Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

I think I'd like to be the proverbial fly on the wall so I could listen in on what everyone was saying. Of course, I guess the downside is that you can't unhear things you don't like and with my luck, I'd get splattered with a fly swatter :)

JenB: I think we share that superpower. As in super-annoying power.

I know a few people with this power.

Another downside would be having to vomit on your food to eat it.

Hmm... probably should have put more thought into this one... Maybe my superpower should be forethought:cutie:

The closest thing I really have to a superpower is the hindsight to figure out that I did something foolish after the fact.

The best super power I came up with (and there were several non-starters), was the ability to travel anywhere instantly, but to always reach a different destination than my goal -- I want to go to Orlando, I end up in Oshkosh.

I also thought about being able to know what really happened in history's mysteries -- who assassinated JFK, who is King Arthur modeled after, etc., but not being able to tell anyone else. I think that would make me crazy.

Jeanne -- I  the "express Mass" story! I don't dare share it, or Dennis and ds will think they've found a new way to get out of church! :lmao:

Richard -- Hindsight is better than never realizing you did something foolish. I have a few colleagues with that trait :rolleyes1

Vicky -- Instead of a fly you can be invisible. That power has all kinds of fun aspects! :cutie:

Debra -- I think fun prompts are great. It's just hard for people to think creatively, especially about a super power. I was trying to come up with something I hadn't already seen in the Justice League, etc., which can get hard when you have a ds who has gone through the superhero phase, not to mention I couldn't pick any of Ben10's powers... :confused3 Oddly enough, Worf isn't actually fond of treats. He'd much rather have someone let him lay on them perpetually. When I speak of family movie time, it is indeed time for the entire family. I think Worf enjoys it as much or more than the rest of us.

Think kind thoughts for me today. Dennis has jury duty, so I'm at home with ds on day 2 of his vacation. While that would not normally inspire a need for positive thinking, I'm taking him to see the Hannah Montana movie. It's the tween boy curse. They could care less about the Jonas Brothers, but they are very interested in Miley & co. You can guess why. Tween hormones are a scary thing :scared1:

We're also working on his latest book report. I mention it because he read the 2nd book in the Kingdom Keepers series. For those of you this might interest, these are books set in WDW, and the heroes have to foil Maleficent and her minions as they try to take over the World. The teenage heroes follow clues through rides and attractions to find the items they need to prevail. There is an incredible amount of detail in the books, the writer credits an imagineer with helping him with his research. They also go backstage and visit resorts, so it's a fun way to keep the Disney love alive (or get your little reader to actually read). They're aimed at tweens, the author is Ridley Pearson.

I didn't do my workout when I got up today, so we'll see. I did 4 mi yesterday, and still gained on the scale. I wish I could just put it away. I think I'm going to try weighing once a week for awhile. I get so discouraged because I fluctuate like the Dow Jones.

Anyway, yes, we should do an Ohana meet here! Did I mention I'm about 5 minutes from the beach? Ok, the water is pretty chilly, but it's an ocean! :yay: We can watch the cruise ships come in from Bermuda and Canada. Wait, that might just make us sad. :sad1: Maybe Julie has something more cheery out her way. I still want to go to Sunny's Rainforest Cafe. I've never made it out to her mall...

Just one Lost thought about this week's episode -- I really liked the Easter Egg (is it an Easter Egg if they just flat out say it?) for Star Wars fans! How can you not smile at Hurley and the Best Movie Ever? :woohoo:

Ok, I have to get moving if we're going to be in our seats when the 8,000 previews start. The fact this movie has a soundtrack is a little scary for me, especially since we already own it. :rotfl:

Maria :upsidedow

Maria - DD turned me on to the Kingdom Keepers series. Read the second book just a few months ago. You're right - the detail is amazing - I feel like I'm in the parks with them and know exactly where they are.

Will join you in putting the scale away. Hadn't weighed since January until a couple of weeks ago when I figured why not. Wasn't too depressed with the number, so this morning decided to see if I'd made any progress. After all, there was that amazing 11 miles of hills on Saturday... oh no, I'd GAINED 5 pounds.

Got on the TM last night while dinner was cooking to run an easy 3 miles. Stopped after 1 to stretch my shins because the shin splints had literally brought tears to my eyes. Managed to do 2.2 miles in 35 minutes - most of it walking - but I at least did something, so I can say I'm not just doing long runs on the weekend!

Must. Watch. Something. Made for adults. I am taumatized. Not only did I find it painful -- I mean you could drive a semi through the holes in the Hannah Montana movie plot -- this woman had a crying baby and refused to leave. I kept ds in his seat and trying to watch the movie, but they ended up calling the manager because another person asked her to leave and she refused to because she didn't want to make her older child miss the movie. She actually said (very loudly), "Now you made me mad and I'm going to stand right in the aisle so you can all hear her cry. What is the matter with you people? You are disgusting. She is a baby, and we paid to see this movie."

Ok, I am a mom, I've had a crying baby -- and for us that meant we (or one of us) left. There's no way I would subject other people to that. They paid to see the movie, too. And it was a skewed young audience, but old enough to be annoyed and distracted by a baby who cried the entire movie!

I know the mom was getting upset because I heard more than one 5-6 year old say, "Mommy, why doesn't she take that baby out?". For me, that's a clue you need to go, not brazen it out. Also, she was with an adult friend and her kids, so why on earth wouldn't you leave the older child with your friend and take the baby to the lobby? That's the part I don't get. I only have one, so I've never been in that situation. I was sympathetic at first, but when she stood in the aisle and made her announcement, my sympathy left. Ok, rant over.

It's also pouring out, so I think people are grouchy. I'm going to read something good while ds works on that book report. Right now I'm loving P.C. Cast's Goddess series, a little fantasy and alot of fun.

Maria: OMG...HOW RUDE!!!!!! I probably would not have been able to keep my own mouth shut......or at least thrown popcorn at her! Even worse, since she had a friend with her who could have stayed with her kids. Some people think it's all about them. On the other hand, if I were the theatre manager, I would have politely offered her a free pass to return at a more "convenient" time and perhaps shame her into leaving.

Jackie: good job on the workouts! Exercising while making dinner......you are a multi-task maven! I actually RAN over a mile today! I was inspired by this month's issue of RW to add some running to my training. In truth, I ran .50 mile, walked the next .50, and then ran .55! My 2-mile time was 28.05, which is kinda funny because when I get my game on, I can actually go faster just walking! Go figure......

Maria, FWIW, I loved your superpowers and think you're all very clever. As I said earlier, this is the kind of game DOOD and I like to play. I'll just chalk it up to something that works better in person than face to face. Nothing I take personally. (I've got better things to take personally.... :rotfl2:)

Maria: I hope DH's jury duty went better than the Hannah Montana movie. That woman was just beyond the pale. That would make me so confrontationally angry!

I've tried to do a once-a-week weigh-in, but once-a-week turns into once every two weeks, etc. So I learn to live with the daily fluctuation (Dow Jones--hah!). It helps that I don't have TOM to deal with for that. And I think someone on the lean meaners--was is Mike--who suggested that we do bank our WOs, but at a much longer period of time than we think? Can't remember. So don't be discouraged, you're doing great!

I love that Worf's treat is family time. I tried to encourage mine to settle in with me for things like Lost, but nooooo. They only get interested when I can't sit still for very long. They hate me, I know it. I'm really looking forward to Lost for things like Hurley's presence. This season is clipping along!

Oh, you and/or Sunny must tell me. What is this Rainforest Cafe of which you speak. I mean, I know what Rainforest Cafe is. But Sunny's?

Jackie: BIG congratulations for getting in mid-week WOs. Sorry to hear about the shin splints and that they're so painful. I've been lucky since February in that regard, but I've been there.

Jeanne: That's so funny. I just read that article in RW and wondered if it would inspire anyone! And here you pop up, referencing it. And you are such a speedy walker. :worship: I'm glad to see you're able to walk and RW these days, and hope your game is on and pain-free this weekend!

Book Lovers: I'll be looking into the Kingdom Keepers series, just for giggles, and liked your promo for the Goddess series. I've got a lot of suggestions now, between what you provide, and Mel, and... And DOOD recommends White Tiger, so that's next for me. And The Time Traveler's Wife is in there somewhere, as it's on that BBC list and the movie adaptation is coming out this summer. I hear Gabaldon's new Outlander book comes out this fall, in September? And I don't recall we have any Laurell Hamilton lovers here, but did you know her Anita Blake vampire series is also a comic book series?

As for me: DOOD's b-day is Thursday, so I'm making Key Lime pie today. He can eat it over several days. The birthday presents have to wait, though, until the proper day. The semester is almost over, crunch time is on, and that means comfort food. After this week, though, we can sit back and plan some racing/traveling. And my summer blockbuster movie-watching. Star Trek, Public Enemies, Up, Wolverine, Inglourious Basterds, Harry Potter, Terminator: Salvation.....

I tried a short run--and by short I mean I made it a mile--before walking home. My knee was screaming. It feels fine now. :confused3 I'm not sure if I should re-attempt tomorrow or wait until Thursday. Any thoughts?

Sorry to have missed the superpowers party. I'm already an empath which helps me connect with people at work, but got me out of oncology because I feel too deeply. I would totally take Wolverine's super claw thing (and wouldn't mind a bit of High Jackman ;) but imagine those knives could get in the way at times.

I've read Laurell Hamilton, both Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry series. A little more erotica than storyline for my taste, but the characters are interesting. DD16 has read Kingdom Keepers, but didn't know there was a 2nd book. Apparently, Small World now creeps her out ;)

Jeanne...you are speedy, dude! I know you blew by me during the full!

Maria...what's the PC Cast Goddess series? Sounds cool!

Too bad we can't all meet up to see the new Star Trek prequel together. I want to see the Disney Earth movie too.

I read a book over the weekend on weight loss called the Anderson Method. The author is a therapist who lost 100+ lbs and now practices here in Sarasota. He does weight management using behavioral therapy techniques...our patients have had some amazing results. I really connected with a LOT of the things he said in the book. I'm going to try some of the techniques myself (now that I know his secrets ;)).

Mel: If you see the Disney Earth movie please let me know how it is. I want to go and DD5 loves nature stuff but I'm worried it may be a bit too much, not sure I want her to see footage of carnivores in action if you know what I mean-- she is easily freaked out.

Debra: I'd say if your knee was screaming at you today I'd take it for a nice walk tomorrow and run the next day if your knee behaves on the walk.. just my 2 cents.

We are off to FL on May 8th (and I can't wait :yay:), with a trip to visit my father-in-law in Sarasota then head to WDW on the 10th. I'm trying to use the trip as a motivator for my diet-- kind of the get in shape before you blow it on vacation thing-- here's hoping it works.... I figure if I am seeing some real results I'll behave more on vacation (you know, only one or two No Way Jose's)

I still want to go to Sunny's Rainforest Cafe. I've never made it out to her mall...

Maria :upsidedow

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I do claim ownership of "my" bike path. It's a little trail that runs 11 miles from Bedford to Cambridge. I'm a generous sort and share it with others. ;)

However, I don't claim the Burlington Mall! I actually never go there. Except two weeks ago when I was there with DS at the Rainforest Cafe! Kristi likes that Rainforest, too. Maybe we could have a Northeast meet there!

My super powers.... hmmmm.... I think I have the power to make anything complicated and confusing. Unfortunately, I'm primarily the one who gets confused so it doesn't work real well on enemies.

Has anyone read "The Shack" by William Young? It is very, very popular right now, but I would have to rate it as one of the stupidest books ever! I had to read it for my book club meeting tonight and boy, I can't wait to let everyone know how much I hated it. I have no problem with a liberal interpretation of God, but the way the author conveys it is just plain dumb. I got a feeling he is laughing his way to the bank right now since we are all suckers for buying it. That's it....I'm just p.o.'d about wasting my precious time reading such junk.

Maria - We have all read the Kingdom Keepers at our house. We never will feel the same riding the Winnie the Pooh ride, It's a Small World and many others.

Mel- I'd love to hear about the Anderson Method. Any tips or techniques that you can share with us?

Richard - I was reading the last book of the Twilight Series last evening when I came across the phrase "Captain Obvious". I mentioned it to my DD12 and she said..."everyone says that mom". :rolleyes:The first I heard of it was in your post and then read it for a second time in the same day in my book. I learned something new yesterday!:teacher:

Well I'm off to Nashville in the morning. Not really looking forward to the ten hour car ride. :sad2:Mike is not much of a talker in the car. I'll have to try to get him to play the question game that Debra mentioned. If he looks at me like I'm crazy, I'll blame it on Debra. ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing Jeanne and all the other WISHers on Friday. I hope everyone has a great weekend. I'll check back in on Monday.

It's nice to know that I know more than someone else out there. It seems I am often oblivious to the obvious....maybe I can be Captain Oblivious, who does nothing because he nevers sees anything happen......

Mel-It's too bad that it would be too difficult to do, but it would be cool to get the whole group together for the Star Trek movie!

Maria - Sometimes hindsight is all I've got going for me, but I know a few who never get it about their own foolishness, I hope your IQ has gone back up after the Hannah movie

I am cracking up about Captian Obvious (and Captain Oblivious, too) - not sure the origin of it, but the only time I've heard of Captain Obvious was when I took my older son to sleep-over cub scout camp a couple of years ago. The theme that weekend was Superheroes and they did a bunch of different sketches, and every now and then, this one guy (the handsome lifeguard, FYI) would enter the scene and point out the obvious and they'd all shout "Thank you, Captain Obvious!" I guess it would have been even funnier if I had know then expression from out in the world.

Jeanne, I have not read that book, but I have heard others talking about it. I appreciate your honest opinion and kind of hope my bookclub doesn't choose it, though you know how that goes.

This is the weekend for my 10K trip. I am excited and a little nervous since I will be there with a friend who does not actually know what her pace is. We will have to see how we match up, I guess. Last Sunday, I got my last "long run" in before the race and for the first time in almost 6 months, ran my favorite outdoor loop. I can't believe it has been that long that I've mostly stuck to the TM, but it really has. It is nice to be out again. :thumbsup2

This weekend we have several cousins competing in races! Let's wish them luck, clear skies, and smooth pavement! :goodvibes

4/25, Country Music 1/2 and Marathon, Nashville: Jeanne, Kathy
4/25, CPCC Skyline 5K Run, Charlotte: Christa
4/26, Groton Road Race 10K, Groton, MA: Corinna

Mel: I didn't know you used to work in oncology. I could never do that, and I don't consider myself empathetic at all, not like you are. Oddly enough, I can also see you as Wolverine-ish, who also happens to be the subject of a summer blockbuster I'm seeing on its opening weekend. Oh, and I think we should ALL see the Star Trek film when it comes out, even if we can't be together. Lord knows I'll be talking about it.

Talk to me a bit more about the Anderson Method. Just an interesting tidbit to whet my interest. I have to admit that I've been slacking on the reading lately, finishing things much more slowly than normal. Mind is elsewhere I guess. (All right, which one of you have stolen my mind. Fess up!)

JenB: Thank you for the sage advice. Why I feel the pressure to run when obviously it's not a good idea.... :confused3 You are my voice of reason, so I don't know what I'll do when you go to FL. But I'm super-excited that you're going. :woohoo: What fun! Half the time I think I make it through the challenges of my daily life because of travel plans on the horizon, and so this stage of the upcoming trip would be exciting for me--so close. I hope you feel that way.

Sunny: We share superpowers! I think I spread the confusion around pretty equally though. :rotfl2: I had no idea so many of you were together out that way. A Northeast meet, huh? :scratchin

Jeanne: I'd totally missed out on The Shack's popularity. Thanks for the heads-up. I know you like a lot of different books/genres, and so your harsh critique of this one is definitely enough to make me steer clear of it.

Kathy: Dang, I missed wishing you luck this weekend. You'll have a great time, and we want to hear all about it! If Mike likes the game, I'll take credit for it. If he hates it, blame Drew Carey. I'm pretty sure you should start dropping Carey's name now. :lmao:

Richard: No ST spoilers here, but I went to the movies yesterday and they ALREADY have the cardboard signage put up, although out of the way. They're definitely planning for the midnight-moviegoing madness.

Maria: Admit it, you're learning the dance steps to Hannah Montana's hoe-down!

Corinna: You're going to rock (and roll) this weekend! :thumbsup2 I think it can be really hard to run with someone in general, let alone when the other person doesn't know her pace. But I just know you'll find the joy in it, if for no other reason than you'll be outside, running, and conquering another race. Side question: does it take you a long time to adjust from being on a TM to outdoor running in terms of being able to feel "back up to speed" with being on the pavement?

As for me: Today is DOOD's b-day, although he's working late tonight. We're supposed to be going out with friends this weekend, so tonight will be low-key.

Corrina: You're going to rock (and roll) this weekend!

Debra - first of all,

:bday: to DOOD;

:bday: to DOOD;

:bday: Dear One Of Debra!

:bday: to DOOD;

...And many MORE!

Now that we've got that taken care of...I can tell you exactly how long it takes to adjust from TM to outdoor running. Zero minutes! I don't know if it's the mental piece or if my TM is a meany jerk-brain when it comes to representing the pace, but I am always happier and faster outside. Within reasonable weather requirements, anyhow.

My friend has assured me that she will be slower than I am, and I don't mind slowing a bit, but speeding up could spell trouble, if she's wrong. Oh, and the weather is supposed to be in the 80's - would be perfect if it were a morning race - it's not. 1pm, it turns out! I will be carrying my own water, for sure. And I might just wear that WISH singlet, scary though that may be.

Best Race Wishes to Jeanne, Cathy, Charlotte and Christa!!

Not much time for a long post.......I haven't started packing yet!

I know this is a very literary group, so I wanted to give you a heads up regarding the book club concensus on "The Shack." We were a group of about 10 and only 2 people really liked it. I found it surprising because the 2 women that gave it a positive rating are intelligent, critical thinkers. All those who have difficulty thinking out of the box hated it. All those who somewhat strictly adhere to an organized religion hated it. I don't think I fit into either category but I found it was just plain dumb! We ending up having a great discussion about loss and grief so the evening wasn't a total waste.....and the wine was nice. :thumbsup2

That's it for me......I have SOOOOOO much to do!

Be back Monday with some double miles!
