Teachers: What names are you sick of?

I teach a sport in the evenings and we've told the kids (and its somewhat true) that nicknames are common among the players (becuase in the sport were consistently identified by our near inpronounceable last names). So whenever we get a number of kids with the same names or hard to remember names, out come the nicknames. It becomes so prevalent that no one in the class really knows what the kids real names are. In fact, we held a tournament for several of the classes last week and one of my older kids came in and signed up with his name and I was wondering who the heck it was. So then I looked up and oh, of course, that's Bono. :goodvibes Later in the tournament someone said, "Hey, do you know Gareth?" To which I responded, "Yes of course, but his name's Bud."

DH is a BJ. It's a nickname his family stupidly saddled him with. He used to hate it, got teased mercilessly in school and tried to change his nickname. He found out that was basically impossible. By the time he got to college he'd accepted it and embraced it and ultimately it's made him a stronger person.

Besides, at least that kid knows how everyone's going to tease him. Meanwhile, you have kids like me with no obvious jokes in our names and which result in great tween creativity. My maiden named rhymed with a portion of the male anatomy.:sad2:

Is B.J. his legal name though? This is the kid's legal name, not short for Brian James or anything, just B.J.

Yuck.

Here's are some on my hometown's website:

Abigayle (I, too, despise the 'Kreeee8tiv' spellings)
Dillyn (of course this is a girl, because if you add a y to a name, it makes it girly)
Ashtyn (oops. I was wrong. This one's a boy)
Hudson
Torstyn (??? a boy)
Shylinae Symone (girl)
Audrina Dream (someone's read VC Andrews!)
Aeyana Kilikiki (girl....)
Thailer (boy)
Newaehrose Sherree (I'm sure this is misspelled, and is, in fact the super-popular name Nevaeh. I have nothing nice to say about this name)
Reino (boy...does this rhyme with Drano?)
Brayon Abel Rabbit Head (I really hope this is a Native American)
Mylee Rose (Yey! A Miley Cyrus fan had a baby!!)
Kiefer
Beautifull (really?)
Briseis (girl, I don't know how this is pronounced)
Kynsli (girl)
Jazlyn
Talley (boy)
Lincoln (boy)
Miryilyn (what the hell?)
Syleena

Wow. Just wow.

I have a Lovely in my class this year.

My daughter is in 7th grade, her name is Jenna. I loved "Another World" when I was younger.

I never heard another Jenna until we moved to California for a short time and then there were 3 Jenna's on my DD's softball team.

We moved back to NY....still no Jenna's.

ETA: DD corrected me..there is one other Jenna she knows in her middle school.

Is B.J. his legal name though? This is the kid's legal name, not short for Brian James or anything, just B.J.

No, nickname. But it's basically the name he uses with everything. He very rarely introduces himself by his full first name and when he does I know it's a situation he's uncomfortable with. I'm not saying the kid won't get teased. Oh, he will. But then, who doesn't? DH is adamant about not naming any son we may have William (although it's my favorite name) because he'll be called Willie. Well, so?

Kamryn, Cameron, Camryn, and more versions of the same.

I wanted to name one of my sons Cameron, in 1998. While I was pregnant, I met two babies, one boy, one girl named Cameron. I decided that it was going to be too popular and changed my mind.

When I was pregnant with my twins, DH and I wanted to use names that were a little different. DH's last name is very common. We chose Roman and Bryce. The first few years I met two other Bryces, I was worried that it was becoming popular. When the boys were six, I met two other Romans, same worry. So far that is all I have met, hopefully it will stay that way.

I am a Jamie. It was never too popular until the Bionic Woman. I was seven when it came out. After that there were a ton of Jamies. It seems to have calmed down. I don't meet many Jamies any more.

Well my name is Michele (one "l", please) and I have always loved it and my daughter's name is Emily. It was a name I have loved since I was a little girl so it was the only name I ever wanted for my daughter. So, sorry if you cringe when you see it but she loves it too:cheer2:

Don't teach any more but in the early 90s Zachary was very common! I used to love that name but after a while I just could not stand it. it didn't help that one of my Zachary's was a dickens! ;)

I feel for my son's teacher tough, this year in his class (3rd grade) there is Madison (2x), Margaret, Mikayla, McKenna and a Mykensi. Talk about a mouth full!!!

My son is an Aiden who was born in 2001. It's a name I'd liked for a boy for a long time and was not popular at the time. :snooty:

It didn't make the top 100 popular baby names until 2003. I do cringe when I hear all of the -den variations now.

I have twins in kindergarten (in separate classes) and they each have a Madison, an Isabella, and a Grace in their classroom.

It does get confusing. Cute names though. :thumbsup2

I'm sick of names that are intentionally misspelled to be unique. Misspelling a name only makes it annoying. I don't mind unusual names or common names. Just spell it the normal way.

Ex. - Like spelling Tina as Teena

Why? Why? Why? The person will never find anything with their name on it and will have to spell their name for people their entire lives. That does not sound fun.

That is all.

Ditto this, exactly. My name wasn't intentionally misspelled, but rather is 1 of 3 common variations of its spelling (Jodie). I happen to love the way my name is spelled, but it does kind of get annoying, having to spell it EVERY SINGLE TIME I have to give it to someone (and even then, it ends up misspelled half the time. Grr.) Why someone would take a more common name and give it a bizarre spelling is beyond me.

My daughter's 5th grade class has 4 Sara/Sarahs -- 8.3%. And my daughter's 7th grade class has 3 Rachel/Rachaels -- another 8.3% . And for some reason, most siblings of a Rachel have a Sarah -- I guess if you like one, you like the other!

In our Kindergarten we have 3 Graces -- at least they put one in each of the three classrooms. When my daughter was in 4th grade all 4 Sarah's were in the same room!

There were 6 Jennifers in my kindergarten class (very late '70s). I don't know how the poor teacher kept everybody straight!

My mom saddled me with a weird spelling, Jaimee. It frustrated me when I was a kids because nobody spelled it correctly (as a kid you don't understand why people can't spell your name...) I guess I'm used to it now though. I named DS Isaiah and although it is the traditional spelling, nobody can spell it lol. It seems to be pretty common around here when we're out, but there's only one other Isaiah in his school.

His grade (5th..) is filled with Jacks, Jacobs, Jadens,Jalens,Sams,Seans, Alecs (Alex)Emily, Abigail (Abby),Graces and Hannahs.

Glad to see that the names I've chosen for my future children aren't here. I don't really plan on ever having children, but if I did, the names would be Audrey Caroline and Aleksandr David.

I'm a middle school teacher and have about 40 Katelyn's and they are all spelled different! There are a lot of Kaylee's too that are all spelled wrong.

In the past year I've taught about a million students named:

- Bethany
- Lauren
- Connor
- Rhys
- Jessica
- Emily
- Megan
- James
- Jack
- Maddy (either Madeleine or Maddison)

The big one though is Eleanor/Ellie. I have had classes where half the girls are called something beginning with Ell- (Ellen, Eleanor, Ellie etc.).

A cousin in the family just named her baby girl Nevaeh...Heaven spelled backwards! :lmao: I'm sorry but isn't spelling heaven backwards somewhat blasphemous?:rotfl:

That's funny. My name is Joy, I used to wish it was spelled Joi. I think its cute when being creative with spellings. The only time is bothers me is when you have to get a job (for resume).

I am traditional I have a George and a Catherine.

But, in DS's class the hard J sound names are almost 1/2 the class. J'hyda, Jaylen, Jordan, Javine, Jonah, Jameisha and Jaiden are the names in his class.

Also the Damian, Dante and all the derivatives are also rampant here.

Another good question to ask would be is there a name you could not name your child because of a former student or someone you knew who you could not stand with that name? :)
