Table Manners....

I don't think I've seen anyone but a small child eat a cupcake (unless it's a teeny cupcake) withOUT a fork,

Ok, this alone explains a lot. I think you are coming from a different place than the overwhelming majority on this board.

I would guess that most here have never seen anyone eat a cupcake with a fork.

Don't misunderstand my statement. I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right, I'm just saying that we all look at things thru the glasses we were brought up with.

Gluttony would be if you're buttering each and every bite of everyone else's bread in addition to your own :upsidedow

No, gluttony would be buttering your finger along with the bread and then licking it off.

Ok, you have just lost me. I supported your stance on breaking the bread, but you are just going WAY over the top. I have never seen anyone eat a cup cake with a fork and a knife.

Now tempted to walk by one of the cupcake shops and photograph the people sitting eating cupcakes off plates, with silverware. Well, you eat it with a fork, you'd cut it with a knife.

Note, this was not really a discussion of etiquette, just that people mostly do eat cupcakes with a fork in my experience.

Everyone knows the proper way to eat a cupcake is to pinch off the bottom half and put it on top of the frosting half. Voila, cupcake sandwich and frosting with every bite. Um duh!

With the start of all these cupcake shows on tv maybe things have changed in the cupcake world.

In my experience usually the only reason you would have cupcakes is because there is for some reason an absence of, or a reason not to provide, plates and silverware.

If I were sitting at a table in a restaurant I wouldn't order a cupcake, I'd order cake. If we are having a cookout in the backyard I probably wouldn't put out place settings, but rather, set out a tray of cupcakes with some napkins.

Just like if I were in a restaurant I probably wouldn't order an ice cream cone, but rather I'd have a dish of ice cream.

Where I'm from I'm just not walking by cafes with hordes of people sitting around eating cupcakes off of china with silverware.

Sorry, I don't have proof that people have ever eaten a cupcake without a place setting.

So, I guess it's never happened.

(Dang, I wish I had 2 pictures of people buttering an entire roll. That would put an end to this thread).

Are you purposefully obtuse or do you do this sortof thing hoping no one else reads the preceeding posts, because it's the second thread you've done it directed at me at and it's kind of ludicrous.

I did not say no one ever ate cupcakes by stuffing them in their faces from a napkin, did I?

I'm sorry. I honestly wasn't trying to make anything personal.

There are 2 ways to eat a cupcake, just like there are 2 ways to butter bread. And I personally don't think either way is right or wrong.

Personally, I find the whole cup cake thing repulsive. Seems now that with the shows on TV, that they are the new "in thing". I mean really, it is a freekin cup cake. Kids have been eating them for years and now all of the sudden they are "in Vogue". Just goes to show that anything marketed the right way will be a success. Who would have thought that taking a food commonly meant for kids would turn into a empire for some. CRAZY. I even hate the word cup cake now.

Continue on with topic at hand, just a side vent. :goodvibes

First we took soup and made Cup O Soup. Then we took cake and made cupcake.

HIDE THE MEAT!!!!!!!

I'm in the middle. While I find it hard to believe that Cornflake doesn't see people eat cupcakes with their hands, I see people eat them with forks all the time. Do you people not have the food network. There is a show called Cupcake wars where the judges eat the cupcakes with forks. I have eaten cupcakes with a fork. Not for any etiquette reason, just for the hell of it. I also eat them by hand. See what you all have done. You've made me somewhat agree with Cornflake. :faint:

My sister served cupcakes at her wedding in lieu of a wedding cake. Not a single person ate with a fork and knife. I've never seen anyone eat a cupcake with a fork or knife, but I'm sure some do (as evidenced by cornflake). And, as BobNC pointed out, there is no right or wrong way to eat them. Whatever makes you happy. Same for things like brownies. No fork and knife for us...we pick it up and bite.

This exactly. I have never, in my LIFE, seen anyone; young, old, male, female, even the most mannerly of uppity people i know, eat a cupcake with a knife and fork. Around here, if you did, you would be mocked. BY EVERYONE. I thought the whole point to a cupcake was you didn't need cutlery, etc - just napkins.

I highly suspect this may be a city mouse vs. country mouse sort of situation.

DING DING DING! We have a winner! :thumbsup2

This is how just about every adult I know, including myself, eats them. :)

Perfectly fine a long as you're discreet. No putting the wrapped pats in your mouth to soften them up faster :rotfl:

Can I sit on the butter? Bet that would work faster then using my hands. :rotfl2:

OK, I cut my cupcakes in half...horizontally.::yes:: Easier to eat that way!

OK, if you put a pat of butter on your own bread plate and butter as you go, the butter has plenty of time to soften up.. just sayin' ;)
