Taking food from buffet

Is there anything consructive about this thread? It's devolved into two definite camps: those who would and those who would not. What else is there to say?

We were at Chef Mickey for Breakfast one morning, and my DD's were so excited, lots of pictures and autographs. That they really did not eat that much, which is pretty much expected with the fab 5 around. I guess a server heard me saying to DH we will most likely be getting a snack sooner than later, He ( the server)just said You can grab a piece of fruit for the road, I was like "really?" he was like sure its okay. So we grabbed 1 apple and 1 banana, our DDs had them eaten before we got to Epcot that day, really while waiting in line for the monorail, another time at dinner at Crystal palace one year my DD feel asleep, before getting to dessert, our server was so kind, she wrapped up a couple of cookies for her for when she woke up.

For us our DD's would get out of the restaurant and I would hand them the fruit and they would start eating and talking about the characters. I look at it this way instead of them eating it at the table they ate it on the way to the monorail. But there are lots of trips that we never took anything as we did not need it.

I personally would never take a baggie to put food in off a buffet. When my DD's were little I did keep a baggie for half eaten candy bars, bags of chips, that I knew that in 30 minutes that they would be wanting another snack.:rotfl2:

My DH travels a lot, and a lot of the places that they stay, offer free breakfast, they all have some sort of offering either bagged up or a container for you to drop in a muffin and piece of fruit, and a to go cup of coffee.

The key I think here is don't try to cheat the system, and don't be wasteful.

1) You would be surprised how many folks go for a third plateful. 2) They are full, but "as long as it is on the plate, might as well take it out." 3) So, they load up with no intention of eating it . . . at that sitting. NOTE: People talk about food being thrown away. At Tusker, they throw away eight-to-nine 45-gallon garbage cans of uneaten food per day. At Crystal, they throw away nine-to-eleven 45-gallon cans daily. Once it is on a plate, they cannot save it for other groups (eg. Second Harvest), so they feed earthworms at the dump.

I never even thought people would do that on purpose.

I think there's a difference between a CM offering a piece of fruit or a cookie to take away from the buffet and people loading up Ziploc bags. I think I would literally :rotfl: if I actually saw someone doing that.

This is my opinion too. I guess in the first scenario I imagine one person in the party not being quite done and finishing an apple or cookie as they walk out the door with everyone else. (Yes, I know everyone could wait on that one person, but when it something portable and you want to make rope drop or a FP+ reservation, I don't see the harm)

The only thing I've ever had actually offered to go at buffets was drinks. We've definitely had CMs ask us if we wanted a drink to go or to put in our mugs. We've also had the coffee to go scenario someone else described when it was an early reservation or a cold night.

I've never taken anything to go from the buffet restaurants at WDW because I didn't want to carry it around. However, at DL, when we stay at the BWPPI I've been known to stash one apple and one banana in my purse for a snack later.

I honestly don't think it's black and white. There are shades of grey here. There is a difference between one piece of fruit or one chocolate chip cookie and bringing Tupperwares up the buffet and filling them.

We have had several waiters offer to get us drinks to go when leaving disney buffets. I have never been asked if I'd like to take food to go. If you need something to go for whatever reason, then ask, don't pull out the ziploc. That's tacky for any reason you have! If you think you paid too much to not be allowed to take food for later, then you should not have eaten there in the first place.

A couple of years ago we were at Crystal Palace for breakfast and a table near us had a couple of plates filled with pastries and fruit that the parents were putting into ziploc bags and acting like they were "beating the system." It was pretty sad.

Honestly, I would not have thought they were trying to beat the system. I would have thought they needed some help. I probably would have paid for their meal and paid it forward. I probably would have thought this is their first visit. I am glad my first thought of others is kindness.

I often do this for others, pay for a strangers coffee, lunch, dinner, or whatever. We also pay for our sons friends when they go to the movies or have dinner together.

To address some other things:

I used a Ziploc because I put a counter service chocolate cake in my backpack one time and it was a terrible mess when the container opened and I had to clean up icing, cake, and mickey sprinkles on vacation in a bathroom at Magic Kingdom. Lesson Learned!!

It had nothing to do with theft, stealing, or because we could not afford to buy a snack later. We have always paid for what we buy and use.

Not everyone is out to beat the system, it is sad to focus on the ones that have ruined it for the rest of us and continue to do so. I would like to believe there are more upstanding individuals doing the right thing instead of following the wrong thing.

Thank you to the individuals that were kind on here. It has been nice to see your individual stories and thoughts.

After all everyone has an opinion and should be allowed to voice it, how you choose to voice it, is your right!

Cheers Everyone! Have a marvelous evening!

My sister takes a ziplock with her to Boma. She rationalizes that she is too full to eat her dessert there and she'd rather have it later that evening, just before bed. She usually gets a bowl of tiramisu or bread pudding and "surreptitiously" spoons it into the ziplock in her backpack. It was humiliating to be at the table while she was doing this, and I finally took DD to the ladies room while DSis took what she rationalized was hers to take. Of course, being too full for dessert didn't stop her from noshing on a zebra dome or bite sized pastry while we finished our coffee!

I have to say, if someone is at WDW, I don't think they need financial help. Or if they do, and they have to resort to stuffing food into their pockets in order to eat later, they are mis-managing their money terribly, and more money isn't what will fix their problems.

We don't take food from the buffet with intention of taking it to go. So my answer for that type of question is NO.

We have taken portable bits from food we intended to consume there, but had no room for. As the food would go into the trash, I has no problem taking a muffin or piece of fruit.

If I intend to take something as "to go", I will inquire if I can. But that hasn't really ever happened.

I skip the bag and just stuff zebra domes in my pockets. Kidding! I see nothing wrong with taking a piece of fruit or a cookie. Especially if it is for a child and it was from their plate. If I saw someone doing this I wouldn't say a word. Now, stuffing pies and chicken legs in your purse could get disgusting.

What is so odd or unusual about eating what you want at one meal and then leaving, and then if you (or a family member) is hungry later, buying another meal, or piece of fruit, or cookie or snack when you need it? When did buffets become pantries or larders for future meals? If the price of a buffet is so high that you feel the need to walk away with food for later in order to achieve "value", then don't eat at buffets.

I need a smilie of the Fonz jumping the shark

Not judging others at all. People do all kinds of things I shake my head at

Once at a beef steak Charlie's decades ago, we watched 2 women clean multiple plates of pearl and eat shrimp and put it in their purses:sick:

I have never seen anything to top that one
