Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Monday Mixers it is, then! I'll post to the other threads, letting them know the mixer is coming and then remind them on Monday. I agree with Maria, that our prompts don't need to be training questions, but social, etc. because the goal is to know all our cousins better. All of us should get a chance to come up with the "carrot" that tempts our cousins into posting, so suggestions? (Of course, carrots don't tempt ME at all....)

Clarifications: Thanks, Jeanne, for asking. We'll host other teams HERE and visit other teams' threads on their days. Right now, it sounds like Hakuna Matata is having Ice Cream Socials on Wednesdays--thanks Connie! I know that we can't all check in here as frequently as we'd like, but if you have time to hang out here on Monday or Hakuna Matata on Wednesday, I think it would be cool. :thumbsup2

Maria: Amelia Peabody and murder & mayhem? How can I resist?? I'm with you, that I'm always up for what everyone's reading/watching/listening to? Want to come up with the Mixer's inaugural question? And speaking of questions, how did the luncheon/evaluation go. Your awards sound thoughtful and fun! We must discuss Lost soon--DOOD and I haven't watched the most recent episode (tonight) but the previews looked promising!

Beth: Thank you for the jack slap. It stings a little, but in a good way! :rotfl2:

Corinna: Then I'm definitely a slug! I can't really see you this way, but if you want to be the adorable loris, go for it. Ever notice their faces look like techies in Cabaret makeup? And isn't Irish whisky history a head-shaker? Sadly, it just makes me like drinking it even more. (And more sadly is that most of my quirky knowledge comes from television and movies. Gosh, that's why I love Burn Notice so much!) So, are you enjoying Fables. Me, love them, obviously, but some people like their fairy tales straight up. And how did your tempo run go?

Julie: If you are a sloth, and I'm not saying you are, then of course you'd be a three-toed one? Because they're the cutest kind! It seems to me that you've been getting lost of good exercise in,though. Enjoy that Corona, as I'm a big believer that someone should be drinking the beer that I don't--can't let it go to waste. I do think that if DOOD hits the parks at the right time and with the right people (besides his parents and me), he'll be sold on DVC. Beer would probably help, too.

Connie: Yes, I've been following the three-bite rule. (Although I have to admit, I'd been cutting down my at-home desserts into small portions so that three bites is an entire serving. Trying to con myself that I ate an entire brownie. :rolleyes1) Keep those tips coming. And WOO HOO for Ice-Cream Socials on Wednesdays. Almost as much fun as the real thing! :woohoo:

Jeanne: You're ALWAYS partying. (And you never invite us. :sad2: :rotfl: ) I figure you must have been the most responsible, sober parent when your kids were growing up, and now you're making up for lost time, two double-fisted shots at a time! :worship: Seriously, I'm sorry you got sick after your trip to NYC and now DH has it. Especially because of your 1/2 that's coming right up. Scary. Can't help you with the no-training plan. For this year's marathon, I only completed 14 miles before the full, but I was training right up to that last weekend. If anyone can do it, though, you can! (P.S. I think you'd enjoy Fables...just remember they're not the fairy tales your parents told you about!)

Jen: So sorry to hear you've been ill. I do credit you with coming up with a little-known advantage to the TM...the incentive to keep moving. (Me, I just keep staring at the stop button on bad days.) Your travel plans for the Princess is how DOOD and I travel most days. Very last minute, though we try to convince ourselves it's just spontaneous! I'm sure you and DH will have a blast.

Marcy: Oooh, I hope DD is feeling better. That's no fun, no fun at all! Both of you deserve a respite.

Bryan: Thanks for checking in. Yeah, Stitch is the least of our problems.... :lmao:

Robert and Linda:  How frustrating not to be able to even vent about such things! I do hope you keep us up-to-date with other things going on--your RD events, travel plans, etc., those things you can talk about that aren't affected. (As if the lines are so clearly drawn. :headache:)

Nancy: 11 pounds! That's wonderful news! It sounds like you found just the right combination of exercise and motivation. Your surgery will only temporarily interfere, I'm sure, and we'll be thinking of you on that day and afterwards! Do you have your home library stocked?

As for me: Unfortunately, I pulled a back muscle Wednesday night that's thrown my WO schedule off. I tried walking today, slow, and it's painful. I'm going to try a modified WO tomorrow at the gym. I told DOOD I was upset, not only because it hurts, but because I didn't pull the muscle doing anything athletic. I literally bent down to pick up something and immediately felt pain? :confused3 So I don't even get bragging rights for the injury. And that makes me cranky.

Also in the cranky department, guess who DOESN'T get to go to her all-day Oscar fest? I'd asked DOOD to pick up the tickets last week--his commute is near the theater--and he put it off until yesterday. They're all sold out. He feels horrible, of course, because he'd told me it was all taken care of & then had to recant. I'm trying to look at it as all for the best, what with my back, but I'm still a little peeved. On the bright side, it's so seldom that DOOD fraks up I figure I should bank this one for the next time I pull a block-headed stunt. I figure that'll be in about 48 hours or so. :rotfl2:

The Monday Mixer sounds like a great idea, esp. for someone like me who's new to the boards. Thanks!

Ok, I'll head back over to Buzz's Brigade for now ... see you Monday:)

Hi Team!

Thanks to all for the kind words of support for my finish at the Austin Half Marathon. It really was a great race and I am thinking of doing the full there next year.

It's getting late so I'm off to bed (after reading another chapter of Children of the Mind) so I can get my long bike ride in tomorrow as I am now in training for the CB&I Triathlon in May. I have also jumped ahead and registered for the San Antonio Rock n Roll Marathon in November for the 2nd year. I had such a great time last year that I am already looking forward to it!

Soo, Monday Mixers?

Does that mean that interlopers can't mix it up on some non-Monday day?

Probably for the best. One day a week of me is usually about one more day than anyone can stand as it is.

I have not forgotten my cousins...

JenB- Re: DVC - if only we'd realized back when WLV went up for sale that we'd go as often as we have, it would have made sense then. Now we have college to pay for, and DD will be on her own soon, so now's not a very smart time to become DVC members. But oh, how I wish!

Kerry - A very belated :welcome:

Nancy - Congrats on the weight loss! And good luck with the surgery.

Kathy - :welcome:

Maria - Since I need something new to read (well, if I EVER get through Scarpetta), I just requested Outlander based on your recommendation to Debra. Same story here - waiting list! I tried Elizabeth Peters once, but for some reason just could not get into her, which surprised me since everything about the series sounded really intriguing!

Jeanne - If DH can "finish" a marathon with a 6 mile run, you certainly can do a half after having completed a marathon in January! I was hoping to do Crystal Coast next weekend, but I'm in the same boat you are - have done 1 10-miler since January, and I just can't justify the trip even to Morehead City! Sorry you've been sick.

Debra - You can't claim unmotivated slug. I have the copyright on that title. You at least have activity to report. I have the grand total of 1 10 miler and 1 3 mile TM run since the marathon. No XT at all. Thank goodness I have to walk the puppies, or my heart might have forgotten to pump.

As for me: It's been a LONG couple of weeks. DD18 and her best friend had a "falling out" last Monday, which led to many tears. DD decided she hated school (last semester of senior year) and didn't want to go back. Finally got her to meet with the asst principal on Thursday and had her explain why you can't just drop your classes and not impact your college admissions. Then she decided that since she's madly in love with her boyfriend :lovestruc , there's no reason to wait until after college to get married so she wants to get married before she starts. After a call to our minister, that seems to be effectively tabled as well, but I know I have considerably more gray hair than I did a week ago! Then we spent last night and this morning at an interview weekend for ECU's most prestigious scholarship - she's already made the cut from 800 applicants to 70 finalists, and if she is awarded one of 11 scholarships, she basically gets a free ride for 4 years plus a semester abroad. :woohoo:

So yeah, I need to run. I need to sleep. I need to sleep so I can run. I need to run so I can sleep. I probably need one of Beth's jack slaps to get me back to reality so life can return to normal, if I only knew what normal consisted of. :lmao: Barring any more DD crises, I should be able to join my off-season Galloway group next weekend.

You're spaced out on sensation
Like you're under sedation

Jackie

Debra I may have missed it but I have a quick question or two about the Monday Mixer. 1) What time frame are you talking about? I would love to do it but I will be at work during the day and then I go to the gym for a couple of hours afterwards. :confused3 2) Are the Mixers going to be held on the Ohana thread or are you going to start a seperate thread for the event? Just wondering.

Team You are all doing such an awesome job and really developing into a family. Plus, you have several personal friends of mine that I know are great people!! (You know who you are!) Keep it up gang!!

Bryan:cheer2: :grouphug:

Jackie: impressive DD drama, makes me glad my little one is only 5 and the biggest drama we had this week was lecturing her not to write her name on the mousepad in pen.. kind of minor... she is really excited that she got her first webkin online and spent loadsa of time "buying" stuff for her unicorn. I must remember to appreciate this age :)

I forget who asked, but my take on the Eargon series is that they are fun, mindless fantasy books which are sort of predictable but not so much so that it takes away the fun. The movie did not in any way do the book justice. I thought Eldest was at least as good as the first one, if not better. The most recent book was ok but spent way too much time on fight scenes for my liking. That being said, I can't wait for the next one to come out (it was supposed to be a trilogy but got expanded to four books).

Jeanne: I'm sure you will do fine with the race. My DH will be there too so your husband won't feel like the only guy running.

As for my training I tried some speed intervals yesterday. I would walk for 2 min then run for 2 adding .2 mph to the speed with each run. I realized my max is 7mph, any faster than that and I'm just as likely to fall backward off of the TM. :scared1: I have great respect for the elite runners-- I could barely hold onto 7mph for 2 minutes let alone faster than that for a whole race. It was kind of fun to push myself, but boy are my legs feeling it today. I'm taking an official rest day and doing my LR tomorrow.

Ok - so I found the spreadsheet where we are suppose to post our numbers. I logged in but do not have access to add my miles/minutes. What am I doing wrong? :confused3

Ok - so I found the spreadsheet where we are suppose to post our numbers. I logged in but do not have access to add my miles/minutes. What am I doing wrong? :confused3

I'm not 100% positive, but if the spreadsheet works like it did last year only the team captain and co-captain can post activity (although anyone can view it.)

OMG, Jackie, I can so sympathize with you. Teens are miserable people...... and we all know what a good kid Annie is! Been there, done that....4 TIMES! And people wonder why I like to get wasted:rolleyes1
Seriously, it will all work out. I've got my fingers crossed that she will snag one of those awesome scholarships. Is it an "all or nothing" type deal? In other words, it she doesn't get the big one, will she still get a partial for being a finalist?

Jenn: glad to hear that you and Butch will be at the Princess half. I just heard that Matt will be there too. So now we have at least 3 guys: Fast, faster and........turtle! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Think of the positives: at least you and I will get double goody bags.

My dinner party was a great success last night. Nobody wanted to go home so I take that as a very good sign. It was Italian themed so I made some Amaretto shooters. It's such a shame that I really hate Amaretto because I just ending up dumping the extras. We have so much food left over. I spent all morning rearranging my freezer to fit it all in.

John and I were going to try to get a 10-miler in, but the weather is really crappy and since we are both getting over being sick, we decided to go to the movies instead. It's a toss-up between "Coraline" in 3D or "Slumdog Millionaire" Any suggestions?

Not training for the PH was really stressing me out, so I've just decided to go and enjoy it and not worry about my time. As long as I can finish within the official pace requirements, everything will be OK. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Jeanne: I bheard good things about Slumdog if you are looking for suggestions. I haven't seen it myself (we never go out, if you can't rent it, I haven't seen it) but someone at work was raving about how great it was. And yes, I'm looking forward to double goodies.

Debbie: I know I'll see you Monday, but thanks for checking in here early! I especially like to get to meet new meat, er, newbies! :thumbsup2

Richard: Are you enjoying rereading the Ender series? I already know the basic answer to that, so WHAT are you enjoying most? Great news on the new events--I remember how much you liked San Antonio last year, so that race is in my future plans, although not this year. I know you'll have a great time without me, which doesn't quite seem fair. ;) :rotfl2:

Mike: You can always mix it up with us, although we're pretty much mixed up on our own! I also think you underestimate how appealing your wit is--once a week isn't nearly enough.

Jackie: Wowsa on the home front! I bet that two weeks felt like two years of adolescent angst all packaged for quick consumption. I'll bet you my last dollar the BFF fallout and desire to get married went hand in hand, emotionally. Glad you have a support system to help you through this--and hopefully a stylist who will cover those gray hairs. (I so depend on mine, and I don't have kids!) On the up front, we're all so proud of DD and making it so far in the scholarship process. I'll keep thinking good thoughts that she makes the final, final cut. Btw, I'm still claiming slugdom--you'll have to slow down to take the title from me!

Bryan: All day Monday will be the mixer--so many of us log in at different times. I'm hoping that folks who can will check in at least a couple of times, but no pressure. Even reading others' posts, let alone responding, will give us a better sense of WISHers, I think. For now, we'll have the Mixer on our thread and I'll link to the first post in my reminder. If the mixer is really successful, we'll think about a new thread. (So many intelligent questions that I don't really consider. Ah, the downfall of being a big-picture thinker.)

JenB: Great job on the interval speed training. I wouldn't be surprised if you get faster than that with time, seeing as you're really quite new to running and have been focused on distance. That's what DOOD says, anyway, and I consider him to be pretty knowledgeable. Thanks for the review of Eargon and the series; I keep meaning to read it, though I'm a sci fi fan first/fantasy second reader. (Still, never met a genre I didn't like.)

Kathy: I think the document is set up so that I need to have your email address to give you editing access. Some of the other teams had some problems, so I might have shut down editing as an open function. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll open it up to you. (And I'll send you a PM with this information, too.)

Jeanne: Great dinner party. Not an Amaretto fan? I wouldn't have guessed. I admire you for being so dedicated to a theme that you serve drinks you'd throw away. :scared1: By now you've made your decision about the movies, and I hope you had a good time. FWIW, Slumdog will take Best Pic at tonight's Oscars (not nec. my choice, but there it is). I haven't seen Coraline, yet, but it's supposed to be excellent. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

All my cousins: Any mixer questions you've come up with? Please? Be prepared to be chatty on Monday, I'm hoping for a lively social gathering. (As if I have to tell you to be chatty. :lmao:)

As for me: My back is better, and I managed a short run today followed by a walk before twinges started. So I went back to the elliptical to finish out the WO. Tomorrow, if all goes well, back to weights. Tonight is the Oscars, though, and I still need to fill out my ballot/betting sheet. Fun, fun, fun! :woohoo:

Good Evening, Cousins!

I did 30 on the exercise bike, and that felt like plenty for today. Tomorrow I should be back to 4 mi before work, I'm hoping to hear some more of the new to me (ok, they were new in the '80s, but you know what I mean!) tunes I downloaded a few days ago.

Debra -- No pressure, just whip a question out of thin air...it's hard to know where to start, so here's one you can use or toss. "What song made you laugh out loud the last time you heard it?" I burst into laughter on the bike this afternoon, so that's where my mind is. :lmao: I'm really glad to hear your back is better, and I hope the Oscars are a joy -- even if you didn't get your marathon. You are very forgiving, I'm sure DOOD feels like dirt, so milk that for whatever you can get! ;)

JenB -- Netflix is my friend! We actually set a record and watched all three of our movies this weekend (we do 3 at a time). Now I have a little wiggle room in what to get next. I'm watching "Rome", but I only do that when ds is literally out of the house. Way too many nekkid people, and way too much violence. If I didn't have a soft spot for Kevin McKidd, I probably wouldn't have started watching it, and now I'm hooked!

Jeanne -- I'm sure your dinner party was awesome! I guess my invitation got lost in the mail, 'cause I love amaretto! :rotfl: I hope you enjoyed whichever movie you saw today. I'll go ahead and wish you and Jen (and anyone else who's going!) luck at the PH, but I know you won't need it! princess:

Jackie -- Wow, and I thought Tweensville was a horror story! The worst thing my guys do is eat all the food in the house, I can't imagine what you went through this week! Should you need to escape (figuratively, if not literally), try the 2nd Elizabeth Peters book in the series. The first one is kind of awkward, and she really became more engaging from the 2nd one on. Just try it, if you don't like it all you lost is a trip to the library. :thumbsup2

Nancy -- :woohoo: Look who surpassed her weight goal! :worship: You are my hero! Fanfreakin'tastic job! :yay:

Robert -- I second Debra's post. Please do talk about the things you can -- life, the universe and everything. Oh, wait, is that 42? (Yes, I am such a geek). We love to hear from you, and we hope Linda is soon moving like the champion we know she is! :cool1:

Marcy -- Your the first person I "know" who was affected by the outbreak. I'm so glad to hear DD is improving! It's great to see you here, I'm glad we didn't scare you away! :grouphug:

Connie -- Did you know New Englanders eat more ice cream per capita than any other region of the U.S.? Count me in! I'm coming and I'll bring the Cherry Garcia!

Julie --Did you survive the 2nd double playdate? That is way too much work! DH took ds snow tubing yesterday in Amesbury. They had a blast, and I watched 3 episodes of Rome, Y&R (yes, I admit it, I am addicted), Moonlight, and BSG. Everyone had a good day, even the cat who laid on my lap all morning. :cat:

Corinna -- Are you breathing again yet? You must be exhausted! The theme from Cabaret was the first thing I ever had to play in a band recital -- trust me, only parents could love that rendition! 7 years of flute, 3 of piccolo, and now I couldn't play a note to save my life...well, maybe then! :cutie:

Richard -- You can't go wrong with OSC! My problem is I never want to put the book down and go to sleep! :lovestruc

Kathy and Kerry -- How's it goin'? I've never stayed at the Poly, but we once enjoyed breakfast with Lilo and Stitch. We had an awesome view of the castle, and it's my favorite character meal to date. I loved the "family style all you care to eat". It's so nice to have that service without having to get up, especially with characters sashaying around! :stitch2:

Christa, Denny, Mel and anyone else I missed -- :dancer: I hope you had that kind of a weekend!

Bryan, Beth, Mike, and other visiting family -- So glad to see you, stop by anytime! :flower3:

The evaluation/awards luncheon went really well. I was so glad most of the staff made it. They were laughing at their awards, and that afternoon we found out that all their programs were refunded plus the new one we created, so it was a great day. Now I just need the VP who attended to mention it was great to my boss, who couldn't be there. That would certainly be useful! :rolleyes1

Ok, gotta finish getting ready for tomorrow. Still some :laundy: calling my name!

Maria :upsidedow

Maria: Great job on the bike and with the new tunes--one of my favorite bribes for WOs well done. Or even half done. I watched "Rome" when it was first out, and loved the first season. Probably for the same reason you're watching. (My cats don't like nekkid people, btw, so they were shunted off to the bedroom.

Btw, I'm so using your prompt for tomorrow--and your other prompt, too. (Didn't know you had another prompt, did ya?) It's sure to provide some levity, which we all need. Great idea! :thumbsup2

As for me: Just finished watching the Oscars. My tally this year--18/24 right. Dang. I can't believe how they shut out "The Dark Knight" on the some of the more technical awards. Oh well, at least Sean Penn trumped Mickey Rourke. A good upset, if minor, on a major award. Life is good.

Welcome to Team 'Ohana's Monday Mixer!

Our loose topic for 'Ohana's first Monday Mixer is "What song made you laugh out loud the last time you heard it?"

Of course, you don't need to stick with the prompt. You can talk about the last thing that made you laugh out loud, period. Or the Oscars, Nascar, Pixar. Or the meaning of life, the universe and everything. (Although we cousins know the answer is 42. You'll learn to love our geekdom. :rolleyes1 )

So jump on in, the water's fine. We'll be passing out drinks soon. And know that we've very happy to have you here! :woohoo:

Well hello Team Ohana! Allyson here from the Rebel Alliance! Thanks for the invite to your mixer, you guys are so cool to come up with this idea! I feel like I got invited to sit at the cool table for lunch today!

What song made me laugh out loud? Hmmmm, tough one. Got it. It needs a little setup. Apparently on one of the American Idol shows a contestant messed up the words on a Carrie Underwood song and it came out "My Mama's always baking cakes " (supposed to be My Mama would be so ashamed).

Well my 6 year old messed it up more and has been singing around the house:

My Mama's always baking bacon cakes:dance3:

Bacon cakes? Huh? Gave me a chuckle, I think you had to be there though!

Have a great Monday!

Allyson

Welcome Allyson! -- that song makes me laugh out loud with the real lyrics, the "special" ones are even more hilarious!

I guess I'd better answer the question. I would have been here earlier, but I had to clean up the place -- with having company and all! ;)

I was on the exercise bike yesterday when Poison's "Talk Dirty to Me" came on the ipod. I had just added it to my playlist the night before, so this was the first time I'd heard it in a good long while. I started laughing because of the memory I associate with this song.

I was a very green college freshman, and I and some friends went to a frat party, and one girl brought along her "very cool" mom (I know, but at least I never tried to bring my mom!). Mom had never had the college experience and wanted to well, experience it. So people are dancing, people are chatting, people are mingling...and this song comes on. The mom is running from room to room trying to find the daughter, because it's the daughter's favorite song and she wants to dance with her. Why am I laughing? One of my friends comes up to me and tells me the daughter is in the backyard with some guy, uh, mingling. Somehow, I don't think mom meant she really wanted to know that much about her daughter's life. So everytime I hear that song I see the mom running around in my head and start laughing out loud!

I can't wait to hear what's making other people laugh. :welcome: to our first innaugural Monday Mixer!

Maria

Aloha, cousins! Thanks for the invitation and for hosting this luaua (oh, that is so not the right spelling...).

To answer the question, I have 2 different songs (either because I am overly-verbose or because Allyson's post reminded me of another song) that make me laugh out loud. The first is Chelsey by Stefy. The song itself is pretty mediocre, but the first time I heard it was when i was watching my gym's video channel. The video features Adam West as a judge (pretty much parodying himself) and has some hilariously bad acting all around. So, now it makes me at least smile when i hear it.

The second song is Wild Thing. When my son, now 10, was a toddler, he insisted the lyrics were "wild thing, you make my horse sing." One day, I was having one of those days we all experience when in the constant company of toddlers. It occurred in the office at a private elementary school where we were awaiting a meeting with the principal for my older son, for whom we were considering various schools prior to enrolling him in kindergarten. Anyway, I calmly asked him to stop singing at the top of his lungs and oh, btw, it is "you make my heart sing" not "you make my horse sing." To which my delightful cherub replied (again at the top of his lungs) "WELL, THAT MAKES NO FREAKING SENSE! WHO EVER HEARD OF A HEART SINGING?!?!"

and for enquiring minds, the word he actually said was not the PG-rated (and DIS-friendly) "freaking" (the joys of a vocabulary learned from a mother driving in New York traffic), and no, we did not send either son to that school.

Hi all,

I've got the welcome mat out! And if you act real quickly I can probably rescue some partially melted amaretto shooters from my trash! (Yes, Deb, I ABHOR Amaretto, Frangelico, any of those sweet nutty cordials. Just give me a cognac or a shot of Irish whiskey and I'm happy as can be, but those sticky sweet things turn my stomach.)

Maria: LOVE that song! OMG, Poison.....what a trip! Funny, funny story! Luckily my kids never thought I was cool (and I wasn't) until they got well into their college careers........ and now we're best buds. Before that I was the dreaded "she that must be obeyed" :scared1:

I can't recall laughing out loud at a song recently. Actually, I can't recall doing much listening to music recently at all. I've been cooking and cleaning, you guys! But I did hear one yesterday that made me smile......."Wherever You May Go" by the Calling. It's the soundtrack for the final Colin Thistle thread in Love Actually, which is one of my favorite movies. Gotta love that Colin Thistle with his big *** (Yes, it's 3 letters and if you don't know, go see the movie!)

Thanks for the invite O'hana! Lets see.......I think the last time I laughed out loud with a song is the end of one of my September 1/2 marathons when the Rocky theme started to play (((((I actually think it was the Philly half, which is even funnier since the statue was probably a few feet away from me at the time))))))) What's the chances of that, not having planned it!

Beth

Good Morning Team 'O. Thanks for being neighborly! Yesterday I was working on a midterm so I put Lilo & Stitch on for background noise. Whenever Hawaiian Roller coaster plays I loudly sing the Hawaiian part although I haven't a clue what the words should be. It always makes me laugh.
