Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Julie - The playlist on my MP3 player would scare most people away. I have everything from the Beatles (Can't Buy Me Love) to Aerosmith (Walk This Way) to Spice Girls (yes, really!) to Glenn Miller (In the Mood) to Paper Lace (The Night Chicago Died). Eclectic, yes. Mainstream, no!

Jeanne, et al. - I have to admit, I've never actually stayed awake for an entire viewing of RHPS. I've been countless times, and even rented it, but fall asleep about 30 minutes before the end every time! But I definitely agree, Tim Curry is HOT, and it is definitely one of his best roles. And I'll never pass up a chance to do the Time Warp. By the way, if you want to see how raunchy it's gotten, check out the Rialto Theatre's website. I just ventured over there to confirm that they're still showing... WHOA! Harry Chapin & Tim Curry - see my playlist above... no questions there!

Debra - If I do the marathon again, I'll get the shirt! Of course, to do another marathon, I'd actually have to run, correct? Or maybe I could do it Bill-style, with no training? Oh yeah, that's not recommended, is it?

Maria - A girl after my own heart. David Cassidy on your ipod. The only reason he's not on mine is that I don't actually download any of my own music. I either use what I already have or get DD to download it for me, and I have a feeling I'll get the old eye roll if I ask for it! (My deep dark secret... I actually went to see Shaun Cassidy in concert when I was 16! :ssst: )

Connie - The 3 bite rule is brilliant! Now if I could only apply it to milkshakes from Cookout. They are my true weakness. I tried to give them up for Lent last year, but caved right at the end.

Mel - I can eat 3 zebra domes in 1 bite if I need to. So much for Connie's rule...:rolleyes1

Nancy - I also finished Plum Spooky last night. This was my first between the numbers, so I had no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I'd shied away from them previously from fear of disappointment. Now I may have to go back and read the rest!

Corinna - Our company started a wellness program last year, and we get points for various activities like getting a physical, meeting certain BP and cholesterol levels, hours of activity/week, running in organized events, doing a half or full marathon, etc. The cash payout at year end depends on the total points. It's not a lot, but it varies from $125-200. Last year I missed the top category by just a few points, so I'm aiming for the big dollars this year. Starting off with a full marathon helps a lot!

I can at least claim some activity today - we took the dogs for a walk to the dog park. I think I've measured it before at around a quarter mile one way, so I'm claiming a half mile and about 20 minutes of walking. Not a lot, but at least I got out and enjoyed our gorgeous weather while it's still around. Hopefully Saturday when I head out for 10 miles my legs will remember how it works...

Jackie

Corinna: I thought I was the only one with Hamster Dance on my ipod-- I love it for no good reason at all other than it is happy, bouncy and makes my 5 year old laugh a lot as she bops around

Hey Cousins... just doing a drive-by to see what's up....

Debra: speakin gof Just one more Mile: I got the shirt that says on the fron and back, "Does this shirt make my butt look fast?" I love it and laugh every time I put it on.

Keep up all the great work!!

Wondering Warrior Tracy

Wow, so many posts by Ohana, and so little time...
Seriously, I am way behind on the news, but I thought that I finally needed to drop in my post, so here goes...

Real-Life Name: Dennis (but Denny is fine too.)
Location: Fort Mill, SC
Family/Household: Me(47), M'Lisse (or MisssyHa)(47), DS Stephen (or UTGuitarist27)(23), and DD Deniele (also goes by Denni)(21 next week.)
Day Job: Alloy Steel Technical Sales

Describe your running/walking/biking/swimming/XT background: In high school, I played basketball and tennis, and running is what we were forced to do to get ready for the season. Running was a means to an end. How times have changed.
What accomplishments are you most proud of in 2008? I did my first Goofy in 2008, and I ran the Marine Corp Marathon.
What are your WISH goals for 2009? I've decided that I enjoy half marathons. Full marathons... not so much! As a result, I'm sticking with half marathons from this point out. I never had knee issues until I started training for a full marathon.
Planned events for 2009/2010? (Event, place, date, distance)

ESPN, the weekend 5K, end of February.
Thinking about the Disneyland 1/2M in Sept.
And, of course, the WDW 1/2 M in January.

What do you do for fun (besides DIS)? I took up golf when I moved to SC. I also like to hunt, and work with my dog (training, walking, running, watching TV, etc.)
Favorite DIS-friendly curse word. friggin'
In the soundtrack of your life, your theme song would be…. I got nothing. No, that's not the name of a song, I really don't have a good answer.

WOW! A busy, busy day yesterday with the posts! It's great to see so many cousins posting about the WOs and their lives! :yay:

I want to point out we have at least two cousins in events this weekend. Christa has the Myrtle Beach Maraton on Saturday, and Mel's doing the Sarasota half on Sunday. I believe Richard also has the Austin half on Sunday, so hopefully he'll be checking in with a RR soon. Go Cousins! :cheer2:

JenG: Have a great time at WDW and with DCL--as if there's any doubt. Take lots of picture for us! :cool1:

Carrie: Thanks for stopping by. Don't compare your posting to mine--you know I have no life. ;)

Nancy: Hellooooo, Lurky Loo! It's good to know you're with us, but prioritizing your upcoming surgery. All things considered, you sound like you're in a good place. That's fantastic news on the 9 pounds, and I know Beth says you've been a true force in keeping both of you going to classes. We'll all be thinking of you on the 25th--and before and after! :grouphug: I know you have the strength and determination to get back in the exercise groove once the doctors give you the all clear. (Keep thinking of DCL and hot young PTs. :rotfl2: ) In the meantime, I hope you enjoy lots of good reading.

JenB: Great job on your run. Woot woot on getting faster, slowly and safely! Hotwire and Priceline have been sending me emails about fabulous deals on off-property hotels and cars, so maybe you can score a good deal if you're leaning in that direction. I so like the convenience of onsite, though... Good luck making a decision!

Julie: Tried running hills is the operative phrase. Reserve being impressed for when I succeed, if ever. :lmao: What 1/2 are you planning in May? Local? Woo hoo for the iPod. About music. What to choose, what to choose? I listen to pop punk music, esp. covers of Motown, etc. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, which JenB mentioned earlier, works for me. I also like anthemic music, like Melissa Etheridge's "I Run for Life" or Rent's "Seasons of Love." Music soundtracks, sometimes, like the theme from "Rocky" or "The Magnificent Seven" and "Time Warp," of course. "Rock this Party" (Boyz Boyz), "Mercy" (Duffy), "Blitzkrieg Bop" (Ramones), "Time Bomb" (Beck). Oh,and I have "Burning Love" and other Elvis, a nod to both my love for the man and 'Ohana!

iTunes is a great place to troll around and listen to clips of new music. I believe Shape magazine posts monthly playlists that you can buy from iTunes if you're looking for new, upbeat stuff. I could go on and on with the music, but that would just make you want to drink some bourbon. (No puddin' meat for you, me, or anyone I like!)

Jeanne & Jackie: Is there anyone who doesn't love Harry Chapin? :goodvibes As for Tim Curry in RHPS, :faint: When I was in college, I dressed as Magenta and had a friend who did Dr. Frankenfurter and totally channeled Tim Curry. Good times.

Skirted Panda: You're a tricky one, you are! I bet you that YOU would make a good Dr. Frankenfurter, too. After all, you're now wearing racing skirts--what's an added garter or two? Trouble? Trouble is my middle name. (It used to be Bobby Vinton's but we swapped.)

Maria: Never heard the Kidzbop version. Kind of loses something in the translation, but I can understand why it's popular. I so think children should have their music and movie tastes warped as early as possible, and that version helps. Everyone I know who gets Tivo, DirectTV, etc., says they soon can't imagine living without it. It's one of the ways DOOD and I can compromise on our favorites and see shows together. I often end up seeing "Lost" a few days afterwards, delaying gratification until we can see it together. (I also find having a DVR encourages me to use my favorite shows as a reward for running....yes, I need to be bribed!)

Connie: I love the three-bite rule, although I seldom follow it. How big can the bites be? (My mouth is really, really big.)

Robert: So sorry to hear LTO and that Linda (and you) continues to face uphill battles with her foot. PD to both of you. Being grounded doesn't come natural to either of you--you're meant to glide smoothly across the race course.

Corinna: Part of the challenge of tracking food, at least for me, is just the kind of quick, on the run, eating that I imagine your crewing day entails. It's so easy to grab a quick nosh. Big willpower on your part. Congratulations on getting out there for a run. Were you a bit cautious/anxious because of Goldendoodle memories? I confess, I'd never heard of "The Hamster Dance" until your post. It's kind of catchy.

Mel: I know exactly what you mean with a new class, new course, new school, and lectures. No matter how much you prep, you feel like you're behind the eight ball from the first day of the semester. It's kind of exhausting and exhilarating. I bet you have groupies in your class. :thumbsup2 And another thumps-up for watching and catching the references in "Lost." Your DD can see her education at work. That's one of the things I like about "Lost," actually. It's not afraid to throw in really smart allusions--heck, it revels in them.

Jackie: Glenn Miller on your playlist? Very cool. That would get ME in the mood, although maybe not to run. Especially a marathon. And I'd love to recommend the low-stress, essentially-no-training plan Bill adopted. But I can't. We saw how that worked out. ;) (Oooooh, I'm so mean. I really did feel bad for him.) Your company's wellness plan is so cool. What incentive. Our health care basically keeps your rates low if you get your physicals, WO, etc., but that's not quite the same thing. Cash works for me. (Have I mentioned how much I hate going to the doctor?)

Tracy: I love that shirt. And the one that says "May the Course be with you." I'm such a geek. I think we should all wear shirts that make use laugh. Anything to keep us happy and inspired!

Dennis: So good to see you here. Wanted to make that 'Ohana card still worked, you know. I know what you mean by the half-marathon being your happy race. It might be mine, too. I didn't know you did MCM! That's supposed to be fabulous (I was a spectator). I noticed you left off any blackmail-able stories from your list. That tells me you have one or two. Hmmmmm. (P.S. I'll refer to you by Denny on the calendar, to distinguish between you and Maria's DH.)

As for me: I've been "delaying gratification" on running today. Last night the winds were 40+ mph. Now, they're still over 30 and not looking like they're going to die down (as promised by my oh-so-trusty meteorologists). So it looks like I'll bite the bullet and try a lunchtime run. I'm sure it'll bring back memories, if not nightmares, of Fargo. :scared1: Anyway, I'll give it a go. Hills and wind. Why did I decide to get off the TM? Oh yeah, this way I get bragging rights for even "trying." :rotfl:

:lmao: There seems to be some confusion about the three bite rule. The bites can be as big as social custom allows. If you are eating with rednecks and/or by yourself (both of which is possible in my case!) then use that society as your judge, likewise a country club in New York....oh wait, I hear that fine dining only gives you three bites to start with...! No choking allowed, if choking is present you must spit out the offending bite and you are not allowed to take any more! Along those same lines, no tossing your cookies, doughnuts, chocolate cake, pie etc is allowed either! Tossing makes people think you are bulemic and they will rush forthwith to an eating clinic, where denial of your desease will prove you have it. :rotfl:

I now declare you the Miss Manners of all my eating habits!

Hi Team!

So sorry to stay away for so long. I've had a busy, busy week getting work done so I can try to leave early Friday for the Austin half marathon (so kind of you to remember, Debra).

I'm unsure how I'll do as the last few weeks of training have been somewhat subpar, but I guess I'll see. That sounds like a recipe for either disaster or a PR.

Oh, and let me add I managed to grab the Treehouse Villas for marathon week in January 2010! (unless I decide to trade it for an OKW Grand Villa at the 7 month mark)

Hi Cousins!

Debra - Thanks for the link to those running shirts - they're great! Thanks also for the suggestion of the Shape mag's playlist recommendations. I'll look into that. I'm also glad that none of us has to eat puddin' meat anytime soon. :thumbsup2

Maria - Did you enjoy the beautiful day yesterday? :cool1: Today is so windy, but at least the snow is melting.

Corinna - Are you ready for opening night? You asked about the half marathon I'm doing - it's a local half marathon in Boston. You also asked about my new iPod - it's a gray nano. I'm still trying to figure it all out. I'm so impressed that you had the courage to walk the dog :dogdance: after "The Goldendoodle Incident of 2008" (can we refer to it as TGI '08? - fewer letters to type).

Mel - I'm with you on the zebra domes - I could definitely eat one of those in less than 3 bites. What kind of class are you teaching? Good luck on your half this weekend! :goodvibes

Jackie - I like your song list! :thumbsup2 Good luck with your 10 miler!

JenB & Corinna - My kids love the Hamster Dance. It hadn't occurred to me to put that on my iPod, but maybe I will...:scratchin

Christa - Good luck with your marathon! :cheer2: I can't wait to hear all about it!

Richard - Good luck with your race! :thumbsup2 I'm looking forward to your race report. Congrats on getting THV for marathon weekend. :woohoo: I can't wait to stay there someday.

Hello  to the rest of my cousins also! Have a great weekend!

:bday: Christa!!

Julie...class is Physical Assessment and Laboratory Skills for Pharmacy students.

Party at Richard's treehouse for marathon weekend! Good luck on your race this weekend! Our weather's lookin' pretty good here...how 'bout you?

I second the party at Richard's treehouse idea-- heck we'll even bring some munchies :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

How many point do those thing run anyway?-- we are DVC but it seems like thye would be pretty pricey (not that I wouldn't try to get one....)

Yikes - tonight is Opening Night for Cabaret! I'm mostly ready. I wish I were down another 10 - no, make it 25 pounds for my appearances as a scantily clad scene changer, but we are just going to have to go with it, I guess.

Today is Friday - any other cousins weighing in today? (I have been WI on Friday because of the Biggest Loser challenge). It was a 2.4 for me this week, which is more than I expected, given my lack of proper work outs, but then I've had a lot of busy days, a lot of steps. And have been pretty good on the food, too. It's been a tough one. The fatigue is here and when I'm tired, food sounds like a great pick-me-up.

I'm not sure I have time to do full shout-outs, but I wanted to do at least responses to responses, so here goes:

Jackie - that program sounds great. I bet you'll win it all this year! I am envying your gorgeous weather. It's cold and bleak here.

JenB, Debra & Julie - and any other Hamster fans - I don't know what it is about that song - it seems like it's just the right combination of factors for peppy running. Pretty silly, though!

Debra - that is the challenge lately. Someone brought in a big bag of candy. I have managed to resist all the BIG stuff - the donuts, the cookies, the cakes, the chips. The candy, though, is insidious. I have done pretty well at not going hog wild, though.

It wasn't a run at all - I would be nervous for that, I think. Just a walk with the dog. I was extra careful, for sure, since TGI of '08. :)

Tiberius - congratulations on nabbing a treehouse! We wanted one for a different very busy time but didn't have enough persistence on Sunday to get one.

JenB - the treehouses are the exact same points as a SSR 2 bedroom!!!

Julie - I'm almost ready for opening night. I have to correct my cheat sheets, gather up the pasteurized eggs and a fresh, red rose and my black unmentionables, and I'll be all set! It will be good to be underway with this thing, for sure!!! And yes, I think your plan of calling it TGI '08 is pretty good! :)

OK - off to get my stuff done. Talk to you all soon!

Quick, quick, quick today. Taking my cue from Mel.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTA!!
:bday: :cake: party: :dance3:

P.S. Corinna, the weight loss. A big, fat 0 loss at the weigh-in. I'm rather upset, but will be over it by tomorrow, I'm sure, just in time for Valentine's day.

Corinna: break a leg!!! (for show biz only, when running I would prefer your legs to be just fine :rolleyes1 )

lets not mentions weigh-ins shall we, I'm with Debra on the 0, at least I didn't gain...

Hello! I signed up to join a WISH team on escape's thread and she told me she'd place me on the Ohana team, which was my 1st choice. :cool1:

Here's my information:

Real-Life Name: Kerry
Location: Shoreline area of Connecticut, but we are moving to Austria in 5 months. My husband is in the Army.
Family/Household: DH (33), DS (8), DS (6), DD (4)
Age: 34
Day Job: stay at home mom, or as we Army people like to say, "Household 6" (which means I am in charge of the household)

Describe your running/walking/biking/swimming/XT background:
I played tennis in high school and the most running I did were the laps around the 8 tennis courts that my coach used to make us do when we double-faulted during a match. Then I went to college and was in Army ROTC. I ran more than a mile for the first time in my life and thought I was going to die. Needless to say, in a few weeks I was running frequently during "PT" (physical training), but I never really loved it. After college I spent 4 years as an Active Duty officer and was stationed at Fort Bragg, where they LOVE to run. I hated every single run, but did it at least 3 days a week and we always ran 6 miles on Fridays. Then I had my kids and that was that. No more running. Till February 2007 when I decided enough was enough and I needed something to motivate me to be active and a good role model to my kids and I signed up for the first half of the San Francisco marathon. My goal was 3 hours and I did it in 2:58 and change! In January 2008 I realized that I needed more motivation in the form of planned events, so within 3 weeks I registered myself for the Army 10-miler in October '08, the Big Sur Half Marathon in November '09 and the WDW Half Marathon in January '09. I discovered the WISH groups when I ran the WDW Half and wished I had been a part of a team as I ran the race by myself. As or XT, for now, I go to the gym a minimum of 3X a week. Twice a week I do Les Mills' Body Pump classes which I love! I also do a spinning class once a week which is a fabulous workout. I'm trying to work out a new schedule for my gym visits to do some more classes.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in 2008? (WISH related or otherwise) My biggest accomplishment in 2008 was getting into the gym and committing to a minimum of 3 gym workouts a week - and I stuck to it! I'm also very proud that I took on homeschooling in 2008 and teach my 6 and 8 year old boys at home now. I never thought I could do it, but it was the best decision we could have made for our family.

What are your WISH goals for 2009? Run more! I sign up for these races because I love the events - not because I actually like to run. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true. So my goal for 2009 is to train better for any events that I do do AND to try to love running. I also want to start training for a full marathon (for 2010).

Planned events for 2009/2010? (Event, place, date, distance)
Nothing yet, because we have an overseas move on the horizon. Not being registered for an event is killing me though. I am seriously considering the Nutmeg State Half marathon at the end of April (in CT), but I am not registered yet. Once we are settled in overseas, I want to find a half (or shorter) race to do in the Fall.
Oh, I almost forgot. I'm registered to participate in a Spinning Nation event on February 28th. It's a charity event for Athletes for a Cure and The Lance Armstrong Foundation. My gym will do a 1-2 hour spin class (they haven't decided yet) that day.

What do you do for fun (besides DIS)? I volunteer with my sons' Cub Scout pack, girl's nights out, baking/cooking, traveling, playing games (game night) with the family, family bike rides

Favorite DIS-friendly curse word. (With apologies to James Lipton.)
Hmm, well, I'm new here and haven't found a reason to curse yet.

In the soundtrack of your life, your theme song would be….
I've never thought about this. Well, I like this song and the lyrics mean a lot to me:
My List (Toby Keith)

I will be traveling alone, hubby is a HS teacher and cannot take vacation then and will watch the girls for me so I look forward to getting tips from those of you who have done this alone..trained for it or traveled for it alone.

Hi Marcy. I'm trying to go through this thread and get to "know" everyone as I am new to the Ohana team too. I did do the WDW Half last month and I did it alone, so I can give you some tips. Something tells me that you won't be alone though as you are now part of a WISH team. I learned about WISH while running the 2009 WDW half. I kept seeing the tee shirts and finally asked someone about it, which is why I am here now. Oh, and I was born in Brooklyn and lived there till I was 7. I don't have an accent, but I definitely have Brooklyn blood in me. :cutie:

Good luck with all of your endeavors this year!

Real-Life Name: Debra
Location: Pittsburgh, abbreviated Pgh if you're a local

Hi Debra! I'm new here (just posted my info on pg. 9) and I'm trying to go through this thread and get to know everyone. I went to the U. of Pittsburgh so I had to say hi! I see you are going to do the Race for the Cure in May. I did that years ago, can't even remember when. ??? Maybe May 1995? I remember running the PGH Great Race a couple of times too, with Pitt ROTC. Good times in PGH!

Thanks for having me on the team! I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Hooray! I'm on O'hana! Looking forward to getting to know all my cousins...

Real-Life Name: Jackie
Location: Raleigh, NC

Hi Jackie! Making my rounds here to get to know everyone. I'm new to the group and just posted my info on pg. 9. You jumped out at me because we share the same goal for our half marathon time for this year, sub 2:45. I did the WDW half in January in 2:48 and now I really want to get it under 2:45. I don't have a race scheduled right now, but once I do, that's my goal! Good luck to you this year and nice to "meet" you!

Hi Jennifer! Your next on my round of hello's!

We are an Army family and had the pleasure of being stationed in Monterey in 2006. LOVED it there and miss CA so much. My sister lives in San Mateo now (works for Nintendo) and I visited her in November and ran the Big Sur Half Marathon while I was there. Your area has the best weather for running year round! I also wanted to add that I love that song Upside Down from the Curious George. It reminds me of my son's school in CA because his teacher used to play that at the end of every day as a sign for the children to clean up and put their work away. Sigh. I miss CA! Nice to meet you!

Real-Life Name: Jennifer
Location: Castro Valley, CA (SF East Bay)
Family/Household: DH, DS5, DS3
Age: 39
Day Job: Marketing for Tech Company

Describe your running/walking/biking/swimming/XT background: Just started last year and ran my first 1/2 marathon last week! Don't have an athletic background, though I was on a swim team in middle school but wasn't competitive and do ski
What accomplishments are you most proud of in 2008? (WISH related or otherwise) Running around my neighborhood lake - about 9 miles
What are your WISH goals for 2009? I'm turning 40 in December and am looking to accomplish something INCREDIBLE ;)
Planned events for 2009/2010? (Event, place, date, distance) DL 1/2 marathon
What do you do for fun (besides DIS)? Travel, hiking, skiing, gardening
Favorite DIS-friendly curse word. (With apologies to James Lipton.) Dang. I guess. I don't really have one.
In the soundtrack of your life, your theme song would be….Upside Down from Curious George
Interesting fact or anecdote about yourself. Blackmail-able stories are welcomed! I was a Soviet Studies major and spent three years living in Moscow. But I promise, nothing to tell about Russia that is blackmail-able. Well, other than the vodka stories...

I'm having such a hard time remembering everyone, but I'm new here, so I'm sure you guys will give me a pass for this month, right? I did read through all of the intro/info posts and you guys seem like a fun group! Now I need to get to bed!
