To the OP.
Papertowels? How much can you save on papertowels?

I'm not the OP, but I get the paper towels as well. With three little boys, I go through lots of paper towels, so I take advantage of them at half price!

Is anyone else a bit skeptical of all these huge before Christmas sales? Doesn't it make you wonder how high the markup is on these items when they can have 50 & 40% off sales already?

I was looking at my gifts as I wrapped them and thinking that the original prices on some of them were way more than they were worth, yet I think I'm getting a great deal because of the % off.

What do others think?

Just for the record - I'm not a scrooge or even a pessimist, honestly

Last year we got the whole box of Viva papertowls at 75% off. They're my favorite and it was such a deal. I don't think many people realized they were on sale because they were still in the box and on the top shelf. They were individual, but we bought the whole box. I love getting stuff like that and everything else we use everyday...I could care less what's decorated on it. If I use it, and it's cheap, I buy it. I will probably be checking often and hope they have stuff left. It was already starting to get cleared out yesterday, but I'm also hoping to stock up on decorations for the yard and tree for next year. I hope they put the storage bins on sale too, but from what I remember they either weren't on sale or were all gone. Yesterday there were still tons.

last year they had bread machines for what I thought was 30.00 (1/2 off) when they rang it up it came to 15.00, if I had know I would have bought a few more gifts. But I did'nt feel like fighting the crowds and I got mine so I was happy. And I used it almost everyday.

I'm definitely hitting Target the day after Christmas. We finally found the size/color outdoor lights I've wanted for *years* and dh wants to wait 'til they go 50% off. So I'm going to be good and abide by his wishes (but won't he be sorry if they're gone by then! ). They also have some great Christmas cards and wrap I want to pick up.

Don't know what the mark up is at chain stores, but when I worked for a Hallmark store, the mark up was 50% plus $1.00 on most things, although Hallmark things are pre marked with the approp. price.

When I worked retail our minimum markup was "times 2 plus $2" so something that cost $10 wholesale would go out at $22 retail or more.

Yes, I have the same markdown dates written down from last year too. Just remember that not every Target store follows the exact markdown schedule, some go to 40% instead of 50% on the 26th.

Also, for those that don't know about it, Target normally does a huge toy clearance in January as well. The toys will go from 30 to 50 to 75 to 90% off. Not everything is on sale, but in my local Targets there are usually 3-4 full aisles of clearance items. Some are the not-so-great-sellers, but other items are just older and need to be cleared out. I remember scoring some Lego trains sets for less than $17 (these sold for over $150) and other great deals.

Don't know if it is ok to post here, but if you visit the shopping forums on mycoupons.com there is usually a big thread on the Target markdowns.

Target toys NEVER go on a computer markdown to 90% off. It's usually 15, 30, 50, 75. Everything OTHER than seasonal is maxed out at 75% off. Also, a store never goes only to 40% off on Christmas, it's always 50% off the day after Christmas.

ETA that yes some toys will be marked more than 75% off, but those extra markdowns don't come from corporate and are usually select toys (more than likely an item they have a TON of like those Ekara things last year).

I love to go shopping the day after christmas or even a few days after. NOT that I need any of these things but they are good deals!!
Although, last year I got enough wrapping paper from Target to last me a good 3-5 years!! I think I just may buy a few more rolls this year!

You're not being a Scrooge at all. You are right, some stores obviously play this mark-up game inlcuding Kohls, one of my favorites. They rarely sell anything at its "original" ticket price tag. You have to pay attention to prices to know if you're getting a good deal or not. Luckily my mom and I DO pay attention to prices and know.

I do think a lot of stores discount in order to be able to get their new merchandise out. Last year Target did the Global Market bazaar right after Christmas; Costco usually does furniture. I'm sure it's worth it to them to clear it out and get the new stuff in.

I always thought this about Kohl's myself. There is NO WAY I would pay what they call regular prices. They make it seem like you are getting a deal, but what they call sale price is about the max I would pay for something.

Does Costco have post holiday discounts? We just joined and we love it.

Went to Kaufmann's last year-now owned by Macy's.
They had 10.00 coupons in the paper for 4 hours the day after-no minimum purchase. Used 7 or 8 as most things were on clearance.

No Christmas markdowns excite me until at least 75%-don't need much since we bought too much last year.

I have found prices over the past few weeks to be very good as compared to the past few years. Bargains that I thought were good in October are actually less now. I thing I will wait until Black Friday next year, and buy the majority during macy's 10 off 25 plus half off the markdown sales that they had yesterday.

I have seen the Macy's after Christmas ad and prices are higher than they are now.

My son-in-law had his eye on a digital camera for my DD for Christmas.. Shopped around (both on-line and in the stores) for the best possible price.. Paid $398.. This week the same camera is $238..

The week of Christmas is an excellent time for bargains if you don't mind being out in the crowds..

I usually got out the day after and get Christmas stuff. Some years I hit Crate and Barrel for Christmas stuff-- especially candles. They always have some really gorgeous Christmas pillar candles and the day after they are usually 50% off. Still not cheap but manageable. Then I just pack them away with my Christmas stuff. It's great opening up my Christmas boxes the next year and finding them!

I'm not sure I feel like spending C/B prices this year though, even discounted, so I'll be hitting Target. I won't wait for the deeper discounts because usually there isn't much left by then.

I always buy my kitchen calendar after Christmas, usually at Barnes and Noble. They start discounting calendars on the 26th. I try to go right away so I can get a decent one. If you wait until after the 1st you might get a deeper discount but you bascially choose between furry puppies and some second rate sports team. First thing on the 26th there is still plenty to choose from.

My husband's birthday is actually the 26th and I never buy for him until his birthday-- I hit the sales. Stores like the Gap try to clear out some of their big holiday items. A couple years ago I got a gorgeous leather jacket 50% off. These bargains go fast so it is good to go as early as possible. And the Gap is PACKED on the 26th, between the returns, people spending gift certificates, and bottom feeders like me.

I love shopping the 26th! I always go to Target first. My favorite things to look for are the everyday things like paper towels and Oreos. Just because they are in holiday packaging they mark them down. I even got a bundt pan at Target for 50% off last year because it had Christmas packaging. FUN!

I KNOW I'm a bottom feeder! LOL I hardly ever buy anything unless it's on sale. And the sad thing is, now my 3 year old dd always asks...is that on sale? Even when she's playing "shopping" at home. She comes up to me and says....Hi cashier lady...is this on sale? It cracks me up, but also makes me a little sad that I've apparently ingrained this into her brain! LOL
