teachers...

I just went to open house at the high school for my DS. He really needed it!!! I only got to speak with four teachers, though, because the lines were so long to see them. We're only supposed to take five minutes each, but there were people who took up to 20 minutes. :earseek: That was ridiculous.

My friend teaches sped there and said she actually had five parents show up that night -- a record for her! Usually nobody shows up and she uses it as prep time.

I am here, agog that parents actually don't attend IEPs? I missed one because I couldn't get out of work, but my DH was there. How can a child get the best education to meet their needs if the parents don't even go? If I was a teacher, I'd be very upset.

Our school was thrilled this past teacher conference night-85% participation. (Yes, I'm one of those parents with a kid that we really need the conferences-with all the ESE teachers and general ed.)

I can do one better than that. We had a parent request that her child be evaluated for special education services. Now that all the testing is finished and we need to go over the test results, we can't get her to come to a meeting. She's always too busy! But she wanted him tested in the first place...

I knew what I was getting into when I put my DD into that school. They want parent involvement.

Oh, I'm not saying that a parent shouldn't be involved...actually I applaud you (and all the other involved parents) for getting involved in their children's school. I've just never heard of mandatory PTA meetings before. There are lots of ways to be involved besides going to PTA meetings.

I cant imagine not going to teacher conferences and open house. I know it does happen because I have heard many a teacher say that the parents of the kids that really need it never show up. Within each grade in our school there is the gifted class, regular ed class, and remedial class. I was told by one teacher that virtually every parent shows up in the gifted class but by the time you get to the remedial class hardly any of the parents show up. Maybe just maybe their kids would be doing better in school if they got involved a little more??? My one son is highly gifted and the other is in the gifted but that doesnt mean I sit on my laurels and dont talk with the teachers and go to conferences etc.... I make sure they know that I am available to them if they have any concerns, comments, ways I can help, etc...

Thank you teachers for all you do!
