Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Hi Cousins! It's been awfully quiet here the past few days. I hope that means everyone is out enjoying nice weather and not stuck at home staring at a computer screen. That's what I was doing last weekend. I ventured out into BFE to run the fifth and final race I needed to complete the Texas Marathon Challenge. The race was held in a tiny town (nearest hotel was 35 miles away) in the middle of the Davy Crockett National Forest. It was a really small race, about 300-400 people, most of whom were running the half. I've got a race report online if you'd like to go read it. Suffice it to say the race was miserably hot, but I made it. They gave out really cool medals too. :)

Hi Team 'Ohana! My name is Whitney and I'm 24. I ran my first half marathon this past Jan (2011) at Disney and I'm hooked! I also ran in the ESPN 5k and my DBF and I will be heading to Disney in 23 days to complete the Expedition Everest Challenge. Then in Sept we're heading to Disneyland to get our Coast to Coast Challenge medal. Finally, in Oct I'll be heading back to WDW with two of my college roommates for their first half marathons at the Wine & Dine.

I've had great support from friends and family so far but can't seem to find anyone that's willing to head back with me for the half in Jan 2012. That's why I came here. I don't necessarily need someone to actually run with but figured it'd be nice to at least "virtually" train with others. So after reading through your thread, if you don't mind, I'd like to join your "family"?

Welcome Whitney! You're more than welcome to join the 'Ohana family. After you submit to our hazing rituals of course. :lmao: Don't worry, it's pretty painless. We'd like to get to know you a little and have some questions help with that. All of us have posts at the beginning of this thread answering the same ones, so you can use those to get to know us too. :)

I don't know...I still have the scars ;)

Welcome Whitney! Looks like you have a pretty good race schedule going. What kind of training do you do? Any particular program that you follow?

:welcome: to the family, Whitney! :goodvibes

Thanks! I'm really excited to have a running family to talk about everything with. Especially since I'll most likely be running some future races by myself, it'll be nice to know fellow runners and get to meet new people!

Scars!?!? :scared1:

Thanks! I really like the Disney races and am in the process of finding some more local races too. Ive been following Jeff Galloway's training programs. When training for my first half I used his run/walk interval with a 5 min run / 1 min walk ratio but it went out the window at the race and we ended up running the majority of the race so I still use his schedule but now I typically just walk for 1 minute after each mile. 5Ks I usually run the whole thing.

Let me add a Big :welcome: for Whitney! I've read a couple of your TRs, and I'm looking forward to more! I'm also a little envious you are doing all those Disney races, sounds like a ton of fun -- and we will need more of those awesome reports so we can live vicariously through you! :thumbsup2

Sorry I'm not being very cousinly of late -- all our energy is focused on Dennis's race on Monday, and getting me and ds ready to fly to St. Louis for my dad's 75th birthday party on Saturday.

I think I can pretty much count us as "in" for the Hershey Half! Really looking forward to it -- this will be interesting as Dennis has always said he won't drive more than 4 hours and this is 7...I guess he meant he wouldn't drive more than 4 hours unless it was for a race! :rotfl:

I'm lovin' the Davy Crockett medal, that is such a fun design!

I promise to be more coherent after our long weekend -- what do you mean you don't celebrate Patriots' Day?! :rotfl2:

Maria :upsidedow

I don't know...I still have the scars ;)

But, Mel, you have recovered nicely from the reconstructive surgeries! :rotfl:

Whitney - In all seriousness, welcome; it's nice to have another great running team member around to share the joys and pains of our running lives (and all the other fun details in between, too). We are definitely pro-dog here; how are you with respect to sci-fi?

John - Congrats on the Bear Chase marathon and the Texas Marathon Challenge! I have considered that race the last two years but was conflicted due to my tri training, maybe next year... Small world in that you know that guy from my race photo, makes me glad that I was the one passing him.

Nicole - It's good to see you are making progress with the Galloway program you are following. I am sure you will be more than ready for your 10K in May.

Maria - I definitely understand Dennis being more likely to drive a long distance for a race more than for other reasons. There's nothing like a goal race for some driving motivation.

A great big  and :wave2: to all the other cousins out there!

AFM - I wish I had more time to spare to keep up with this thread these days. However, my training only allows for so much extra time, especially right now as I am in the peak training weeks of my 20 week program. Race day is 37 days away and I believe I am ready to be able to do the course now, so hopefully the next 7 weeks of training are more to improve myself to be able to do even better. The biggest drawback of timing for me occurs next week when my longest run of the training program falls on my wedding anniversary. :rotfl: Oh well, I will adapt, overcome and improvise my way through a successful anniversary.

Have fun everyone!!

Welcome to Whitney! It's always great to meet a new cousin and it sounds like you'll fit right in here!

Sorry I've been sort of...off in my own world lately. I guess it's part of the cycle, but I still feel badly about neglecting my DIS peeps!

Richard - your race is coming up so fast! Too much training is a better excuse for not being around much than the one I'm going to put out there in a bit! I'm glad you are feeling confident about completing the distance. I hope you think of a way to make up for having to train so much on your anniversary!

John - GREAT medal! What a riot. :) Congratulations! And thank you for carrying out the "hazing" and "welcome wagon" duties!

Maria - Is Dennis doing the marathon on Monday? How did I miss/forget that??? Tell him good luck from all the cousins. I hope he has a wonderful day and that the weather is pleasant!

Debra- It is probably a little ridiculously late to wish you a happy birthday over here....Thank goodness for Facebook. I'll take the opportunity to wish you a very merry UN-birthday, though!

As for me: I'm glad to say that that knee-tendon thing I was contending with after the Princess seems to be completely fine now. I did about a month of little to no running and subbed in some other cross training and slacking off. It was probably high time for that, really.

I'm all registered for the Twin Cities Marathon in October, Goofy in January, but right NOW, I'm thinking about Triathlons. I know I had mentioned doing one at the start of June, but the one I was looking at...darn it, I looked at the times for last year's swim and I am a good 15 minutes slower than the slowest one. Which could be kind of annoying/frustrating doing circle swimming laps in a busy pool race. Some of you also know (From facebook) that I'm looking at a sprint in July in Michigan. Which I think I probably will do, though I haven't registered yet.

I am also looking at a different Olympic distance race in June (backwards, I know!). This one looks like it's a better mix of ages and abilities and has a lake swim, so that should be...less like me creating a logjam in my slowness. It's almost full, though, so I have to decide quickly! Agh! The stress!!! There is also a different race - sprint distance the same day that might (might??) be a better choice...

My swimming slowness seems like it's improving already, but I just don't know how much improvement I can expect to see in 6 weeks. The rest of the training seems right on the money to dovetail with what I've been doing already. Now I just need to get a bike...and a wetsuit...and some special, special shorts.

In other news, I continue to muddle along with the diet side of things. I tried and tried with the new WW plan, but I just am not gelling with it. My weight is up again, and so that is not what I was wanting!! I did so well with the old plan (which they have just thrown out) and so the new plan that doesn't work so well for me feels like...betrayal. Ultimately I've decided it is better if I just move on and now there are a bunch of WISHers over at Myfitnesspal.com. If anyone else is interested, you can find me over there by the same name you find me by over here. :)

All righty - I'd better get a move on if I'm going to run today...which I'd better if I'm going to follow that training plan I churned out earlier today...

As it turns out my coach turned next Week's schedule completely around and kept me with only 75 minute long speed bike session next Thursday for my anniversay! So it will be a nice night out after all. OTOH, I do have two straight run days on Tu/Wed but I can deal with that. I even get Easter off (pending the 75 mile ride/8 mile run brick workout the day before:scared1:)

:scared1: isn't strong enough for this - That is a lot of brick!!! I'm sure you'll rock it, though.

That's great that your coach was able to rearrange things so nicely for you!

I'm not going to lie, I had no idea what a brick workout was but after a handy google search I'm with Corinna that :scared1: isn't strong enough for that. What exactly are you training for? I'm assuming a tri but what are the specifics?

Would you believe the Expedition Everest 5K?

No, I thought not....well, to back up a step a brick workout is a series ofn2 consecutive workouts with an immediate transition, mostly in training for a multisport event such as a triathlon. In my case, I am training for an Ironman triathlon which will be on May 21st.

Richard - I had not noticed your 80# clippie before. SO shiny! Congratulations - that is a dramatic loss!
