Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Isn't the bigger question how many days until we can make our hotel reservations? After the huge bus lines to get back to All Star this year, I promised my wife we'd stay somewhere else, probably on the monorail.

We stayed at the Contemporary - and boy, marathon weekend was SO cold that it really didn't matter how long you had to wait - it was miserable! After the half I would have boarded any bus - regardless of where it was going, as I was just beat.

But I think I'll stay somewhere similar this coming year. Of course, I'd love the GF - but the budget couldn't handle it this year.

I'm the type that isn't happy unless there is a Disney trip to plan!

Someone take pity on me and tell me how the virtual races work -- I hear there's a V-Day one coming up?

Maria :upsidedow

Maria - the virtual races are easy - sign up on the thread. Grab a clippie if you want one. Run the distance on the day of the virtual race and post your time if you want to. For the Thanksgiving one, I posted some pictures I took of myself on the course, mostly because I was so lucky to get to run it around the Downtown Disney/Saratoga Springs area. That's about it! They did a turkey medal, and that was not something I got, but someone organized it and it was relatively inexpenxive and seemed like fun.

Nicole! Good to get to know you a little better! I am excited about the Challenge Obesity race! I'd better register soon. It sounds like we have a lot of shows in common. I'm so glad you requested to join us - what a great story about Lilo and Stitch!

John - good advice! I am trying to recruit someone to run the first race with who is slower than I am. I love dragging a slower friend through a race much more than I love being the slower friend dragged through a race. Both are good, though.

My favorite Southern expression: "I might could."

I miss Jeanne and Nancy too! Haven't heard much at all from Jeanne since the races. I sure hope you are ok, Jeanne!

I will put the "sweet spot" question on the mixer list. Sounds like a good one to me too!

Debra - I am so excited about my back to back halves! If I can finish both of them, that will make me a Saturn Half Fanatic right out of the gate. Bypassing you-know-what completely!

Eurydice is just fine - 2 out of 3 weekends are finished now. And I think I'm starting to get my brain around the show a bit. It was less fun to run it last weekend due to - ugh- this illness. It slows down my brain. This show has some memorable quotes that are going to stick in my head a long, long time:

•I got so mad, I swallowed a nail!
•Husbands are for children! (this one made my kids giggle when they saw the show)
•He is what we call "subversive!"
•Don't kiss a dead man. Their lips look red and tempting but put your tongue in their mouths and it tastes like oatmeal. I know how much you hate oatmeal.

And here's some advice from Eurydice's father on her wedding day:
"Cultivate the arts of dancing and small talk.
Everything in moderation.
Court the companionship and respect of dogs.
Grilling a fish or toasting bread without burning requires singleness of purpose, vigilance and steadfast watching."

I don't know why, but that quote always makes me think of Ohana! Maybe it's the companionship and respect of dogs. Maybe it's the singleness of purpose, vigilance and steadfast watching....

Oh, and this show, from my perspective is all about silk rose petals. Seriously, I dump them on people, I sweep and vaccum them up. I have conducted an extensive de-gritification campaign on them as well. Most of the grit comes from the good-n-plenty candies also used in the show. That, incidentally, is what candy tastes like in Hades. Good-n-Plenty. Just FYI.

:welcome: Nicole!! I'm new over here too!

Debra - No, kids are dropping like flies around here. DS stayed home due to tummy trouble, then felt good enough to go to school at 10:00 (still wondering if he had a test first block ) Then get a call from DD's school that she is sick, and I pick her up at 10:30, and been here every since. :scared: Oh and DH came home at lunch and said that a coworker was having to give away a cat (that DD regularly catsits for ;) ) and asked if we wanted it? :confused3 Uh, NO, we already run the ALLIE zoo as it is, but I do hate for the kitty to not have a home. I'm just not a cat person, and not sure my dogs are "cat" dogs. :rotfl:

Ok, that's all I've got. :upsidedow

um, pass the ice cream!:mickeybar

Thanks Corinna!

I just read through the V-Day Virtual Race thread, it sounds great! I'm going to ask Dennis what he wants to do, then sign us both up. Well, now I can't be taking it easy, I've got a race to train for! I'd better at least do a few miles tomorrow morning, and definitely not skip my 6 on Saturday. And I have to stop guzzling junk, I don't want to carry it with me on the course...

Maria :upsidedow

Nicole – Based on your “bio” info you look like you are so going to fit in here!

Mel -I love running on trails, just something special about being alone in nature, plus the aid staions at some local trail races can often be more like a buffet than an aid station;).

Maria – Thanks for recognizing my input, but Corrina has done the majority of the Monday Mixer work, and deserves the majority of the credit.

Debra - Nothing need be said, but thanks . Surely, the last year has had some real emotional moments for me (both high and low), and this will not be the worst. Patricia has stopped long enough to listen to her older sister to see that the planned apartment complex she wished to move into is definitely not a prime place. So I do think there is a chance she might try to be a little more thoughtful about the process, and she has asked me if I will look at any places she chooses—so I do feel a small bit better…and, yes, the day will come that I will come to enjoy the days after the girls are gone, especially since that will mean more $ available to go places to race with my cousins.

Corinna - Don't forget to explain the part of the Virtual Races where you get up at 3 in the morning and wait around for over an hour in the cold before running. On the back to backs, I continued my Ironman training into Goofy training, which was long bike ride on Saturday and then long run on Sunday, and it worked very well for me, so I think splitting the long run over 2 days is a great idea. Also, I ran the first day's race about 30 minutes slower than a normal half marathon for me and my legs were still fairly fresh on the second race day, which was probably the minute per mile slower that John suggested plus my time for photo ops.

I finally got around to hanging up my race medals in my office where I keep the rest of mine. I hang them along the perimeter of the room at the ceiling line. It just so happens that these 3 from the Disney are lined up on the center of the wall in front of my desk. Unfortunately, it's not he clearest photo

Been there, done that! ;) I guess I might even get snowed on if I stand outside :rolleyes1

Love the photo, those medals are definitely the most fashionable office decor I can imagine! :woohoo:

Maria :upsidedow

Allie: We are totally not "cat people" but wow, this new little kitten we have has stolen our hearts-- so cute  Our dog is less convinced this is a good idea but they are working on their issues ;) Good luck telling DD "no" to a cat. We didn't succeed when we tried, hence the new little fluffball sitting here helping me type.

Corinna: The show sounds interesting. I'm impressed by the 2 halves in one weekend. This half fanantic thing is getting out of hand.

Nicole: Welocme to Ohana!!!

I have to admit Hampster Dance is one of my "goto" songs in my running mix. I love the idea of the song as mixer question. It is funny that when running I listen to very different stuff than my usual fare.

We stayed at the Contemporary - and boy, marathon weekend was SO cold that it really didn't matter how long you had to wait - it was miserable! After the half I would have boarded any bus - regardless of where it was going, as I was just beat.

Too funny! That's exactly what I did. I was freezing, the line for All Star was several hundred people long, so I hopped on the bus to Key West and had my wife pick me up there. :)

Most of the grit comes from the good-n-plenty candies also used in the show. That, incidentally, is what candy tastes like in Hades. Good-n-Plenty. Just FYI.

Hey now, some us love the taste of licorice. Without it, we wouldn't have tasty treats like fennel, annise, absinthe, pastis, and Jagermeister. :)

Richard - I'm really glad your daughter has managed to talk some sense into her sister. Good you'll get a chance to check the places out, too.

And don't downplay your help with the Mixer (unless it's because you're ashamed of how it turned out...) - I greatly appreciate your work on it as well!

The medals display looks good! Mine are hanging in my closet, weirdly enough, except the more recent Donald which is just sitting on the dining room table.

Maria - Glad you'll be doing the virtual race (with or without a chilly preamble) - It is definitely harder to stay motivated for working out without an event looming, hence my many events looming, I suppose. Because I am likely going to be doing an actual 5K on Saturday, the virtual race is slated to be the first of my back-to back races, I suppose! Though, it will probably take place on a treadmill.

Allie - sorry to hear your kids are sick, but glad to hear they're not TOO sick! There is definitely some form of crud going around now. My cats are not dog people but my dog is definitely a cat-lover. Hope that kitty finds a home soon.

John - sorry about the Good-N-Plenty comment - my kids are not fans and these particular candies are on the stale side! The actor gave my son a few as part of the show and he tried them and promptly handed them off to my husband. I agree that licorice flavor can be quite wonderful when used responsibly.

JenB - what is it about that Hamster Dance??? I can't explain it either, but it works. Also, don't be impressed by the 2 halves until I finish them! It's not as impressive as Goofy by any means. It's like 2/3 of a Goofy. Like Goofy but you get to quit before Animal Kingdom and there won't be any snow and the water will be liquid. We hope!

Richard - I'm really glad your daughter has managed to talk some sense into her sister. Good you'll get a chance to check the places out, too.
My wife has often told me sisters are a wonderful thing, one of many things that I have never had in this life (although Darcy lets me share hers at times).

And don't downplay your help with the Mixer (unless it's because you're ashamed of how it turned out...) - I greatly appreciate your work on it as well!
Nothing to be ashamed of there, I am proud of our work. It's still going strong today. I suspect we'll find we can be a good team with the kinks of the process worked out.

The medals display looks good!
Thanks! I like hanging them in the office because so many people coming in never notice them, so it is like they are hidden in plain sight. My Operations Manager likes to bring people in there in my absence and then watch their expressions when he tells them to look around.

John and Corinna - I appreciate that you both support the safe and responsible use of licorice.

Jen - You can still be dog people and open up your heart to a cat. I learned that few years back, although maybe I should ask my DD if she plans to take her cat with her.

Terri - I have always had a Disney trip planned for a long time now, even before the current trips end I am plotting my return. I like it that way!
Maria - I should have figured your weather was that bad for your wait at the virtual start.

Richard - I've been working on a medal display for home, but now I'm reconsidering. I spend so much more time at work, after all! And more people will see them there. After my first half (Disney '08), DH ordered one of the really nice framed awards, so I have a Donald medal in my office. The problem now is that people think that's all I've run.

Nicole - :welcome: More sleep is a good thing. I'm working on that too. Unfortunately, I'm using that as an excuse to talk myself out of early morning workouts. I'm not sure that's the way it's supposed to work.

Debra - Read the review. Nicely done. I think I'll wait for the video rather than spending the $40 that it inevitably costs us to go to the theatre. And this running in the snow thing? Ridiculous. DH and I went to the track this afternoon. Gate to the park was locked - closed. So we parked outside and tried to run up the road to the track. Slipped a couple of times on icy patches. Got close to the track and laughed. Not a chance. I think the sun completely forgot to shine on it yesterday when it was out. And today's rain didn't wash anything away. I want my NC weather back! And they're calling for MORE SNOW this weekend.

John/Corinna - I only did one back-to-back run this year in preparation for Goofy. Then I did exactly the opposite of what John suggests. I ran a strong half. Do what he says! I would have been fine if I'd been running back to back half marathons. I even said to DH at the halfway point that now I knew I could run consecutive halfs. But a half and a full? Not when I run the first half too fast.

Terri - We were at POFQ. We looked longingly at the line for AKL and almost got on that bus. They were getting on the bus immediately, and we had to wait for 4 buses. I would have paid someone to drive me to my hotel. (Remember that next time, Debra. Not only do I need your blanket, I also need your car!)

Jen - I agree that the Half Fanatic thing is getting out of hand. I spent half an hour at work today trying to figure out my schedule so that I could qualify for a higher level! I absolutely must find an April half so I can have 6 consecutive months. I thought I needed June; then I remembered that I ran one in December so once I finish Indy in May I'll have 6 if I run one in April. Looks like the Flying Pirate will happen after all...

DH called me at work this afternoon and asked me if I was going to run this afternoon. Hadn't planned on it, since I did 6 miles yesterday. Figured I might as well though, since there's more snow planned this weekend and I may miss yet another LR. Came home and changed and was all excited about running, so I was truly bummed when we couldn't find anywhere that was clear enough.

And work today - ugh! After having to make the decision about opening or closing yesterday, I arrived this morning and was greeted by our installers telling me our trucks had been broken into last night. 3 had broken windows and another 2 had storage bins pried open. So I spent my morning dealing with the police department and our vehicle management company scheduling glass replacement, after calling my boss and starting his morning off at the conference with a cheery good morning! I suggested closing tomorrow just to cut our losses. Really could have used that run today!

SO THIS IS WHERE EVERYBODY IS!

I guess that's the reason I wasn't getting any updates recently....our old thread is kaput! I just read over all 12 pages of this very dynamic thread....truly LIGHTSPEED! (I'm a Star Wars fan....don't know nuthin' 'bout that Trekky stuff.)

First of all, A BIG shout-out to Richard for taking over the management of the Ohana thread......and a BIG thank-you to Debra for the great job she did this past year. I did it the first year....and not nearly so well....and I know firsthand how much work it can be. Props to you both.

Thanks for your concern, everyone........I am fine....TRULY! In fact, I just saw my doctor yesterday and he gave me clearance to go ahead and basically do whatever I want. It's been a long haul, but most my issues have or will be resolved. Right now I just want to pretty much put the whole thing behind me.
I've also been busy with closing my husband's business and getting him settled into the new out-of-state digs that he occupies mid-week. It's been a big adjustment and I really do miss him during the week.

Yes, I actually had been planning to do the Tobacco Trail half and did not realize it had closed. In fact, my husband was supposed to be on-call that weekend and was in the process of getting it switched. What a bummer....I wonder if they will open up some new slots. I even wanted to have either a pre- or post-race party at our home for all the WISHers and was wondering if people would be willing to travel about 40 minutes to get there.

Welcome to all the new cousins...... we are really growing here.

I know it's a little late, but here'

s my mini-bio:
Name: Jeanne
Day job: presently unemployed!
Family: Hubby John (a non-posting WISHer), 4 grown children (2 of whom will be getting married this year!!!!!)
Location: just north of Raleigh, NC
Favorite race: You don't have to ask me that......ING NYC, for sure!
Best recovery food: Chocolate milk, beer (but not together!), PIZZA!
TV shows: Survivor, Amazing Race, Nip/Tuck, Hung, Mad Men, 24, Big Love.
Race plans for 2010: I wanted to do the Tobacco Trail but it seems I waited too long.:sad1:
Also doing the Wine and Dine in October with my entire family and their SO's. We plan to do it as equally handicapped relay teams..... should be VERY competitive!
Dis name: DUH! First name, middle initial....I was lazy!
Goals for 2010: To look sizzling hot in my mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom dresses! Needless to say, I have ALOT of work to do in less than 4 months. For now, that is my mission and I really need to get cracking!

I think that's it for now......it's good to be back!

SO THIS IS WHERE EVERYBODY IS!

Hooray! Jeanne is back! (Sorry we kind of left you behind for a minute there, Jeanne...we're not supposed to do that!!!)

Glad to hear you're doing well. Have your fingers thawed yet? How about John's? I was concerned about him at the water stop, but what could we do???

Have we discussed Big Love before? I was watching last week's biggest loser, and I swear, the woman who went home has a personal trainer that looks and sounds exactly like: Wanda!!! I'm not sure I could take Wanda seriously as a personal trainer.

Jackie - Oh my gosh - I can't believe that about your trucks being burglarized! How horrible and frustrating. I know there is a lot of extra hassle there as well as a feeling of, well, yuck. Hope it's not too much trouble to get everything repaired and that the insurance stuff goes smoothly.

Richard, I am a scattered poster tonight (and possibly always) - should have included this in my previous post, but...scattered!

My wife has often told me sisters are a wonderful thing, one of many things that I have never had in this life (although Darcy lets me share hers at times).

I have a sister, two step-sisters and one ex-step sister, (though my father and step-mother eschew the term "step") so I know a thing or two about sisters. They can be great. They can also be....challenging. But when they're great, they are really, really great.

John and Corinna - I appreciate that you both support the safe and responsible use of licorice.

I am still not having any luck with the smilie menu, so I will just say this:

Bwahaha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Thank goodness we have arrived at a licorice consensus. :)

Bwahaha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Thank goodness we have arrived at a licorice consensus. :)

Corinna - In the midst of a challenging week, this was good for a out loud laugh. Thanks, I needed that. Your assessment of sisters sounds like my assessment of brothers, though probably with more hurt feelings and less bruising.

Jeanne - Sorry if we lost you for a bit, but we are all glad you made the transition to the new thread.

Jackie - It is a really good feeling to see people impressed with my running accomplishments at my office, my staff enjoys bragging for me (I kind of get embarrassed by it.). Occasionally someone who wants to get started asks for advice, and then they find out I do love to talk about running...

Good Morning Team!

LOVE the medal displays! Be proud of what you've accomplished! There are certainly worse addictions to have - although my husband has considered an intervention for my Disney addiction....

I'm glad everyone agreed that 2010 marathon weekend was silly cold! I think a major part of my inability to finish the Goofy on Sunday was how cold I got on Saturday, and how much it took out of me. I had bought the Race Retreat on Saturday - to give my much-quicker daughter a place to wait for me - but she was still shivering when I got there. Absolutely crazy......

Not much activity for me yesterday. Just the standard work - then home. My daughter is fighting some crud, and I was on 7-up detail. There's some nasty bugs going around - and I wish this one would just disappear.....

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Good morning, cousins!

JenB was right....the ATT events have closed due to already reaching capacity. I am bummed, but completely understand. A large part of the course is an out-n-back and the trail just isn't wide enough to support massive numbers of runners going in both directions at one time. (BTW, I looked at the list of registrants and didn't see Jen and Butch....did they get in?) In any event, John and I will be there to scream-team!

Corinna - In the midst of a challenging week, this was good for a out loud laugh. Thanks, I needed that. Your assessment of sisters sounds like my assessment of brothers, though probably with more hurt feelings and less bruising.

Ah, you haven't met my sister. We were like streetfighters in our youth, I tell you.

Always glad to provide a chuckle. I'm not sure if the funny part was my maniacal laughter or the licorice consensus.

2010 marathon weekend was silly cold!

A truer thing was never spoken than that.

Sorry you've got some crud at your house too. I am with you on wishing it out of existence. There really is some nasty stuff right at the moment. Hope your daughter feels better soon and that is the last you see of this one in your house.

Good morning, cousins!

JenB was right....the ATT events have closed due to already reaching capacity. I am bummed, but completely understand.

What a bummer - that was FAST! I hate when that happens! I'm sure you'll have a great time scream-teaming, though.

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

That's me doing the happy dance. I just received confirmation that all four of my children plus their respective spouses and boy-/girlfriends are in for the Wine and Dine Half Marathon! Now we have to put together our teams so we're equally handicapped. We'll be a total of five relay teams. This is going to be so much fun and a great bonding experience. So glad I've already booked that Grand Villa!
