Teachers: What names are you sick of?

Doesn't always work, my son's name (Jackson) was at number 100 the year I was pregnant with him. I like the name and thought it would not become too popular. I was wrong! I believe last year Jackson was in the 30s for popularity!

Most of the Jacksons I know or hear around town are younger then my Jackson.

Although I still love the name Jackson, I wish it was die down in popularity!

Same with Cameron. It was pretty rare now, not so much. Also Kaylee, but she goes by Kate at school and she is the only one with that name.

my name is Vanessa and in school most everyone called me red -- (the hair you know)....when I met DH I became V ---- I guess the three syllables is a killer for him to do!

My name is Holly but since we live in Holley-Navarre they keep spelling it Holley.

I mean, really, Holly is the basic spelling..

There are a million other ways:
Holly
Holley
Holli
Holle
Hollie
Hollee

Sigh.

Any name that is the name of a PLACE: Paris, Madison, Dakota, India, Georgia, etc.

About 13 years ago I was a counselor at a Salvation Army camp. Every week we had at least 1 little girl named Asia. One week I had 5 - all in one cabin. 4 went by Asia (the traditional pronunciation) and 1 went by "Ah-zha." THAT was confusing.

As far as "unique" names, I had a Unique, Goddess, and more than 1 Precious.

I love the name Holly...we are considering it for our baby girl due in April.

question for not just you but all...do you really experience people getting mad at a mispronunciation? Usually it seems they would just turn around and correct you?:confused3

Yes, I have. We have a little boy at school named LaDonya. You'd think Luh-don-yuh, right? Nope, his name is Luh-don-yay. He gets angry and his mother gets angry if his name is mispronounced.

We have another named Juanyah. He and his mother get angry if it's pronounced as it looks - Wahn-yuh or Wah-nie-uh. It's Wahn-yay.

That's a beautiful name!

Like Vanessa, a great name you don't hear too often.:thumbsup2

:sad2:
Why didn't they just spell it how they wanted it pronounced?! I think that's another of my name pet peeves.

Oh, and I realize that no one can help what becomes popular. The only reason I'm Jessica and not Jennifer is because there were already a few Jennifers in the nursery the day I was born. ;)

I've had to correct people my whole life with my name. Ya get used to it, really. In school I was called by my last name alot cause subs just didn't know how to say my name. Angele, it's An-jel-e. I'd never met anyone with my name until this year. DD's preschool has an Angelie in the AM class. Spelling it Angelie will probably cut down on the mispronounciations. I know the beginning is supposed to be the french AHN-GEL-E, but I didn't like it that way, too stuffy sounding for me.

I named DD Lillian and stupidly thought it wasn't very popular. Now I hear people calling for Lily's everywhere. Blast! I named DD a normal name because I had such an unusual name growing up and it was a pain in the butt when I was a kid. Really. I've been called everything else besides my name. Angelina (wth?), Angel, Angela, Anjelly. Looking back it was kinda funny though. When teachers would go thru the name list I always knew they were at my name when they stopped talking and a blank look would come on their faces. :rotfl:

I have a high school student named Tylor. I always call him Taylor by mistake, because of the "O"- he gets so mad.
Tylor sounds like he should be a bad guy on He-Man or something. :rotfl:

I think Kaylee is right near the top of disliked names. It just doesn't sound like a "real" name. It sounds like a nickname or something. And I really can't picture an adult woman named Kaylee.

You know, I get called Jennifer ALL the time. And Stephanie?:confused3

I have a Matthew. I had no idea about name popularity (we were the first of our friends to have kids). Fast forward to preschool. 4 Matthews out of 25 kids. He has had another Matthew in his class a couple times since then, but the other one usually goes by Matt.

We learned our lesson with our girls and their names were 190th and 178th the year they were born (according to babynamewizard).

My nephew is Jack. But at school he has always been Jack L. because there are at least 2 if not 3 Jacks in his class.

He was so excited that this year his sister is Abby L. so she has to deal with trying to figure out who the teacher is calling. Maybe it's more frustrating for boys than girls?

I can say I have never gotten mad at someone mispronoucing my 7 year olds name. When someone has said it wrong or is struggling I just step in and tell them how to say her name. I knew when I decided to play with the spelling I was going to run in to issues.

OP: My DH is named Tyler. It was not that popular for his age group, but we cannot go anywhere without hearing a Tyler getting yelled at. Every time my DH looks up like he did something wrong. ;)

Well, I named my son Torin, which was unique to me, but may be considered weird by others.
My middle daughter's middle name is Torin. (I know it's a male name, but no one else does. :rotfl: ) I have never met anyone else with the name.

My daughter's name is Alysia (pronounced like Alicia Silverstone) which is always pronounced Alicia!
My oldest's name is Aysia. People are constanly trying to slip that L in and call her Alissa.

Yes, people often get mad at a mispronunciation. Especially parents. I'm never too botherd by it. I either correct the person or just ignore it. But I have seen many parents yell and act like the person was an idiot for not knowing how to spell or pronounce their child's name.

The parents would get miffed. Especially if someone mentioned the name was spelled wrong. Of course it is NOT spelled wrong, that is the legal spelling of the kids name, the way they chose to spell it, it is NOT wrong. (I see their point there)
My aunt had this problem with her daughter's kindergarten teacher. The child's name was Jullia (two Ls). The teacher kept correcting the name on all her papers with huge red Xs and after the first week of school started taking points off for spelling her name wrong and yelling at the child for it. Normally my aunt would not be upset about assuming the usual spelling, but that was a bit much for a 5 year old to deal with.

My name is never spelled correctly. It's Candace (no I). Everytime someone goes to write my name I automatically say it and start spelling it. It doesn't bother me anymore. Now if they try to call me Candy we have problems. :upsidedow

Being an Amy in the 80s was pretty bad too. Aimmee Aimee Amy Aime, I constantly get asked how I spell my name. Plus in school there was at least one other Aimee or Amy in there. I think my class had 3 or 4 Amy's.

OMG, YES!!!

In my graduating class of 127, 7 of us were some variation of Amy, 3 of us had the exact same initials (two of us the same middle name) and all 3 were in the same English class.

The only thing I do not care for is all of the spelling variations.

I named my DD Erin thinking it would be a nice, normal yet not too common name and I am now having to say "Erin with an E" when I call for appts and such. And there has not been too many Austin's DS's age.

Even spellings of simple names can cause problems. When someone asks DP her name she immediately starts spelling - A-N-N-no E. Yup. We got our first of many mailings for Annoe. :lmao:

My girl's names aren't on anybodys "tired of" list. Cassidy is the only 16 yo we now know of (there actually was a boy Cassidy born at the same hospital the same weekend and they were in the same school for preschool) but we have heard more of them for the now preschool set. It's funny to see her head fly around trying to find why she's in trouble. :rotfl: There are a ton of her middle names around here (Cheyenne).

Abigail is also not found around here. When we shortened her name we went with the way a friend from South America spelled her name. Once again, her middle name, KateLynn, is more popular. We did KateLynn for her grandmas but had no idea how popular it would be.

For as big as their schools are there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of duplicate names. I buy the school directories every year to giggle at the different names....makes it easier not to giggle when I meet them in person. Yes, I am a juvenille.

My name is Theresa and I was often the only one and I hate people trying to shorten my name but that's because there was a truly vile Tracy (real name was exactly mine) that I had to see day in and day out for 6 years (she was my babysitter's daughter). :crazy2:

I'm Kathryn but that's an unusual spelling...then you've got all the nicknames too...

Kathryn
Cathryn
Katherine
Catherine
Catharine
Katharine
Kat
Cat
Katy
Caty
Catie
Katie
Kathie
Cathie
Cathy
Kathy
Cath
Kath

:headache:

I know my DD's teacher must be sick of Es. She has my DD who is
Emilia also
2 Emmas
2 Emilys
Eden
Ewan
as well as 2 Morgans. Very confusing!

My middle daughter's middle name is Torin. (I know it's a male name, but no one else does. :rotfl: ) I have never met anyone else with the name.

Well, now you have:) Actually, there was another Torin three years younger than mine at our old school. He was named after Torin Dorn who was a famous UNC football player. My Torin was named after a doctor at UNC, who my ex worked with. We just liked the name; unique but not weird. And it is spelled like it sounds as well. He has been called Tor-een, and it was assumed he was a girl:rotfl: He is a big, masculine looking 14 year old, so that hasn't happened in awhile,LOL.

Anyway, we gave our son the middle name Scott, so if he didn't want a unique name, he could use his middle. He loves his name and so do the girls:scared:
