Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Richard...feel free to send some of that payroll this way :thumbsup2

Mel - So sorry, but what little was left was claimed by the federal government this week. :confused3 I may have a little lint left in my pockets, but that's about it.

I feel loved already! :grouphug:

Jackie-- I hope that funk goes away soon. Be proud of yourself for the long walk/hikes. The running will come back when your mind and body are ready.

I did 10 miles on "my" bike path on Wednesday. It was my first time on the path in 2 years and it felt good. I mostly walked and in the end my average pace was 15:52-- good enough for the sweepers.

Today I did 4.25 miles outside at lunchtime. Oh that felt great! It's finally Spring here in Mass.

I keep having technical difficulties getting onto the boards from work. So, if I go MIA again it's not 'cause I don't love ya's!!!!!

Hi team!

I'm not even going to try to catch up. It's been a few weeks since I've read this thread and there are so many posts.
I'm getting ready for the CMM next week. I don't feel as prepared as I did for the Princess race last month. I hope the hills don't kill me.:scared:
I'm looking forward to meeting up with Jeanne and other WISHers again.

Debra - thanks for tracking me down! You're a great team captain!

Sunny: You're here, you're here, you're really here! :yay: I'm a bit excited, you know? Welcome to the family. I've put you on the roster, the spreadsheet, etc. You'll brighten up the place. Great job on your 10 miler and pace, too. Best of all, you felt good. That's what we like to hear.

Kathy: You're here, you're here, you're really here! :yay: Can you tell I love having you here, too? :goodvibes You're going to rock CMM, you know. And then there's all the Goofy training to take into account. You can come visit me and train on the hills any time.

Jackie: You're here, you're here, you're here! (I think you all get the idea.... :lmao:) I'm sorry to hear you're in a not-so-good place these days. Your DH, too. I'm glad you have your Saturday group to give you a little outlet. Remember that we're here, too. What can we do to help jumpstart you, other than put cables on unmentionable places... :scared1:

JenB: Oh, I hope the spring days helps you get motivated. Or the race deadline. I know you've had a sick DD, and that probably doesn't help. Again, how can we help?

Richard: I think we can keep Sunny, but only if you promise to take good care of her. Then again, you take good care of all the cousins, so the answer is yes! :rotfl2: Do you think CoCo is trying to send us a message? :confused3 Or maybe just you--have you two gone out for some quality time recently? :rotfl:

Mel: I've never had the Bacon Bar, but the Barcelona is my favorite. You're in the home stretch with the teaching! You'll be surprised at how much free time it seems to give you, more than you actually spent teaching/prepping etc. The time drag grows exponentially over the semester, at least for me.... I'm going to look at Higdon's plans, thanks to your post. I've never really checked them out before! :thumbsup2 Monty Python--can't really explain it. It's based on word play, absurd situations, a lot of juvenile humor. Either you're into it, or you're not. I was raised with British TV/humor from a young age, so you can say I was indoctrinated. But it's still a favorite of mine. And British sci-fi shows. Red Dwarf, anyone?

As for me: Having some time management issues to go with my motivational ones. Might as well double up and the issues and try to get it all out of the way, right? Hopefully it'll be cleared up by next week, as soon as this project is out of the way. In the meantime, I still haven't finished The Shadow of the Wind--although I'm really enjoying it--or caught up on my Lost & other TV shows. Grrrr. Tomorrow, though, I'm prioritizing my run. First thing in the morning!

Sunny - It must be nice to have "your" own bike path.

Debra - Red Dwarf -- I love you!! (in whatever acceptable definition Team Ohana--and my own DW--allow) Seriously, we love Red Dwarf, Doctor Who and Torchwood -- all British Sci Fi.....and regarding CoCo, sometimes the attitude runs downleash and sometimes it runs upleash.

Richard-- Torchwood. Best. Show. Ever. Have you seen Primeval? I didn't want to like it, but I couldn't help myself! ;)

I've seen Spamalot twice -- and we don't see anything twice. Go, go, go, if ever you have the chance! :dance3: I actually don't really enjoy the movies or tv show. You don't have to like them to love the musical.

Debra -- Hello, you're my Cousin! Of course you can stay in the in-law! And now you have one more reason to come, I'm pretty sure we can lure Sunny in from Burlington -- or maybe we'll go to her and eat at the Rainforest Cafe! :bounce:

Mel -- I read your post and went right to my library online and requested The Summoner. If you recommend it, it's gotta be good! :goodvibes

JenB and Jackie -- I know what you mean. I made myself do 6 mi yesterday. And I do mean made. Then I got off the TM and weighed more than last Friday. Mother Nature is doing a number on me. I just have to remember that and next week will be better. :thumbsup2

Jen -- I hope your little one is feeling better!

Debra -- The Harpoon 5 Miler fills so quickly because it is sponsored by Harpoon Brewery. When you finish, you receive two tickets for free beer, and they also have sausages, hot dogs, etc. Oops! I think that was the other thread. Anyoo...

Gotta take Worf to the vet for his check-up. He goes every 3 months now. The vet says it's not a matter of if his kidneys fail, but when. He has been holding his own. He's a 16 yr. old cat, so realistically we know he's not going to live forever, but he was my first child. Well, until I had a child I thought he was :flower3:

I'm scheduled for 40 minutes on the bike, so hopefully that will happen later.

Everyone have an awesome day!
Maria :upsidedow

Mel - I generally don't get British humor either, but I have to admit I can't help laughing at Monty Python, particularly "Holy Grail." DH thinks "Life of Brian" is much, much better. Will add The Summoner to my "to read" list, once I finish this darn Outlander series. And the Lisa Scottoline book that's on the counter, and Emma, and Jude the Obscure... Totally with you on surviving April, although I wish we were busy at work. We have the opposite problem - no business at all - I'm actually reading at work to kill time!

Maria - Hope the vet visit goes well. We had our first dog for 3 years before DD was born. And when we lost Mystic (dog #2) before Christmas, DD swore I wouldn't be nearly as sad if something had happened to her! The puppies now, maybe not so much... ;)

All Lost fans - when it's all over, will someone just send me a one-paragraph summary and explain it all? We watched the first 2 seasons and gave up, deciding it was too confusing to follow. Now I'm seeing previews and intrigued again, but I REFUSE to devote that much time to catching up!

So life may be tough during the week, but when it's 77 and sunny outside, and you meet up with 4 or 5 or 6 (people came and went during the run, okay?) of your running buddies on Saturday morning, life can't be all bad. :thumbsup2 We changed our route today, and ended up doing 11 miles of ALL HILLS! :scared1: Still, it was a great run, although since I haven't run AT ALL in two weeks, I imagine I'll be feeling it tomorrow. I'm hoping the pain is just enough to remind me that I have to get out there Monday or Tuesday and run, if for no other reason than to break in the new shoes I bought 2 weeks ago!

Jackie

Sunny: :welcome: Glad to have you as our newest cousin!

Jackie: don't be in a funk.....you know I'm closeby if you need me. It doesn't even have to be for a training session. We can always meet at Starbucks.....or DD, if you prefer. (I actually like their coffee better! :thumbsup2)

Kathy, Mel, Jen: glad to see you posting again.

Maria: I LOVE Boston.....is there room for me also in the in-law suite? ;)

Well, team, I don't usually post on weekends, but I had to turn on the computer for something else and decided to let you know that my 10-miler today was a success. I was slow from lack of training, but managed to maintain a slightly sub-15 minute pace the first 8 miles. Then the last 2 miles had some killer hills so I slowed down and pretended I was just being nice and waiting for John to catch up! The best thing was that the pain patch seems to be working. The only discomfort I had was from my Ace bandage which was too tight, but not from my foot itself. :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: That is definitely something to cheer about.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Good Morning, Team Ohana!

I am really feeling the Ohana spirit today. Yesterday ds and I did a Stitch marathon and watched all 4 movies. :stitch:

Jeanne -- Of course there's room for you! :goodvibes When we have multiple guests we just use more rooms. DS's play room has a couch, and my attic is also finished and has a futon. If you're feeling really adventurous you can always camp out in the back yard. I tend to stay out of there after true dark due to what ds used to call the "black and white kitties", but I know you're a braver soul than I! :lmao:

Jackie -- Worf is still stable, so that's what we're going for. He goes back in August for the full battery of tests. Our vet only does that every so often, so it doesn't cost us a mint but we have a good handle on his health. We take better care of this cat than ourselves. I don't know what that means :confused3

Julie -- Enjoy some zebra domes for the rest of us! And say a fond goodbye to Spoodles. I won't make it back there before it turns into Cat Cora's restaurant. If you make a diversion to Goofy's Candy Company, be sure to take photos. We need something to get us through this facsimile of Spring! :rotfl: Are you going to try the Kim Possible missions in Epcot? I think that looks like fun.

JenB -- How is your little one? I hope she improves each day. :cutie:

Debra -- I promise to watch "Lost" sometime before tomorrow so I can catch up. I am so far behind on my tivo, I haven't even watched last week's "Heroes" yet.

I did do my 40 min on the bike, and I'm scheduled for 6 mi today. I have to wait until Dennis rises from his beauty sleep. :lmao: I think he'd be nocturnal if he could.

It's our April Vacation week for ds, so I've scheduled higher mileage for myself since I'll be home more. That means I'm also slowing down, so I don't burn out by Wednesday like I usually do. I did get in every workout I'd planned last week (6 days), so I think that's a record for me. :woohoo:

Aloha from Boston!
Maria :upsidedow

Maria: Thanks for asking about DD-- she is fine now, on the last day of "pink stuff" as she calls it and ready to head back to school on Monday. Did you happen to watch this week's CSI-- it had a really funny Start Trek convention spoof and it made me think of you (and my fellow Ohana teammates with Start Trek leanings).

This week has been really tough. I have overeaten and not gotten in my miles-- a bad combo. With DD being sick then being off all week for Spring break we have been really busy and by the time she is asleep I have no energy left to run. I'm going to try to get a few miles in today then get back on track for real tomorrow. We did get our plane tickets for DL in Sept (I love Southwestair-- $129 from PA to CA, can't beat it :) ) so I'm looking forward to that.

Maria - Torchwood is definitely great. We haven't watched Primeval, we are somewhat afraid of getting sucked into a new show at this time. Unfortunately we missed the Spamalot show last year when it came to Houston. :sad2:

Richard: If all it takes to get a little love around here is mention Red Dwarf, let me just say, Love is what makes us different from animals. That and the fact we don't use our tongues to clean our own genitals. (Those are quotes from the show, for those of you who aren't familiar.)

Maria: Haven't seen Primeval yet. Apparently it's worthwhile. And we'll have to discuss Lost, soon. I think Aloha Jeff's got a thread somewhere so we don't spoil it for anyone.... Are there treats involved after Worf's vet visit? Vet appts. are such a traumatic experience here and I feel so guilty afterwards.... :guilty: Good planning ahead for a successful high-mileage week. I'm positive you'll rock your schedule.

And ooooh, I'm sensing an 'Ohana meet at Maria's! :cheer2:

Jackie: Why DH's preference for Holy Grail? (For me, it probably depends on the day.) Lost has gotten more streamlined this season and taken to explaining things (maybe overexplaining them); I can totally see why you'd give it up. Me, I stopped trying to figure it out and so figure they dumbed it down for people like me. :lmao: I'm seriously impressed that you can not run for two weeks and then put in 11 miles. I'd be dead. :faint:

Jeanne: I'm so glad your pain patch is working and your first 8 miles went so well! Definitely worth cheering about. And that Ace bandage thing can be easily solved, too. Whew! Are you looking more forward to CMM now?

JenB: You got a fantastic price to CA for the DL 1/2. :woohoo: Now I'm thinking I should check airfare... Spring break weeks can be really difficult to keep up with everything, I think. I'm not someone who likes to have her routine disrupted. I hope this week is better for you. Oh, and I'm sorry to miss this week's CSI--I love spoofs. Have you seen the previews for the movie yet?

As for me: Struggling with the munchies a bit these last few days. DOOD keeps blathering on about my metabolism being kicked up, or how hard I'm working. Blah, blah, blah. He hasn't seen the lack of workouts/lack of intensity recently because we're on different schedule. I appreciate the support, but I really prefer the drill sergeant routine. Anyone want to step up for me?

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

And now for a bit of silliness, just because... :teeth:

This week's mixer theme is "Superpowers That Would Be More Trouble Than They're Worth," and your question:

What would be the superpower you would end up being granted?

Some examples:
  • The ability to tell the future, but only one minute ahead of time.
  • Super-strength, but only in your thumbs.
  • The ability to read the minds of people whose language you don't understand.
  • The ability to see through one layer of clothes.
  • Super breath, strong enough to knock down your opponents. Unfortunately, it's because you're smells like garlic and you always have that power.

Of course, your superpower is unique to you. So feel free to tell us what you would do with your power or why you got so lucky as to be given it. :rolleyes1 Bonus points--again, they're worth nothing--for telling us what superpowers you think other WISHers might get. (Keep it DIS-friendly, though, folks!)

I can of course activate Panda speed. Unfortunately Pandas are not very fast as wild predator beasts go.

Super Panda:cool1:

Yay, I've made it to the Monday mixer!!!!!! OK, this one is REAL easy......if I could have any one superpower, it would be the ability to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and always remain the weight I was in my 20's (about 125) Ohhh, life would be soooooo good!

On a more serious note - because you know how complex I am - I originally misread the question and was about to use my superpower to grant abilities to other people. And namely, that would be the ability to give everyone the power of continually seeing all sides to a situation. Think how much more pleasant our world would be if all people would put themselves in someone else's shoes and not merely see things from their own perspective. Wow, we might even achieve world peace! Ok, I'm done being serious......can we all drink to that now?

Maria: loved your story about sleeping in....it's OK, girl, God still loves you. Reminds me of when my own kids were growing up........(oh no, another story coming) Getting them ready for church on time was always a struggle. As if the 4 kids weren't bad enough, I got absolutely no support from the 5th BIG kid! There was one Sunday we arrived in the parking lot so late, I was too embarrassed to have all 6 of us walk in. I told the kids it was disrespectful to visit God so late, so we could just make the sign of the cross an go to "express Mass". It turned out to be a really bad idea because from that point on they purposedly tried to be late so we would have to resort to "express Mass"! In fact, when one of my daughters was in 3rd grade she wrote an essay about it. She specifically mentioned that her dad goes into the shower and never comes out, her older brother says he wants to be Jewish so he doesn't have to go to Mass and her mom starts screaming at everyone (how flattering). She then went on and wrote about how they try to get "express Mass". The teacher returned her paper with some comment about her "interesting family", but needless to say, I was mortified! Don't you just love teachers that give totally in-class writing assignments? :scared1:
JenB: glad to hear your daughter is on the mend. Sounds like you got a great rate to CA for the DL half. For us, the rates on SWA were not as good as we were hoping for, but we have some reward tickets that we just may use. We can actually fly a little cheaper with Delta but their track record for changing their schedule is so bad, I'd rather go with SWA.....especially since we have a connecting flight with both airlines. Just curious, are you flying into Santa Ana or LAX? Any decisions on the hotel yet? We're doing Paradise Pier with the Buy3/Get2 Free deal.

Looks like those pain patches will pretty much solve the problem. The key is to use one at least half a day before I actually need it and then another one for the event. I guess I have no more excuses for not training anymore......:rolleyes1 Speaking of training, I must really be out of shape.......those 10 miles had me wiped out both Saturday and Sunday! Either that, or the fact that I have made a conscious decision to reduce my red meat consumption. Perhaps my body is experiencing a steep decline its iron stores?

Have a happy Monday!

I want Jeanne's superpower.. eating whatever I want would be awesome, but I wouldn't call that a useless power.

A nice but useless power would be having the ability to know how many calories are in a particular food but no increase in my will power to avoid eating the bad for you stuff. popcorn::

Jeanne: I'm glad your foot is on the mend (or at least that the pain stuff enables you to keep active) We have yet to decide on hotel rooms because we are waiting to see if the Dis Unplugged podcast gets a room block or not. We are leaning toward the DL Hotel because of the cool 5 for 3 deal.

Jeeane - Great story about the "Express Mass"! I'm sure glad I never tried that one or my girls would have never let me forget it!!

Debra - You started with some pretty interesting "super" powers. Although given many people, the ability to only see through 1 layer of clothing might be a benefit compared to seeing through all clothing. Can this be learned? Maybe by going to a nude beach and practicing looking at everyone before trying it on the regular beach?

For me, how about the ability to do any complex math problem instantly, but still be unable to balance a checkbook--or my second power, the ability to instantly travel halfway to my destination in one leap (maybe you'll have to think that one over a bit before you figure out that if every leap only gets me halfway there, then I'll never actually get to the destination).

Let me throw out my daughters' favorite, Captain Obvious, the title is bestowed upon someone who says something so obvious and unremarkable that it really has no value whatsoever. [I've always figured that the name came from somewhere in pop culture, but I never figured it out--then again my daughters think I am too old to know anything useful anyway!!]

If I think of something better [or someting really bad], I'll be back later to try again.

The whole superhero thing reminds me of "Who's Line is it Anyway?" I really liked that show-- just pure silliness.

Apparently this prompt killed the mixer.... :lmao: Really, I thought it would be fun and funny. Sorry about that. I'll get back to training/healthy living prompts.

But JenB is right, this is something straight out of Whose Line...DOOD and I play these games on car trips, etc. Our favorite is the question game, where you try to have an ongoing conversation consisting of nothing but questions!

Dave: But pandas are powerful at any speed. :thumbsup2

Jeanne: Your power would be awesome! And I'm so glad that patch seems to be working to alleviate the pain.

JenB: I think we share that superpower. As in super-annoying power.

Richard: I love the math/checkbook power. I don't have any mathematic ability whatsoever. And DOOD and I use the phrase Captain Obvious all the time! I think we got it from Wiley's Non-Sequitur (comic strip) and his Obviousman.

I have a handful of superpowers:

  • I think I can communicate with my cats, but they aren't speaking to me.
  • I levitate when I sneeze, but only for the duration of the sneeze.
  • I can start fires but only if I'm in the kitchen trying to cook. I don't have control over this power yet.
  • I can generate electricity and level it at someone else, so long as I'm willing to experience static shock. :rolleyes1
