Target Breach.

The only card I use at Target is my Red Card Debit Card. Obviously, this card can only be used at Target stores. Is my bank account information stored on the magnetic strip? I'm not really sure if I need to be concerned.

No, but from what I'm understanding, your target debit account number can be cloned and a duplicate card created, and along with the PINs that were stolen too, someone could go to any other target and clean you out purchasing big ticket items.

At the very least, you should change your RedCard PIN. that can be done online or through the smartphone app.

Last night I changed my RedCard debit PIN number but today I called the (605) number and had them reissue me a new card number and deactivate my current RedCard debit card. They said I would get my new card in 7-10 days.

I was afraid of unauthorized charges being made which would be deducted from my checking account and if there were NSF it would pull from my savings account. Don't want to chance that! Now I won't have to watch my bank account like a hawk.

Have they confirmed that PINS were stolen? I'm trying to find updated info but can't.

So is it only the debit cards that are in danger? I have a Visa Red Card.

There are 2 types of Target Red Cards - credit and debit - both only to be used at Target.

There was a Target Visa issued years ago, I used to have one, and you could use it anywhere, just like a regular Visa. It was red with the Target logo and the Visa logo. I don't think they are issuing those anymore, but if you have an old one I guess it could still be active.

HMMM no my "red card" is very new.. so new I have not received a bill yet (but signed up online).
I really thought it was only target.

:offtopic:
Why would someone want a debit card over a charge card.. :confused3
either way this stinks.

So they said in their statement that they will be in contact with those affected and give them free credit monitoring service. How do they know who was affected? Are they giving all 40 million this credit monitoring service?! Or only those who had a breach on their card?

I would definitely like to have the free credit monitoring. How on earth will they know who used their cc? I haven't received an email about it.

I don't think so. I think ANY card used at Target could be affected - even non-target cards.

You're right. Any cards used at Target - so Target credit/debit cards and other credit and debit cards (including Disney visa, etc) are at risk. New reports say pins were compromised, so change your pins if you haven't already.

I also called them last night....took an hour and a half of attempted calks (redial!) and then waiting on hold. I'm glad a cancelled my debit card, am awaiting another also.

Read on the news this morning that law enforcement now thinks it was an overseas breach and whoever did it is selling everyone's information on underground websites to criminals. Great!!

If you got a Red Card it definitely can only be used at Target.

:offtopic: Lots of reasons. Some people don't qualify for the credit card but will qualify for the debit card (I used to work at Target and had this happen to some guests). Some people think a debit card is safer (I think this incident has shown it's not). Some people know they will spend too much with a credit card, but with a debit card they can't spend more than is in their bank account.

Unfortunately, over the years I've had both a credit card and a debit card stolen. When it happened with a credit card, the issuing bank recognized the fraud within 2 days and called me, closed the account, refunded the fraudulent charges, and I had a new card in a week. When it happened to my debit card, it was such a mess! I saw the fraudulent charges on my on-line statement, I had to prove that I didn't make those purchases (I was actually at Disney the weekend the charges were made so that was easy to prove!), and even after that I had to fight with the bank to refund the over draft fees - for withdrawals and purchases that I didn't even make!

I got an e-mail from target last night about this and it says they will be sending out the free credit monitoring information shortly if you were effected.

I haven't shopped at Target since the middle of November (before Black Friday) but Bank of America called and emailed me to tell me they're sending me a new debit card because an undisclosed vendor was having a problem. I've only shopped at Amazon with the card (besides the first week of November with target) so I'm assuming it's because of this target thing!

My bank called me as well and I was also confused because I had not used that card at Target since before Black Friday. They said the breach actually extends as far back as summer because Target did not delete credit card data every 60 days as they're supposed to. So apparently they're not even being honest with the dates they released...

My bank called me. Recommended closing checking acct, especially since linked to savings acct said to protect self in way future. also changed stuff with Target.

Did you use your bank debit or a Target debit?

I have the Red card debit card and used it about 6 times between Black Friday and 12/15. To play it safe, I just called to cancel it and have a new one reissued. I called 866-852-8680, was on hold about 7 minutes (no hold music so you aren't sure you are still connected) and I am all set. I should have a new card in 7-10 days.
