Taking Down Holiday Decor

We’ll take down the tree on the 2nd. My husband was hinting that he wanted to do it tomorrow to be able to put it out for garbage day on Tuesday, but he was outvoted.

I started today, but we have a lot of decorations, so it will continue. The cleaning lady is coming on Tuesday, so at least I got all the knick knack stuff put away so she can at least dust. We have 5 trees up, so taking those down will probably be done over the next week or so.

My tree is coming down tomorrow. I would have done it yesterday (or today), but I've been sick. Much quicker that previous years as the tree is pretty dry now (that's all that was on the lot the day we bought it).

Outside lights will stay up until after New Year's (maybe Saturday).

I went to a friend's house years ago on July 4 and there was a fully-decorated Christmas tree standing in the living room. It was totally brown and didn't have a needle left on it. It was about the strangest sight I've ever seen.

When I asked why the tree was still up, she said, "Oh, I just haven't had time to take it down yet so I just sweep up the needles every day." Mind you, she didn't work and had no children, so I'm not sure how she had time to sweep up needles every day but didn't have time to take the decorations.

I'm just glad nothing died in there. I can see it now: "What is that awful smell?" "Oh, the horse died last month and I just haven't had time to drag it out of the living room!"

Lol this reminds me of my grandmother. She would have granddad cut a tree from their land every year. Well after a bunch of years it got hard to find any kind of cedar and the pines were too big. So one year she had what looked more like a big holly bush (not sure holly is a bush but it had red berries and prickly leaves) and another year it was a small magnolia tree.

The year of the magnolia, when Grandma gathered us kids to dye Easter eggs, the tree was still there, fully decorated for Christmas. We laughed and ribbed grandma about it so she said “ok we will just make it a Easter tree” She didn’t remove the Christmas ornaments, just had us cut out pictures of Easter bunnies and eggs and add them.

For Memorial Day we addded flags.

It became our 1972 tree or whatever year it was.

I am sure the tree was pretty dead and dry by the time Granddad took it down.

They were running several businesses so I guess time really was limited. But grandma had a way of deciding what was and wasn’t a priority that went against a lot of “norms”.

I think I would have liked your grandma. :)

Christmas was gone from our house as of 11am this morning. House has been cleaned, decor all away, and "pine" scented wax melts replaced with my favorite clean smelling ones.

My grandmother was born on Christmas Day. She grew up very poor. All of her siblings got gifts on their birthdays and on Christmas. She only received one gift on Christmas like everyone else because there was no money to spare. It made her sad even as an adult that everyone pretty much dismissed her birthday because it was on Christmas. My husband's sister's birthday is December 14th, so their house was never decorated for Christmas until after that. I grew up decorating for Christmas early because my parents liked to have the house decorated for their anniversary on December 1st.

Fortunately, we have no birthdays near Christmas in our family now, so decorations are up early and remain until after Epiphany.

My birthday is Dec. 12th. We always decorated after Thanksgiving. And I always had birthday then Christmas gifts. The two never competed :) My birthday cake has always been decorated with Santa's or some other Christmas scene!! A tradition I still hold to this day!!!

edit : I ALWAYS loved having my birthday in December. I was early and should have been born on Christmas. I have always been disappointed that I wasn't!!

My grandma would literally take out the tree on Christmas evening. But my dad's side of the family always opened all their gifts on Christmas Eve, so they just had a weird timeframe for things.
Though my husband and I bought our first little real tree last year, and set it out on our porch afterwards because our apartment complex wouldn't let us dump them on property. That little tree sat out there all hear til we went and got a new one this November hahaha. We're bad at letting things go apparently.

AAAAAAAAAAAND done!

Much more fun putting it all up.
Yep. Tree is down (although all the decorations boxes haven't made it into the attic yet). I also brought in the two inflatables we have in our outside display (it's supposed to rain in the next couple of days and having to inflate them indoors so they can dry out is a pain). We typically don't run the outside lights after the first of the year, but it takes a few days to get them all down.

Usually I do it today but decided to wait a few days so will do it by the end of the week. I feel like I have worked so much these past 2 weeks and odd shifts and haven’t been able to enjoy it. After tonight , I am off for 4 days and the kids are still off until next week so I am extending our holidays. Due to weather issues last week and a postponed celebration , we are still due for visitors this week.

We got a bit of an unexpected start to taking it down yesterday. DH’s daughter’s family (4 grandkids aged 2 - 13) visited to celebrate New Years. We have a pretty confined space and they’ve actually never all been here at once before. The place looks like a cyclone just blew through. :rotfl2:

Its time to take it all down........

So far the wreaths are off the front and back doors, thats it.
Its a start though.
All the boxes are in the garage waiting for me to fill them.........

Tree is being taken down and all the Christmas stuff will be put away today. Normally I leave all the winter themed stuff up through February but its been so cold and I'm sick of winter already so I think it's going away too.

For those with fake trees how do you store it? We went to a fake tree this year. It is a pre lit tree in three pieces (7 or 8 foot tree). It will never get back in the box it came in. Not sure what to do with it - lol

We just stuck in in the basement intact....my God I get lazier as I get older. LOL

I hate taking down Christmas decorations, there is nothing more depressing. We have 2 fake trees, 2 separate Christmas villages and lots of associated decor. I will take down the outside display so I don't get busted by the HOA, but I'm leaving the inside decorated until my birthday the first week of Feb. January is such a downer month with the cold and the dark and nothing really to look forward to, so I'll just keep a little bit a Christmas cheer.
