Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

John – I know I have seen it several places, but can’t remember how often (if ever) I have seen subject of slowing/stopping covered officially. However, as a run/walker I do pull over towards a clear area and glance back before I stop running–I just wish more would do the same.

I hope none of you thought I was directing my frustration solely at the run/walk crowd. That wasn't my intent, and I'm sorry if anyone felt I was singling them out. While it's true that people who run/walk do stop more often than the rest of the runners, there are plenty of runners stopping to talk on the phone, tie their shoe, stretch their legs, etc., who create traffic problems behind themselves too. To me, it's a matter of politeness and safety no matter why you're stopping or slowing down, especially early in a race. After a few miles, most races have spread out enough to where you're not running directly in front of or behind someone else, so your chances of having someone run into you when you slow down are lessened. During the first mile or two, though, it's hard for anyone to get separation even if the race is using a wave start, and almost impossible if it isn't.

Anyway, that's enough soap boxing for one day. Time to finish up work and head home to watch the rest of the Olympic DVR shows. :)

I did 6M Saturday, an hour of incline walking yesterday and 4M this AM.

Yesterday we took ds to the Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science. It was the last day, and we weren't the only ones who waited until the last minute.

I added three songs to the ipod shuffle -- Eddie Money's "I Think I'm in Love" and "Two Tickets to Paradise", and Beyonce's "Single Ladies".

I'm looking forward to less tv time and more rest since the Olympics are over.

Maria - What did you think of the HP exhibit? I took my two older kids during Christmas break and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We were going to go back this weekend to see it again (Rob didn't get to go with us when we went - the car broke down and someone had to wait for AAA), but our weekend ended up being way too busy. It would have been funny if we ran into each other there. :goodvibes

Hey Julie!

We thought the exhibit was extremely well done -- and my ds even commented, "It's just like a reallly good theme park, you exit into the gift shop." :rotfl2:

We had people in our group who came all the way from CT. I hope they thought it was worth it!

That is priceless! :rotfl:

Nope, the thought never even crossed my mind, John.
Enjoy the rest of the Olympics on the DVR--I still have a few hours myself. :happytv:

Rebecca - it's great to hear from you! I am sorry to hear there's been illness in your house. I hope the medicine doesn't disagree with you too badly! You know I signed up for the 5K as well - I hope we'll have a chance to meet up before/after/during! Are you leaving for WDW soon? I'll be around through Friday.

John - I have seen slowing and stopping advice on the Disney final instructions - not sure I've seen it elsewhere. It would be nice if there were a universal signal or two, like there are in biking. I have seen an occasional runner point to the left or right before they went one direction or another. I wish I had a rear-view mirror on my WISH visor! I have read cautions about slowing or stopping during a race many times. If I really have to STOP, stop, like fix-my-shoe-or wardrobe-malfunction-stop, I am always sure to get fully off of the roadway. Yeah, I've had to do that more than once.

Mel - a weekend at AK sounds like a fantastic getaway! Looking forward to seeing you soon! Are you staying at AK for the Princess weekend? I'm having a hard time keeping track of where everyone will be this trip. I will be at All Star Sports, rooming with Racey Tracy.

Richard - the "flat self" trip is something that my son's class did in 2nd grade. The hardest part is getting the really LONG paper - they always have it at schools, of course, but what about the rest of us?? The kids lie down on the paper and someone traces them and then they color themselves and mail themselves to family or friends in another part of the country. They'd take pictures and send information on the area, so the kids got to learn about other parts of the country. Actually we did the same thing in church one time years before 2nd grade - I forget why exactly, except it was summer and kind of fun.

Darn those race-conflicts. It always seems like the same races are problematic for me year after year. As you say, maybe next year. Sounds like you had a good time even without the race, though!

Congratulations on a great month and that half marathon PR, too!

Nicole - isn't the sunshine lovely?? We still have a lot of ice on the sidewalks here, but I'm hoping that soon I'll be running outside again, too!

I have the same experience of running faster outside than inside. I'm not sure if it's because of my particular treadmill or if I actually can't run as fast on a TM cause it's so dull or if it's the incline or what. Some people say the TM is easier, but I am always faster outside, too.

As for the race, I think your plan of starting conservatively and building as you go makes good sense. A lot of people think that that is the smartest way to run a race, and I can't disagree, though I don't always manage to start slowly enough. And in January, I did the first 5 miles with some people who run faster than I do, then peeled away around the TTC and did my own thing from there. It worked fine for me, but I don't actually recommend it as a strategy! I will go ahead and give you some advice, if that's OK. You can obviously take it or leave it:

1. "Listen to your body" (just like the Bear in the Big Blue House says to Tutter in the potty training video  ) - it doesn't matter what the numbers say, you need to run at the pace that feels comfortable to you, whatever that may be. The most important thing is how are your lungs doing and how is your heart doing? This is a long haul, so you want to start out comfortable and be at a pace that you can keep going with, and the best way to decide what that is is not based on numbers but rather on how your lungs and heart and body feel. Just find your groove like you do on a training run. You'll know it when you find it.

2. "Trust your Training" - It's gotten you this far, so usually it's best to stick with the intervals you're used to, the pace that feels like what you trained at, the fuel you used on training runs, and even the clothes you usually wear. I think someone had a phrase for this...I'm not sure if this is exactly right, but it's something like "go with what brung you this far.":confused3 It's true, though, in most cases.

3. Enjoy the heck out of this race - it's going to be a fun one, I can feel it! :)

Maria - I didn't know there was a HP Science Museum exhibit! Oh, I hope that one comes here soon. It sounds really cool. We loved the Star Wars exhibit a few years ago - all those models and the videos from the designers and everything - is it the same kind of exhibit? I also have the "Single Ladies" song on my shuffle. Nothing like fresh music on the shuffle! My latest fun song on there is...the weirdest version of the Lonely Goatherd from The Sound of Music that I ever heard.

The Mixer is up - late, but the discussion this week is about why we keep going back to Disney. Pina Colava is the drink du jour.

As for me
- Good news - we are having a bit of a thaw here! My glacier has a small skating rink and river at the base of it now, and I am so glad I dug out the storm sewer so that it's not a lake instead.

I spent the weekend painting a backdrop for Suburb: The Musical. It is a crazy time to have another project going for me since DH is still finishing up a show he's working on called "Toast." Too much stuff at one time!

Running-wise, I'm just doing the shorties now - 3 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday, maybe some strength training later tonight - I had to miss bodypump today because DS is home sick. I was going to sign up for a TRX class, but looking at the calendar, I just don't think it's worth it this session. I'll miss 2 out of the 7 classes, already. Maybe next session.

WW-wise, did I mention I'd gone to meetings led by my Marathon weekend roommate, Lysa? I'm planning/hoping to get the lifetime achievement award on Wednesday for 6 weeks of maintaining. Well, lifetime membership, anyhow. I joined WW for the first time in maybe 2001? It would be nice to actually get their darned lifetime status finally!

Nope, the thought never even crossed my mind, John.
Enjoy the rest of the Olympics on the DVR--I still have a few hours myself. :happytv:

That's good to know. Hopefully everyone else feels the same way.

We've got it down to just a few hours left too. Mostly cross-country skiing from Saturday and Sunday. What did everyoen think of that hockey game yesterday? I've got a sunburn because of it. There were so many people at the bar I went to (a Canadian bar with some of my Canadian friends), the inside was SRO and they set up several TVs in the parking lot for the rest of us.

John - I certainly didn't take your frustration personally. I have been equally frustrated at races at groups of people walking and covering the entire road, so I understand your irritation. I do find that my first run segment is usually the longest, for the exact reason you mentioned - it's entirely too crowded to stop and walk. And I'm not even a true hockey fan, but that was the most amazing game!

Maria - I'd love to see the Harry Potter exhibit. And our museum does the same thing - all exhibits exit into the gift shop. I don't even consider it strange since I'm so used to it at WDW!

Mel - I'm so jealous. I can't even imagine being close enough to go over for the weekend. DD would absolutely die if she could celebrate her birthday regularly at Disney. She has, however, celebrated two of them there, thanks to marathon weekend timing!

Corinna - "The Lonely Goatherd." I love it! Glad to hear that your glacier is finally beginning to thaw. Congratulations on making WW Lifetime!

Nicole - I actually read a really good explanation of why we're faster outdoors, but I'm not sure I can explain it well enough to make sense! It has a lot to do with the fact that the TM is a soft surface, and you actually help your pace by being on a firm surface. I think Corinna gave you really good advice about the race though. Don't try to overdo it - just stick with what you're comfortable with and enjoy the experience!

After a week off from running, for no reason other than that I was lazy, I did a 10 mile run Saturday on the course for the Tobacco Road Half that I'm running in 3 weeks. Then I took Sienna out for a run with me today - it's only the second time I've taken her running with me, but we did okay. She didn't need to stop and sniff every dog that we passed, and she only stopped once for a potty break! We did 3.3 miles at a 13:00 pace, more because my shins were bothering me than because she couldn't keep up.

Jackie

My goals for March are simple: lose a few more pounds, keep ramping up my training for the late-April 70.3 in Galveston, buckle down on my diet and spend some time remembering a family friend lost to us last March.

:grouphug:

Jackie - You took a week off from running and then did a 10 miler? Wow!:worship: That's impressive!

I'm staying at AS Sports too.
What version is that of The Lonely Goatherd? I think I need it!
I hope you get your lifetime WW status!
Thanks for the advice - I'll stick to my usual intervals, and find a balance on my running speed between holding back my new faster pace and pushing myself a little - it is a race after all.
I'm sure I'll take plenty of moments to enjoy the race - I love taking photos, so that will be part of my fun.

Maria - Very cool about the HP exhibit. I hope we get it in MN!

I can't believe it's only a few days away! :yay:

I'm staying at AS Sports too.
What version is that of The Lonely Goatherd? I think I need it!

It's by Lora Munro and is called "The Lonely Goatherd (Klubkidz Mash-Up Mix by DJ J Saint James) [Fat. the Sound of Music Kids]." I got it from iTunes. Just remember, there is no accouting for taste in running music. I can't explain this one. :confused3

Oh yes, I remember now that you're at Sports as well - that should be really fun!

I took my younger son for his first ice skating lesson tonight. He'd had some lessons a few years back but they were a travesty. Now that he's a little older and stroner, he seems much more capable on skates. He wants to go to "open skate" at the arena now. Me too, for that matter. After the Princess race, though. Any other ice skating fans in the group?

Jackie - You took a week off from running and then did a 10 miler? Wow!:worship: That's impressive!

There are some advantages to sticking with my running group all winter. We run 10 every Saturday, so even if I don't run during the week, I can usually get through 10 without a problem. Last winter I really only did the Saturday runs, with almost nothing mid-week. After I read Richard's post about hitting his mileage goal for February, I went back and looked. Last year I ran 7.34 miles in February; this year 65.11. Still not where it should be, but a whole lot better! :thumbsup2

The fun part is in May when the official Galloway group resumes. The first five runs are 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 miles. Those of us who've run all winter do the group run and then go back out to finish 10. The newbies always look in shock. I know I did - then I set a goal of being one of those who went back out, and finally achieved it last season.

Now I've got to get this new shin pain under control, and fast. I don't want to have to do a 3 mile warmup before my next half... :confused3

Corinna - No ice skating here. Actually never tried it, but after discovering how bad I was at snow skiing (DH's best friend, who was a ski instructor, declared me unteachable), decided it was wiser not to. And DD is awful. Last time she went she fell and ended up with a black eye (don't ask!) and a dislocated shoulder. I've forbidden her to skate again until she's off my insurance. I'm going to look for that version of "Lonely Goatherd." I need something fun!

Richard - Has it really been a year?

Jackie

Sorry that I have been too busy to keep up here...I thought things would calm down...maybe one day!

Best of luck to all heading off to the Princess. That was my first race and I had a lot of fun last year. Sorry I won't be there to meet some of you, I will be with you in spirit. I am considering doing 13.1 here in Cinci, but given my travel schedule I don't think it will be pracitcal.

I have been able to stick to my training schedule pretty well, despite my busyness. I have not been outside since Goofy, but unlike many here, I really love my TM and have been content doing my workouts on that. I have been able to stick with my core/strength routine--approx 50 minutes--3x a week and I not only feel good, but am looking somewhat...defined? I am almost thinking I may have to buy a tank top to show off a bit..and I don't even like to wear tank tops!!

Jackie a running group sounds like a good idea--and good for you to set a goal to be in the group that goes back out...and getting to that goal! Hope your shin is better soon.

Corinna Glad to hear that you have a thaw going on. I know all that shoveling gets tiresome. Glad your son is getting back into skating. I hear that is very popular since the Olympics.

Nicole I agree about finding a comfortable pace and sticking with it. And, don't forget to enjoy the race!!

Richard Sorry to hear that you lost a friend. If it will help you to post about it I would be happy to cyber-listen.

Maria I am glad you got to the HP exhibit before it closed. Does your family plan to go to Universal when HP opens over there?

Corinna - I love ice skating, even had lessons for a while when I was young although I never got to the point where I was jumping or anything like that. I haven't gotten to skate in a good while since there are not any rinks close by.

Julie - Thank you!

Jackie - Yes, it is getting close to a year. (March 21) You did a good job of sticking with the winter running, even if you you were below expectations in February...and as bad as your weather was, no wonder that it was down.

Christine (and anyone else) - First off I say go with the tank top and show off your hard work if you will feel good about it, you did a lot of hard work to improve yourself! Second, Thanks for the offer. Talking about what happened is one of those things that is both good and bad, which probably only makes sense when you are dealing with a completely screwed up situation. To summarize so you'll understand, my oldest DD was the survivor of a collision where her car was struck from behind (while she was stopped) by a large pickup going at a high rate of speed. Her car was destroyed but she was mostly uninjured physically other than some soreness and scratches; her best friend of several years, Allison, never regained consciousness and died the next day. Allison's family lives down the road and are active in our church, so we knew them before all this, but they are more like family than friends for all we have gone through. Her family has gotten through this as well as I could imagine, as has my daughter--for which all of us here are grateful. One of the good things that I learned because of all this, is just how caring the members of this group are.

On a much happier note, a Happy Texas Independence Day to all of Team Ohana!!

Hello to all of my cousins.

Sorry I've been MIA and that this post will be fairly random. This week has been crazy. Butch (my DH) was supposed to fly out last Thurs for a marathon in Tampa. Thanks to snow and multiple flight cancellations he did not leave until Sat. We decided that since we were all planning on coming to FL on Thursday for Princess it would make more sense for him to stay n FL and meet us on Thurs. This would not have been too tough on my if it had been planned ahead, but the last minuteness of it made childcare arrangements a bit tough. Let's just say I'm a little tired. I have been getting in a few miles and am about to head to my TM for 4-5 miles tonight. BTW he ran an awesome race and I am super proud of him.

Can't wait to see everyone at Princess.

I took my younger son for his first ice skating lesson tonight. He'd had some lessons a few years back but they were a travesty. My kids were both skaters for years. They both competed for a while - but as is the way with some sports, if you're not "winning" at a higher level, you "age out". Amazing that at 16 you're too old... Initially - the kids had a coach that wasn't the best - and made it tougher for kids to enjoy what they were doing. At some point, it ceased to be fun for them - and their hearts weren't in it anymore.

Anyway - now they're into tennis!

SO - GOOD MORNING, TEAM! Been gone for a while, just with standard life stuff. Haven't been working out hard, just piddling around. (think I got a but burned out training for Goofy)

Have a great day, and for those going to Princess - ENJOY!!!!

I'm guessing it will be a pretty quiet weekend on the team thread here, with so many of our group heading to Orlando for the Princess Half. :cheer2: I wish all of you going luck as you run and/or cheer, and most of all I hope you have a great time! :cheer2: If my recent weather in the Houston area is any guide you'll have great running weather for your time there.

I wish you all safe journeys and can't wait to hear the stories and see the photos.

Just popping in to WISH all the Princess Runners a fabulous race! I hope you have a wonderful time, and take some pictures at the Team Ohana meet!

Oh! And I do think we will be visiting HP at Universal this summer -- we haven't nailed down our summer plans yet because we need to see where ds is going to school next year and there are going to be layoffs at Dennis's agency -- so we don't want to plan something we might have to cancel. On the bright side, my boss just told me to order new business cards yesterday, so I guess I'm probably safe for now...

Anyway, everyone have a fabulous weekend, especially our travellers!

Maria :upsidedow

That is always a good sign! I feel like I have a more secure job than most with regard to the economy, but I still take note of when my Board of Directors mention me and long-term plans at the same time.
