South of the Border has done little to no refurbishment. Most people in Dillon County would be glad to see it close--it has become the biggest area in the county for drug and gang involvement. The Schaefer fellow, who started most of it, died several years back. It started going downhill then. It is a shame.

Have you been up 95 recently? Take a look at the South of the Border sign that says, "Your sheep are all counted. . ." and the sheep spins around. Somebody has decided to target practice with that sign. It's funny and not so funny at the same time.

I haven't been there in sometime. But I really hate to hear about its decline. There was a RUMOR a while back that Disney was looking at the property to use as a hotel for travelers from that direction. But if all the Disney rumors came true...Disney really would rule the world!! :lmao:

Pretty good!! getting ready for a WDW trip soon!

think I'll go near the end of sept, or first part of oct.

You'd be there in time for the Food & Wine Fest and MNSSHP. My 2 favorite events of the year.

How are things looking for those of you nearer to the gulf coast? I ran to the gas station this afternoon to top off my tank. The price of gas jumped up 4 cents between yesterday afternoon and this afternoon. I just remember gas flying up after Katrina and thought if I had one tank ready to go, I'd be in good shape.

That being said, my heartfelt prayers are going out to those people on the Gulf Coast.

It hasn't rained here today like we thought (should have gone to Disney.) But it is windy and you can see the dark clouds of the outer bands going through. We expect quite a bit of rain tonight. But we're very lucky to not be in the path of this storm. It's going to be a bad one. :sad2:

That would be cool if Disney bought it. The last time we went it was a little suspect, especially the restaurant we ate at.

Hey Mean Queen. I'm really relieved that ya'll are not in the path of this storm too. My sister has been getting rain off and on. The last I looked it was possibly starting to get an eyewall back. If that happens it will gain some strength. (unfortunately)

Yeah. I remember that rumor. I can't imagine where they would put it--a lot of that empty area around here is farmland. Now they are all trying to get rid of the once tobacco farmland. It's really sad. This area has gone itno bigtime decline. I lived most of my life in the Midlands of SC, but I spent my summers here with my dad's family and always dreamed of living here. When dh announced he wanted to move, I revolted with him. I wanted to stay in Winnsboro. But less than 2 years after we moved here, my parents went to be with the Lord and I can't imagine if I had not moved and had not given my kids the chance to spend every moment available with their grandparents. They have no grandparents left now.

I wish Disney had done it, though. They can have Dillon, Latta, Bishopville, Florence, or Lumberton. Actually, Lumberton would be a good choice, with I74 crossing I95 there in a few short years.

Well, you keep yourself safe. You in particular was who I was worried about. Just because they don't plan on Gustuv coming to you does not mean you won't have tornados and flooding, and who the heck knows will happen! I'm also worried about all of these other storms with Legomom going down.

I thought briefly of free dining this year. Then I thought, "NO deal could make me go to Florida in hurricane season." I'm starting to think I mad ethe right decision.

Yeah--it's really just a tourist trap

Sounds like you made the right decision. We are a family of six. And we very much take care of each other. I see us as an unbroken circle. As your kids grow, you are always a parent. but on the other hand you build friendships like no other. :goodvibes

ya really can't call yourselves "Disney-philes" until you have done at least ONE hurricane while at WDW!!!

hehehehe

I did a tornado in WDW last year, thankyouverymuch. That was close enough for me. (In Feb 07--Lady Lake got hit hard)

That only lasts a few minutes. A hurrican lasts at least a day, maybe more. I got some great shots from our room at the Poly. You couldn't see the GF because of the rain!!

WooHooo!!!

Were the parks pretty empty after the storm passed?

They were pretty empty, but they didn't open until the mid afternoon, if I remember right.

But then again, it was probably only the guests from the hotels, and not a lot of outside guests that quick after the storm! We were slated to fly out the day after the hurricane passed, but knowing the airlines, I called and got a flight two days later. extended our hotel room, no problems.

(I read the small print on the trip insurance. Even though I paid up front, the insurance re-imbursed me for the extra cost!)

And WDW "comped" (reinstated?) the days back that we couldn't visit the parks due to the storm. SO we went and rode our favorite attractions!!

Thanks for reminding us to always read the small print. :thumbsup2

I even did WDW a few weeks after Septemeber 11th. Everyone was afraid to go to the parks because they were high profile targets. But we refused to let anyone stop us from living our lives as normal as possible. Seeing Disney so desolate and empty was something I will always remember. Living here, it's not really a big deal to do something like Disney when a hurricane is on the way. We know we have a few days before we have to take action.

:lmao: :rotfl2: That looks nothing like the cheeseburger I had for dinner. We had a cook out with some friends. Our grill is undercover so the rain didn't spoil it.

We grilled tonight as well. And guess what? My burger didn't look like that either. :rotfl: Thank goodness!!

It does look quite a bit like my cat Goofy. Though Goofy is skinnier, even when smooshed.
