Teachers: What names are you sick of?

Tylor sounds like he should be a bad guy on He-Man or something. :rotfl:

I think Kaylee is right near the top of disliked names. It just doesn't sound like a "real" name. It sounds like a nickname or something. And I really can't picture an adult woman named Kaylee.

nice thanks. I love it actually. And it IS a real name

I think it is a really pretty name:thumbsup2

I normally go by my middle name of Brian (my first name is the same as my father's, so I ended up with the middle name) and aside from having to occasionally correct someone trying to spell it with a Y (Bryan) it doesn't seem to be much of a problem, nor does it seem to be all that common (although at my last job I shared a cube with another Brian, which initially confused the heck out of the rest of the team.) Oddly enough, these days among people a few years younger than I am, I seem to see a whole bunch of Briannes and Briannas (and occasionally Briennes) for female names, although I'm guessing those names didn't stay in favor for long, since I rarely see many children with those names (either Brian/Bryan or Brianne/Brianna). In fact, my brother has dated two different Briannas now.

As for odd names, I do have a cousin with the given name of Matthew who goes by the name if Tijs (pronounced "Tice"), which is a shortened form for the Dutch spelling of "Mattias". My grandfather (a Dutch immigrant) seems to have a Dutch nickname for every one of his grandchildren. Another cousin of mine has the given name if Michelle, but sometimes goes by Maaike for the same reason.

Brian is a very common name around here. DH has 3 Brian's in his office--out of 20 people. There are quite a few Brian's at the middle school and high school as well--but we live in an area that was settled by Irish Immigrants so that could be why.

I have 4 kids with names that start with Ty- TyShawn, TyAishia, Tywanda, and Tykedrick. Throw in a Kendrick, and Kavorius and Javares (pronounced Kavoris and Javoris) and we're having an interesting year. I'm so used to yelling Ty---- that poor Shikeem's name was changed to TySheem for the first 2 months I had him!

My name is MacKenzie, and I have a friend named Terryn. In second grade I had 3 Micheal's in my class (all spelled the same) and 2 Dakota's (One boy and one girl. One of the P.E. teahers called the boy North Dakota and the girl South Dakota!!)

Well, now you have:) Actually, there was another Torin three years younger than mine at our old school. He was named after Torin Dorn who was a famous UNC football player. My Torin was named after a doctor at UNC, who my ex worked with. We just liked the name; unique but not weird. And it is spelled like it sounds as well. He has been called Tor-een, and it was assumed he was a girl:rotfl: He is a big, masculine looking 14 year old, so that hasn't happened in awhile,LOL.

Anyway, we gave our son the middle name Scott, so if he didn't want a unique name, he could use his middle. He loves his name and so do the girls:scared:

Marsha

Tor-een does not seem like a logical pronunciation, but people are weird. :confused3
Our daughter was born on St. Patrick's Day, so we decided to give her an Irish middle name. We had Torin on a list if she were a boy and it went well with her first name. Several people thought we should have went with Patricia, but Torin is much cooler. :cool2:

On odd spellings, there was a Saira (like Sarah) in my high school. She loved her spelling but had a constant battle. One of her favorite teachers handed her a scholarship at the final award ceremony and her name was spelled "Sara." She was in a class that made a mural and one of the parents paid to have it framed and hung in the cafeteria, her name was spelled "Sarah" on the plaque. And finally her name was spelled wrong on her DIPLOMA. She was really upset about the diploma, did not understand how they messed it up because she had even talked to the teacher in charge of gathering information for graduation. Obviously a lot of people tried to call her "say-rah" or "si-ra" and she had to correct them.

I don't hate them but growing up we always had a multitude of Katherines or some variations on that name, Kimberlys, and Megans for girls and Matthews and Brians for boys. Amazingly I was named Heather in the '80s and never had another Heather in my class until college.

In my one year of teaching I never came across any of those names, but I taught at an alternative private school with a lot of hippie parents so the names were usually a little different. I liked that though! :hippie:

In my son's Kindergarten class there are 3 Jessicas= and the other class has 2 of them and the third class has 1.
So out of about 25 girls there are 6 named Jessica!
When my son is talking about something a girl did and I ask which one he always replies "Probably one of the Jessicas"

The Kaityln's are all in my 6th graders class.
And the Madison's are big in the 3rd grade

(My daughter has an old fashioned one that is starting to get a little popular but she is 11 and only knows one other with her name.
My son's are all pretty much the only ones- But they are not unusually spelled.)

Oh and edit to add of the 3 male babies I have seen born this past year they are ALL named Brody.

I'm a Jessica. In my class of thirty at my elementary school there were four of us- and we were all in the same Girl Scout troop! In my grad program of 12 there were three of us. I have always been known as Jessi, one was known as Jess, and the other one was known as P-file (her last name is Pfile pronounced File). Jess dropped out but there's still P-File and me.

The thing was- I was named after my Great Uncle Jesse. My parents knew it would be popular, but my father is very close to him. Since there is a family sentiment to it, I don't mind.

My main issue is no one can ever spell either name! Everybody spells Jessi Jessie or Jesse. My last name is Berger, so you can guess how that gets spelled. My percussion teacher could never get it right!

My students seem to have issues with my last name. I have one student who is now convinced that I am Ms. Hamburgers. God Bless her, I don't know how many times we have told her that is not my name. The other thing is it seems that it is impossible for them to say "Berger" if there is not ham or cheese in front of it. Instead I am now Ms. Booger. It is obvious that they dont' do it on purpose, but I despair of them ever getting my name right. At least I don't have my friend's last name (Pronounced Reefer, at the high school she went by Ms. R because the kids couldn't handle it!)

So just call me Ms. Hamburgers!

:) I loved Marillion. I think I wore that album out.

My daughter is a "Taylor" and she has complained about the number of Taylors at her school. What can I say? There weren't many girls named Taylor 13 years ago... :confused3

As a teacher, my main complaint isn't the repetition of the names but, as many others have mentioned, the ridiculous spellings of some of the names (ie "Breeanya"). Also the added syllables to a child's name are sometimes a bit crazy ("L'Kathrynn", anyone?). And do not name your child after a dreadful disease even if it is spelled differently (M'Lyria). :sad2:

Oh...one more thing. If you have 2 daughters please don't do this. Don't name one "Mercedes" and the other "Toyota". It's just wrong.

And I promise you...all of these names are real examples of what I have seen in only 5 years of classroom experience!!!

You must not watch General Hospital! :rotfl2:

DD's boyfriend was named Devon, I love that name. Maybe I like it so much because Devon was a GREAT guy, sadly he died a month ago.

They must be from the planet Krypton. Nephews of Jor-El and cousins to Kal-El (Superman).

Names are so funny. We spend hours trying to pick just the right one, but it doesn't always work out. My name is Cara, which drove me insane because when it was time to get a souvie, I would always be with my cousin (Donna) and sis (Amy), so they would get something with their names on it and I was just stuck with something generic. Besides that I couldn't say it right (speech issue) so it would take me forever to get my name across. Not Carol or Karen, Cara and my mother was so particular that it was pronounced just so (Ca-ra not Care-a) and I so didn't care. She has apologized now, but I can't say I have forgiven her quite yet. Heather or Amanda (the other options) would have been so much better...
