Target Breach.

I have 2 debit accounts with my bank. I transfer money from the main account to the account I shop with and limit that amount. If card stolen or scamed I cancel and my main amount is safe in the account I don't use.

DH used his card once. He has a new one already from Chase. We have celebrated Cmas already and now I have to return gifts. It was on his card. I don't have that card anymore for the stores to swipe to put back on the account. Some of these stores are specialty items that I don't want a store's credit gift card. UGGGGGGG!!!

Target is offering everyone 10% off this weekend. Does anyone know how to print the coupon?

There is no "coupon" -- as of this morning, all check lanes have the appropriate barcode posted to apply the discount...

Surely retailers will see this often after this fiasco and be understanding? Good luck!!

It was a target debit card that I had that my bank said get new checking account. Staff shared they can have your checking account number from the magnetic swipe.

I have the Target Visa with a 10,000 limit. I changed my password but it has no debit feature. I have monthly bills automatically coming out of that acct so I will have to change them as well. What a pain.
I just read the email and it seems that only the debit cards are in jeopardy of being misused.

Sadly, not true that only debit cards are in jeopardy. Any card - credit or debit, Target or another bank - used at Target during those dates is in jeopardy. Debit cards are a little harder (or a lot, depending on your experience) to manage during a fraud investigation, but both types of cards have been compromised.

But yes, I totally agree - what a pain!

Is the redcard debit phone closed on weekends? I have tried calling multiple times and it won't go through. Just says sorry your call cannot be completed at this time

Typical Target customer service. And when you finally do get to speak with someone, you won't be able to understand them.

See my post further up at 11:42 today. I waited about 7 minutes and was helped immediately, and had no trouble understanding the rep who answered the phone. I believe the phone number I listed is open 7 am to 11 pm per the email I received from Target.

Any card used there is at risk but obviously if you used a bank debit card you're at risk of having your checking account emptied.

There was a number posted on this thread yesterday (605 area code I think), I called that last night and was able to get through after about 10 minutes of being on hold. I has tried the 800 number before that for a day and wasn't able to get through.

Good to hear. Your call must not have been routed to a foreign country.

I called my bank Thursday afternoon and they said I was next on the list to get a call from them. Mind you, I use a small local bank, so they can call all their customers personally.

They said I could either lower the limit on my card until I got a new card OR close it right away. The problem with lowering the limit is that during high volume times, which is exactly what this next week will be, the computers that check limits kick off, and they could empty your accoung with one swipe.

My bank also said that this is different because these folks are cutting physical cards...not using them online. They had one customer whose card was used in Florida and Texas at the same exact time. In other words, this ring is massive. They have people all over the US copying and using your card.

I chose to close my card. It's a PITA...the closest branch of my bank is about 75 minutes from me. I had to go to the Credit Union and get cash to cover the week.

I was also advised that these sorts of attacks are getting more frequent and more sophisticated. This is the fourth time that my card info has been released...the first time the bank was worried enough to decide they are closing the ATM/credit cards of everyone who has shopped at Target since Thanksgiving.

I don't use credit...and don't want to get in a fight with the extremists here who somehow believe credit companies care about the good of the American consumer...but I am considering getting a very low limit card that I can use in place of my debit card do at least the thieves can't get into my bank account.

My bank called me. Recommended closing checking acct, especially since linked to savings acct said to protect self in way future. also changed stuff with Target.

I learned that lesson the easy way about 6 years ago. We had just moved. I opened my checking account at a bank that had a branch near my work. I opened savings accounts for my boys at a bank that had a branch in WalMart. (We lived in a very small town...you only had 3 choices if you wanted to bank there.)

The boy's accounts were fine the first year. Then we took a trip to Disney...and my older son took $50 out of his savings for pocket money.

The next month when his statement came, the spelling of his name had been changed. I thought it was odd, but had out-of-town company and didn't think much of it. The next month I got a letter saying he was $950 overdrawn! Seems someone inside the bank had changed his name and attached an ATM card to account. Since that bank serves military posts worldwide, the local police asked them to tell where the card had been used...and they refused! They did put my son's money back into my account...and when I went to close it they got snotty, telling me that it wasn't like it really caused me any problem...since I didn't bank there.

I asked what they meant...they told me that had I banked there, even though the accounts weren't linked, they would have gone into my checking to get the $950.

Lesson learned: never have more than 1 account at an institution!

Am I missing something? Why do all these people closing their checking accounts?
DH and I have the Redcard debit. We also have our regular debit card through our bank. We only use our Redcard debit at Target and yes I used it through the time period they are mentioning.
DH changed our Redcard debit pin number yesterday. So, since the compromised items are customer name, credit or debit card number, and the card’s expiration date and CVV, by changing just the pin number, that should take care of the issue. Since this is only a Target debit card, no one can use it in an ATM to pull money out of my bank account.

So, if someone can explain to me why I need to change my checking account, regular debit card, I would appreciate it.

I guess I can order a new Redcard debit card, but with a new pin, they can't buy anything in the store. Right?

I called 866-852-8680, was on hold about 7 minutes (no hold music so you aren't sure you are still connected) and I am all set.

I called that number & got through after about 10 minutes of waiting (definitely no hold music or other confirmation that anyone would be with me soon, LOL) and helped me change my PIN, went over charges with me, and said my RedCard account was not affected. How he knew if my account was affected or not, I'm not sure ..... but I went over my charges, and they're definitely all mine. :rotfl2:

will keep an eye on things.

I shopped at Target on 12/6 and 12/9 using my Navy Federal "check card". I called today and had them cancel that card and reissue a new one with a new number. I've watched my balances and they were fine. I'll have my new card in the next few days, but DH has his so we can use it if we need to.

Target has been famously cheap with their specialized (non-store worker) labor in recent years.

During the Christmas 2008 season, Target handed pink slips to 600 of their employees working in/around the Minneapolis headquarters. In early 2009, all those jobs disappeared (along with another 400 unfilled jobs), and went to their spanking new campus in...wait for it...India!

I find this peculiar, because to date, Target does not operate any retail stores outside of the 49 States/Canada. I'd be willing to bet most of their staff working in India has never set foot inside a Target store.

And the Bullseye didn't stop, there -- in October of this year, they let another 150 workers loose from their Minneapolis campuses. The official response from Target was "a clear duplication of roles". Wondering if those job duplications happened with the Indian staff?

Though I've been something of a Target "cheerleader" in the past, it is inexcusable for a Fortune 50 company not to have adequate security measures in place during the busiest shopping time of the year. Folks either like or hate Walmart, but it is a known fact their U.S. IT departments (which are based at their Bentonville, Arkansas HQ or in nearby Southwest Missouri) are something of a "gold standard" in big retail, and the liklihood of something of this magnitude ever happening at WM would be a lot smaller.

A possible clearance sale of "Duck Dynasty" merchandise excluded, I see a big 2013 fourth quarter report coming Walmart's way...

This is a GREAT post! I'm no longer a Target cheerleader either!

You shouldn't need to make any changes to your checking account.

As Target maintains your bank information "off-store", the only thing a REDCard (debit card) holder needs to worry about is perhaps, changing the PIN, which can be done online...

Now, if you paid for something at Target using your everyday bank card during that period, I would then work with the bank/credit union for the best course of action (many of the good ones already have a plan of action already in place).
