Taking food through airport security

Exactly!! They can't even seem to follow the standard policies that are on their own website, plus they make up stuff.

We just flew last week. We carried only 3oz contact solution, so no problem there, but we got yelled at for...are you ready...having all 4 of our 3-1-1 bags in one bin. :confused3

They said we should only put one pair of shoes and one baggie in a bin.

Good gosh, we have flown a total of 15 times since the 3-1-1 thing started and have never been told THAT before. We were just trying to be efficient and not use a ton of bins, as a courtesy to the people behind us. Whatever. When we flew home, we separated everything out, but didn't notice whether anyone else did or not.

I just wish the rules wouldn't change every time we fly. We try very hard to do what they want, but it's like they TRY to find something you're doing wrong. :guilty:

(and I really don't think the "only one person's stuff per bin" is an actual rule. It just was for that one guy on that one date in that one airport. The lack of consistency is abhorrent.)

Yeah, I've run into that before, but I haven't had that problem since I've started solving it with my friend the Sharpie. I print each passenger's name on a baggie, and that seems to calm the rabid dogs in some way. (I also write "MEDICATIONS" on the baggie that contains them.)

The funniest two I've had happen were 1) the "you must have shoes in the bin: shoes in the carryon are verboten ... unless you have more than one pr. of shoes in your carryon, in which case only one of them must be in the bin. :confused3 and 2) I'm going to have to consider confiscating this 3' bungee cord that has PLASTIC end hooks, because you might try to use it to tie up a flight attendant. Um, it's *elastic*?

There's the problem, Airport Security Screeners (with the aid of their supervisors) make up rules to suit themselves rather than learn and follow all the rules and procedures that are promulgated in HQ. Is it any wonder that passengers are forced to do research and the attempt to educate the Airport Security Screeners?

Yes, yes, yes! Exactly!

Sorry OP for getting off topic a little here, but this is so relavant to these posts, as DD14 and I just flew to Orlando a few weeks ago. We each had a 3-1-1 bag and an extra bag with DD's epipens, inhalers, and other medication (all in a quart sized bag). One of the TSA agents stopped me after our things went through and picked up our 3 quart sized bags. He asked whose they were and I said "ours". He had a smirk on his face and said, well, you can only have one bag for both of you. I kind of laughed because I thought he was kidding. He got serious really quick and said, no, I'm not kidding. I was like, what the heck? I said one was mine, was was DD's and the one bag was medications. He told me we could only have one between the two of us including the medications. I said, Um...no...that's not the rule...I know what the procedures are. He got so angry and told me he needed "to walk away" from the situation before he pulled me over for defiance. I stood there, like, yeah, buddy, walk away, I know I'm right. A supervisor came over and asked what the problem was. There were two actually, so I calmly told them and they said, no, you are correct. Really? What was that all about? Grrrrr!

That was about Rico Suave TSA agent thinking he was all that. He was probably the Paul Blart of the TSA. lol

Funny how we haven't heard anymore about the liquid sandwiches and sealed packages.

Fraggle551 - you are most welcome. You'll be fine, but remember, asking for a supervisor tends to be more helpful than "But crashbb said I could do it."

:rotfl:That's so going to be my first excuse though :rolleyes1

The rule on liquid/gel food products (such as peanut butter or yogurt) or liquid/gel toiletries (such as toothpaste, mascara or hair gel) is that if it will not hold its shape without the container it is in, then it counts for the 3-1-1 limit. Whether or not the packaging is original and sealed does NOT matter, according to TSA rules. Semi-soft foods (such as casseroles) that are frozen solid seem to be kind of a grey area; at some airports TSA will let them through, and at some they will not.

Salads and sandwiches can go through with no problems. Spreads on sandwiches or dressing on salads must be pre-applied to their carrier foods before entering the checkpoint area; if they are not already on the main food, and you have a condiment or salad dressing packet that you intend to open later to put on your salad or sandwich while on the plane or while waiting at the gate, then that packet needs to go through security inside your 3-1-1 baggie, but your salad or sandwich does not need to be in the 3-1-1 baggie.

LOL, I was wondering the same thing. But then I'm sure we'd all be surprised by the wacky things people have tried to take on planes. Maybe grandma has to travel 700 miles on Thanksgiving Day to make it to the family dinner, but everyone is DYING for a taste of her famous sweet potato casserole! Grandma does not want to disappoint.

Liquidy sandwich meat, this thread is a hoot!

What if grandma wants to bring cranberry sauce!

And since this thread has turned to liquidy meat, turkey, and Thanksgiving, how about some jello turkey?

Or avocado jello turkey?

Well, what we need now is the Spam lamb from MASH, but I can't seem to find a pic online.

(ps - great tip about writing the names with a Sharpie - I'll try that next time! Also...I've NEVER had anyone say anything about shoes packed in the carry-ons. I never even thought about it! We had 4 pair in ours this time! I guess I could have taken them all out, matched them up with quart baggies, and taken all kinds of liquids on the plane. :lmao: )

So, um... what if I wear my kilt? :rolleyes1

You'll have troubles with Airport Security Screening. Pleats and heavy material interfere with the devices that look under your clothing leading to a feel up. Then again, some like that . . . ;)

Apparently a lot of casseroles and pies fly on the day before Thanksgiving. If you find yourself in the airport, be prepared to duck!

(But seriously, it is really common for people to take homemade food to relatives' for holidays, and most of the time they don't want to trust it to a checked bag.)
