spring for DL Hotel again this year-- know any deals?

I second the reassurance of not worrying about being swept during the 5K-- have fun with it.

Christine: hope your day goes well and that DH recovers quickly.

I'm a bit frustrated on the weight front as I've hit an annoying plateau. It's tough to stick to eating well when the weight doesn't budge but I'm trying to hang in there. I managed an 8:34 min mile last night just to see if I could do it. I made it without flying off the back of the TM but was glad to reach the 1 mile mark and stop sprinting (it felt like sprinting to me). I did a more leisurely pace for the rest of my workout.

Anyone heard from Jeanne?

Happy Sunday!

Checking in with an hour on the treadmill - again the walk 9 minutes, run 1. Left after an hour - my RP (DS, Sarah) wasn't feeling well - so we came home.

Now I've got my feet up (!).

:bday: :cake::rockband:party:

Happy Birthday, JenB!!!

You rock--with your mileage, pace, attitude and everything else--and I feel lucky to know you!

Christine – Congrats on the great start to the fundraising! Good luck with that, and can you send me (or post) the info on it?

Debra – Be careful about adding those alternative athletic activities, I started adding swimming and biking just as cross-training activities, then a year later I was doing triathlons :rotfl: However, if you think you might like either (or even both!) I highly recommend them as I love the diversity of training and I almost never feel like I am dragging myself to workout when I am doing all three in a week.

Rebecca – That’s how I felt before my first 5K race, by now I’ve forgotten how many races I have done (must be getting around 30 soon), but I still get some anxiety now and then before races—most recently at Disney before the marathon wondering if I could really do the full part of Goofy (which I did complete).

Terri – I am going with you being clone # 5,176 for now. An hour on the treadmill is great!

Corinna - I looked at the National Weight Control Registry site and was thinking that would have been great to know about when I went from 263 lbs to 199 lbs back to 263 lbs. Congrats on finding your focus, I know I was feeling lost without one earlier this month.

Jen – Congrats on the 8:34 mile! I have been contemplating trying a fast mile like that just to see if I can do it (although I am just hoping to start around 10:00 min/mile and work downward if I can), and Happy Birthday!

As for me, I had a good run today. My group started fast but I ran back with a woman who was having trouble keeping up (as our normally sleepy community had a woman attacked—she escaped without injury other than being scared—on the trails in that area). We still did 7+ 12 minute miles anyway and I was good with that. Next week I am going to try to not walk more than 1 minute/mile and see where that takes me. Afterwards we hung around Starbucks to share photos, show medals and share stories from our January marathons...needless to say my medals, photos and stories were a big hit, and I got to share stories of my WISH and Ohana Teams!

Chatty!! I like chatty... trouble is I tend to forget my comments... :rolleyes1

Yes, she does! :cutie:

* I think we should stir up some debate for Alli - make her post more often ;) (yes, I can be a troublemaker every now and again.. :rolleyes1)

* DL 1/2 may just be a dream - dh started his new job, but there is a long line of people wanting to be paid... and then the President may just use NASA contracts as a pawn to get the Health Care BIll passed :confused3 (DH new job is working on the new space shuttle - but there is some concern funding may be cancelled to pay for some of that small business incentive - and they are talking of OUTSOURCING the space stuff to CHINA!! :faint:

Hey now! Them's fighting words. pirate:

Oh, and we are feeling the NASA crunch down here, since we are a SPACEY town. :rolleyes1 Hope DH keeps his new job.

Ok, I've been under the weather this week, and this thread took of like a House a'Fire!! That's what we say down South, ya' know. :rotfl2:

I have not run due to the illness, cold, rain, etc. and boy does my body and my attitude feel it. Hoping for better weather this week. Don't have a dreadmill at my house so I am subject to Mother Nature.

Mel - Count me in the group that is thankful for your efforts with the shirts. :worship: I LOVE mine!!!!

Happy Birthday Jen B!!

Allie...we have NASA issues too. One of my friends' husband has been working there forever, but does not anticipate having a job within the next 6 months.

Christine...good luck with the fundraising. There's a website out there that's helpful, I think it's called firstgiving.com, that some other friends have used.

Terri...an hour on the TM :worship: My least favorite brand of torture. Good to know about the 5K. I'm trying to get DD6 to do it. She's up to about 2.3 miles now so I know she'd finish, but would not be fast.

Corinna...I got the info from the registry awhile back. You need to get some documentation of your previous and current weight, like doctor's records. It's a neat program and has had some interesting info come out of it.

The Dances with Dirt Green Swamp race is about an hour from here so I'm looking at that one. I'd like to do some trail running to see if the softer surface helps with impact issues for my foot.

I did 8 this morning...in leopard print. I figured my pants weren't any worse than what the golfers were wearing when I went by

I'm also still trying to wean off the intervals...after two or three years, I think they're harder to quit than caffeine. ;) I've been running the first couple miles of my LR, increasing the distance each time, then downshifting back to intervals. My speed is not stellar, but better than with the intervals.

Anyone that runs with music have a sweet spot on their playlist that they repeat over and over for an energy boost in the rough patches? My thought for a Monday mixer topic would be guilty-pleasure running music. I'm kinda drawn to dance music when I run, stuff I wouldn't normally listen to.

I'm not very focused this weekend, so this may be scattered...

First of all, a pet pic:

th_100_1229.jpg

This was earlier today BEFORE she and her brother grabbed DH's current half marathon training plan off the counter and ate it. His was on one counter, mine on the other. When we came in and saw shreds on the floor, he asked "your plan or mine?" Apparently they prefer my plan.

John
: Your puppy is absolutely adorable. I'm a sucker for border collies, although my boss has one and she's the only dog that's ever bitten me.

Debra - Count me in for the 2011 Bourbon Chase. I can clear my calendar this far in advance, and maybe even be able to pay for it by then. DH is more of a scotch guy, but I think I could convince him to switch for a weekend! And I'm still waiting on your review of "When in Rome..."

Terri
- My migraines are mostly hormonal, so I went so far as to "adjust" my schedule in advance of Goofy. I did the full last year with a migraine, as Debra will attest. Usually if I take drugs early in the AM, it goes away, but that day it came back mid-morning. Made the last 10 miles or so lots of fun!

Jen - An 8:34 mile is amazing! And :bday: Jeanne seems to have disappeared, but she has plenty to keep her busy. I was hoping she was going to do Tobacco Road with us, but I just checked and her name's not on the list, and it closed sometime last week.

Richard - Sounds like a great run today. I'm missing my group this weekend, so I have to live vicariously through yours.

Christine - Hope DH is feeling better. I would have been happy to share my "outdoor workout" with you today. We spent 2 hours shoveling snow. Not an activity we usually get to do around here, so the first 10 minutes were fun. The next 1:50, not so much.

So, call me lazy. I didn't run this weekend. We got 5 inches of snow, followed by a few hours of sleet. (I'm beginning to feel like I've seen an awful lot of sleet this year. Do I look like I need sleet?) It was sleeting Saturday morning, so our group run was canceled. I did NOT get up and run on the TM. This morning, DH and I went to the park and walked for an hour in the snow. I'm pretty sure that has to count as 2 hours regular walking. Then we shoveled snow. So activity-wise, I got the workout in. Unfortunately for Myrtle Beach, I'm not getting the miles in. I have a half-marathon in 2 weeks and I've run 15 miles since Goofy. Call it an extended taper, I guess. :rolleyes1

Now I get to make the call as to if and when our office opens tomorrow. My boss is in Dallas for a meeting, the only other employee with a key went to Daytona for the weekend and extended his trip based on road conditions, so I have the final say, and the only key to open. If I could find a dry road, I'd do my LR before I open! I hate having to be the responsible one and do the right thing. I'd really like to say "We're closed," but in all reality we probably can get to work. Don't want to be accused of being wimpy Southerners!

Jackie

Jackie - Is that Sienna? Wow!! She has grown into a beautiful dog!!
