I have read on a few websites of people taking rolls or similar things "to go" at a buffet. At least one even said that a CM told them too. We will be doing our first character buffet in February (Tuskar house). I know it is normally not allowed to take food from a buffet. Is it different at disney? I don't want to take something I'm not supposed to, but if it's allowed, I don't want to miss out on a handy snack for later!

I would think if you're taking a piece of fruit like a banana, apple or orange, that would probably be OK. But if it's something you need to wrap up in a napkin or put into a separate container so that it doesn't get damaged in our pocket or bag (or, alternatively, won't damage/stain something else in there), then that's over the line.

I've never had a CM encourage us to take food from the buffet. As the PP said, you'll sometimes see guests take a piece of fruit with them, but that's about the extent of what I've seen. They do not have left-over containers or anything that you could use to take food with you. So in that way, no, I don't think Disney buffets are any different from traditional buffets.

We have taken whole fruit, cookies, or a roll. We just take a ziploc Baggie with us. .

Personally I think it's in poor taste to take food out from a buffet--is a piece of fruit THAT important?

Agreed. I could see a CM saying "sure, take a roll for the road," but that's about it. They don't pack up leftovers which should be the sign of there not being an option for soft bagging to go snacks.

I can't imagine a CM saying anything against taking something like a roll or piece of fruit but you can't wrap up an entire plate of food to go.

I've had some wonderful chefs bring us a pile of the pre packaged allergy free desserts and told us to take them with us to snack on in the parks.

At HDDR, my daughter wasn't in the mood to eat...go figure...and thus didn't touch any of her dinner.

the chef came out (we had a special dietary meal) and offered to put it into a foam cup to take with us in case she got hungry later in the evening.

Nice of him to offer...we never asked, but i didn't feel at all that i did it in bad taste.

I've taken an ice cream cone out from a buffet once, no one ever said anything.

For most buffets, taking a small dessert out with you usually isn't a problem, just don't take the rest of the salmon from the hot line. :-D

If it's late, they'll probably let you take a little more, as the rest will get thrown away after closing.

I've never taken food from a buffet but last year while dining at Hollywood & Vine on the Fantasmic Dining Package, our server offered us cups of coffee to go without us asking. We weren't even drinking coffee with our meal. It was January and chilly out so the hot beverage was very welcome.

Taking away food that you can eat on your way out; like a desert or fruit, shouldn't be a problem. They might encourage it in a effort to turn the tables over faster. But taking away something as a snack for later; that just seems wrong.

In Disney's own Blank Check movie,
. . . it is recommended to put a plastic baggie in your pocket
. . . fill it with food at the buffet so you can take it with you
. . . the buffet "is all-you-can-eat, but doesn't say all-you-can-eat-HERE"

:cool1:

I believe taking "ziploc Baggies" to fill leaving a buffet is beyond what you have paid for. Just because someone didn't stop you, doesn't make it right

I agree completely. The price of a buffet is all you care to eat there It does not include take outs

A specially prepared allergy meal is going to be thrown out if not consumed. In my mind, this is a totally different circumstance

It is my belief, and my experience, that the price of a buffet includes all you can eat for that meal. It does NOT include all you can eat and then what you choose to take as well

Maybe....really I don't see anything wrong with taking a little snack like a cookie or piece of fruit. You've certainly paid enough.

At the Biergarten I always take my leftover beer to go.

My thinking with a buffet is it's all you care to eat at that meal. If you take a dessert to eat after your meal but you stuff yourself enough that you can't eat it, then take it with you. But if you go in and say "oh, I can get an apple for tomorrow morning!", then well, I personally don't agree with that because it's wasn't ever intended for that meal. Only my opinion.

See you don't know the whole story, I took the 2 cookies for my daughter who was 5 and they were on her plate. She wasn't feeling well because of the heat and she ate them about 30 minutes later once she felt better. They were her dessert which she put on her plate with Mac & cheese and green beans. Which she ate 1/2 of both the Mac & cheese along with the green beans. The roll was also for her at a different meal. I have ziploc's in my bag to place items in so the do not get wet if it rains not for the reason to take food. Also the whole fruit was taken at a breakfast buffet to take meds with at a specific time after we ate.

I didn't fill the ziploc baggie with an enormous amount of food at anytime. Nor was it a whole meal and it wasn't beyond what I paid for.

Opinions are like butt holes everyone has one. I have an opinion there was nothing wrong with what we did and you have the opinion I over stepped a boundary. You and I understand each other now.

I like that.:cheer2:

No need to bring bodily orifices into the discussion - ha! Your original post was limited in facts and definitely implied that you take Ziplocs for the purpose of carrying out food. Your follow-up makes a lot more sense, and I wouldn't feel bad about those circumstances and am guessing the PP would also have a different response.
