Taxi for beer?

We're going down this weekend for a quickie trip - actually DH is going to a conference at CSR next week and I'm tagging along. There will also be another guy from his work going. It's only 4 n / 5 d so flying in carry-ons only and using DME. I managed to stuff a few of the mini bottles of booze in my "quart size baggie" for myself but DH & his buddy would like some beer. Was wondering how reasonable it would be (both time-wise and financially) for them to grab a taxi to get a little beer? Where would you go? The old Hess station (whatever that is called now-a-days)?

It looks like the old Hess station by BoardWalk is the closest. There are a couple of Publix (one near AKL and one really nice one in Celebration). Hess (or whatever they are called) had pretty much okay reasonable prices for beer and wine, don't know about the new place (can't remember the name and I was just there). Personally, since you will be on your own a bit, I would rent a car from Alamo for 24 hours from the Dolphin or the Car Care center. If you can get yourself over to the Dolphin (bus to the Studios and walk or bus to AK and then bus to Dolphin). Or....I think they will pick you up....at least if you are going to the car care center for pick up...not sure about Dolphin. Anyway, you could get an economy pretty cheap for 24 hours with your annual pass or member discount. Then you could visit Publix and also get some food goodies too. They usually have an ABC liquor store nearby too. You could also stock up on some water too.

I'm sure a taxi would be at least $20 round trip (they need to make it worth their while) but I have been reading about lots of people using Uber. Check out the transportation board for many posts regarding Uber.

CSR looks like a beautiful resort. Enjoy your stay.

I despise wasting my Disney time to go grocery shopping so I think a taxi for them to go get a case or whatever they have at the gas station sounds best - any prices will beat DISNEY prices for a beer - even after paying $20 to go get it - they can split the cost too. They can go the first day & then will be set. When we stay DVC we get a grocery delivery & get the beer included. I am not going to fiddle with any "real" food this trip since we're in a standard room without a microwave, fridge or toaster. I am bringing a Brita water bottle, a box of packaged coffee cakes & some coffee with us for the mornings (learned the hard way not to pack a BAG of coffee in a carry-on tho - TSA thinks it may be drugs and will select you for one of their extra special search spectaculars so I bring the Maxwell House pre-filled coffee filters that are sort of like large tea bags). DH may actually have a breakfast included with his conference. Didn't think about Uber - guess that's also an option. I personally plan to spend a fair amount of time at the F&W after my mini booze bottles are empty.

The new gas stations are called Speedway. I haven't yet been in them but their gas prices are as competitive as any I've seen living in the Orlando area.

Have you checked out any of the grocery delivery companies? I don't know if they do alcohol or not though...

Garden Grocer has a $40 minimum and a $14 delivery charge. If there are a few other things you might order to get to the minimum it might be worth it.

LOL....I hate grocery shopping at home....hate it even more when we waste our Disney time grocery shopping, too. The HUGE savings over Disney alcohol and food prices is what keeps me okay with it. DH likes to estimate how much the 12 pack of beer would have cost bottle by bottle at a Disney bar or whatever.

Well, yes, since they will be splitting the cab cost, that would be the better option. Speedway (thank you Southerngirl) should also have some pre-made sandwiches and breakfast items (egg mcmuffin type things). Would you mind posting your experience staying in a non-DVC when you return? It has been so long since I've stayed in nonDVC on property. I am guessing that CSR only has a coffee maker?

For F&W...we ended up purchasing the 8-tab tasting/drinking thing for $62 (including tax). Stopped at all of the kiosks that had big ticket items (the beverage at China knocked my socks off...lobster roll, filet at Canada). And the reserved seating for the concert was a nice touch, along with the limited edition F&W pin. You only get the preferred seating for the concert on the day you select, but you don't have to use your tabs all in the same day. Again, it is only worth it if you get the expensive stuff. I paid out of pocket for the pierogies....I was shocked at how small they are now and was mad I wasted my $$.

On our most recent trip, I packed a 12 pack of cans into my check-in luggage to take to Disney. When we stayed at the Boardwalk, we walked to the Hess station and bought a 12 pack of beer for pretty much your standard convenience store beer price. Another time, we played golf at Disney and if you stay onsite you get a free cab ride to the course. We asked the driver to stop at a convenience store on the way and picked up a 12 pack and stuffed it into my bag.

All of these beat paying $6+ per beer in the Disney resort stores.

we have a suitcase that has a somewhat hard cover and is carry-on size (though we check it in) but you can get it to work with any suitcase. just roll each can up in an article of clothing and pack the suitcase tight so nothing moves. I actually got 11 to fit as i drank one while packing.

I have brought back bottles (6 in one bag) from other states using a similar method without any issues in soft cover suitcases as well. we usually fly southwest and you can check a bag in for free.

i trust cans more in travel due to possible glass breakage and a lot of great craft breweries now package in cans so its perfect.

FWIW, Publix has a nice selection of beer for a grocery store, prices are reasonable too. I've bought from some relatively nearby liquor stores and their prices were jacked up due to proximity to WDW. As a hunch, I'd guess your DH could find a 3rd or 4th person at the conference who might also be willing to split cab costs to stock the room with some goodies.

I've never used the delivery services but having read posts about them here on the Dis, I'm pretty sure they can do alcohol. If you're buying quality beer like micro brews or imports, you can get to the $40 minimum pretty easily--especially with two beer drinkers.

There are a lot of different kinds out there but we have never had anything break with these. I have packed large beer bottles, cans and liquor bottles. Bought them several years ago and they are still in great shape.

Probably cheaper to take an uber to get to a publix. The speedway (the old hess) has a good selection but my hubby loves craft beer so the closest place to get anything close to craft is publix. An uber would probably be under $20 round trip.

I took an Uber this fall in Disney. Definitely was cheaper than a cab.

During a stay at the Beach Club last January (adults only trip) we walked over to the boardwalk with our suitcase (my buddy and I) and bought enough for the weekend and carried it back with our roller suitcases. I'm going in December with a 1 night stay at OKW, and a then 3 nights at BLT. We arrive very early in the day....so my plan is to hit the MK when we arrive, send the family on the bus to OKW when we can check in as everyone will be tired. I'll take a bus to boardwalk resort, hit the Hess express, and then hop a bus to DTD. probably take the boat back to OKW from there. I've got friends coming in the next day for the stay at BLT (in their own room) so I'll be buying for 2 rooms. It may take me some time, but $8 a 6 pack is better than $8 a beer. Might do Uber from OKW instead...we shall see.
