Talk about BAD service.......

I agree with everyone else who said she(the cashier) should have started bagging the rest of the order when finished ringing it up. I worked as a cashier for Hyvee for a few years and then another local grocery store after that, and I would have gotten a strict talking to if I would have done the same as the cashier in the OP. In fact, if our managers saw us not bagging when we should be, we got cart duty or were in charge of cleaning the rest rooms! :scared1:

But to expect the cashier to do it???? Must be another regional thing. My groceries - I bag them!

It's certainly not the norm over here. My supermarket does ask if you would like someone to help you pack, but at least 9 customers out of 10 say no. The occasion where a pensioner or harassed mum says yes then a packer is called for. There is a big push here to get people to take their own bags to save the environmental cost of using paper or plastic bags. More and more people take their own hessian or fabric bags now.

It really must be a regional thing. The only time I bag my own groceries is if it's the self-check-out lane. It would honestly never occur to me to bag my own at a regular check-out.

I think it was rude for the cashier to not finish checking out the prrevious customer before starting the next one!

I have never had anyone bag my groceries. :confused3 They don't offer it here....maybe at the higher priced stores. Once in a while girl/boy scouts will do it for a fund raiser. But to expect the cashier to do it???? Must be another regional thing. My groceries - I bag them!

So what happens to the next customer's groceries if you are still bagging?
One grocery store I go to has "bag your own" lanes that has two conveyer belts with two areas for people to bag, so the customer bags their own and when their order is done and they are still bagging, the next customer's stuff goes down the second belt so they don't get mixed up.

When I was a cashier many moons ago, I used to bag the customer's groceries before helping the next customer. And this was the cheapest store in town.

How many items did you have left to bag? What does that have to do with anything? It shouldn't matter if there is 5 items or 20 items.
No offence OP,but what was the cashier supposed to do? Um, maybe bag the groceries. :rolleyes1
Just stand there and look stupid? That is what she was doing. ;)
She probably would've gotten yelled at by the next customer in line because she was standing there and not proceeding to the next customer.I have never seen someone yell at a cashier because they didn't immediatly start ringing them up when they weren't done with the first customer yet. :rotfl2: If a customer starts doing that then they have some seriuos issues that need to be addressed,
I don't think it's bad service,I think it's just a person doing their job.Part of her job is also to bag the groceries, not just ring them up and leave them sitting there. :headache: The cashier should have been helping her bag the groceries not standing there with her thumb up her nose.

OP, I don't blame you for contacting them. They cut the number of employees and now have the customer doing the job that the employees used to do. First they make up bag our own groceries because they want to cut cost, then they start intalling self check outs so that not only do we have to bag our groceries but we also have to ring them up also. :headache: Next thing you know, they will have us stocking the shelves also. :sad2:

Maybe it's a regional thing, we never bag our own groceries unless it's at a self check out lane. Wegmans has us spoiled, the cashiers bag the items as they scan them. I do agree that the cashier should have helped you finish bagging before starting the next order.

None of the food stores I go to have a bagger-you bag your own and when the cashier finishes ringing then she/he helps you bag. I would be ticked if they started to ring the next order while I still had things that needed bagging! Sometimes around the holiday like the day before Thanksgiving they will add someone there bagging but I don't like them to bag my groceries and ask them not to, I put them on the belt in order of where I want them in the bags and I put them in the bags according to freezer, fridge, pantry, closet, basement. When someone bags them they just stick things in bags and I get home and have to sort them all out again!

Let me guess...You've never grocery shopped have you?

Interesting ... I never bag my own groceries. It's just something I never think to do.

I bag my own groceries.

Geez, for those of you who have to bag your own groceries, I hope you're paying less for them. The only place we have to bag our own is a Sav a Lot. Does Aldi's do that too? I don't know; we don't go there.

DUH....the cashier is supposed to bag the groceries.:confused3

Then again out Kroger's here are well run and they would never dream of having the customer bag.;)

Most of our food stores do not have baggers either, BUT the cashiers do the bagging. Their job is to ring up the order AND bag it. I can't believe that people think it is ok for the customer to have to put their purchases in the bag, unless your purchasing from a warehouse type store. In our hurry-up world we've started to "help" the employee do their job and now many expect it to be done for them.

Think of it this way, when you go to a department store (take your pick) or heck, even WalMart, do you expect to bag your purchase yourself? Why should you do it at the grocery store.

BTW....I refuse to use the self-checkout lines. I see them as just another way to cut costs and employees. I'm giving them my money to purchase something from them, they can provide me with the service of figuring out how much my purchase costs.

All our grocery stores - all the lanes have the split conveyor belt. 2 people at a time...

Seriously, this concept is odd to me. i worked as a cashier at a 1 lane store and I never bagged, either. That's what those little separation sticks are for.

Not a warehouse store. Just Cub and Rainbow. Like I said, the smaller, family run ones do have baggers if you want them. But I don't use them. Costs more there. It's always been this way...as long as I have been shopping. I honestly would NOT want someone to bag my groceries...that's what I have DH for ;) . he knows the proper way to do it!

I love the self checkout lanes. Get in and get out. Grocery shopping/shopping in general is not my fave. So to get in and not have to wait around for people in front of me is great!

I bag my own groceries.

Even if you bag your own groceries the cashier does not start the next order while you are still bagging. They help you at Acme, Super Fresh & Giant. Bagging is optional in most stores that are not a discount store.

If you go to a discount store like Aldies they still put all your stuff in a cart for you.

I agree. I shop at Cub.. the cashiers never bag the groceries. :confused3

I like bagging my own stuff. That way nothing gets "smushed". :goodvibes

They don't normally have baggers at my usual store either. It's not a discount or warehouse store, just a normal grocery store. They will have them available at busier times (weekends..) but not always. There are 2 conveyor belts after the cashier and you're just expected to start bagging while the cashier rings up the next customer. I worked at the same chain in high school as a cashier and I'd help bag if I wasn't busy, but it wasn't expected.

Typically if I start bagging my own groceries it is because I want them bagged a certain way. Not sure if she thought that or not.

Two stores, not discount, by us are self-bagging, they even have a divider (2 conveyor areas) so they can start the next order while you are bagging.

Our local Krogers does not have baggers in the morning, typically the cashier will bag as she rings.
