T2i Battery not holding charge

I probably wouldn't bother with the grip while at WDW. It's nice to be able to change orientations easily, but I'm not convinced the added weight it worth it.

Absolutely. My grips have never even made the trip to WDW for this very reason. Glad you brought that up. I be willing to bet that fully 95% of what I shoot at WDW is landscape and I have never needed the extra power while in a park.

I tried this, ... ONCE! Other than to remove and charge the camera battery, my grips stay on the cameras. One day, after 6 days of carrying my equipment, I thought I would go light, one lens, no grip, etc. Within the hour, I was fumbling with the camera, which way to turn it to shoot portrait, how to grip it without the extra space from my fingers, etc. I couldn't wait to get back to the room to put the grip back on!! It felt so uncomfortable, I couldn't stand it. I guess, its just what you get used to!!

I got so used to having one on my T3i that when I got my 70D it was really awkward until I put one on it. Like you said " It`s what you get used to " I guess. Any way I plan on shooting a lot of video this time so I think the extra juice will come in handy.

So three days later, did the Xsi battery go dead?

So far it's still showing fully charged.

Different lens on T2i..... fully charged 1 week later.

Canon lens on old Xsi camera 4 days later....... still fully charged.

I'm so frustrated with this. I need to give it a few more days on the Xsi then I guess maybe try it back on the T2i.

:headache:

That is frustrating.

Did you ever upgrade your firmware? I know it shouldn't matter on something this basic but you never know.

Yep. Very frustrating indeed. :(

Did you ever upgrade your firmware? I know it shouldn't matter on something this basic but you never know.

I haven't yet, because I'm testing one thing at a time in the hopes that when I'm done I can pinpoint the cause. And each test is taking days and days to complete. But yes, updating the firmware is definitely on my list.

I guess it's just the difference in the way people are wired. I'm an engineer. It is the first thing I would have done, short of trying a different battery.

Yeah, I should have thought of that sooner. I guess I just don't know enough about the impact outdated firmware can have, so it never occurred to me.

ETA: I did look around online. I have 1.0.8 and there is an update to 1.0.9. However, it only lists one problem it fixes, and it has to do with a function I don't use. Still, I'll give it a try, but can't do it until I finish what I'm in the middle of testing.

I don't expect this to resolve your issue. It's a minor update and highly unlikely that it resolves your particular issue, however; it is important to note that there are two things in these updates. The ones they tell users about and the ones they don't tell users about (for whatever reason, usually potential liabilities IMHO).

Don't dismiss an update because it appears to only address an issue that you may not think applies to you. Generally speaking, you should always be on the latest firmware release unless there is a clear and present reason not to and again, updates often fix issues that are undocumented.

Your particular issue with this particular lens is absolutely typical of something that would be addressed in an interim firmware update with no fanfare or announcement. Think about it. How many people do you think there are that typically use that lens on that model? A lot less than you might think at first. It was probably never even tested when the camera first shipped.

Like I said, I doubt it will fix it but if it doesn't, my personal opinion is that you're beating your head against the wall. That lens on that camera seems to be the culprit. Short of trying another identical lens on your camera, you're likely to never be able to pin down the problem any more than you already have. It could be that that particular lens is just not completely compatible with your T2i. Could be just a clash of lot numbers or it could be as broad as all of that model lenses with all T2is. Who knows.

One thing's for sure, Canon will never confess if there's an incompatibility. Don't hold it against them. Nikon wouldn't confess either.

I just realized I could be a lot more help here.

I have a T2i and I have the 17-55. I just never use the T2i anymore. I don't remember ever even having that lens on that camera since I bought that lens after I had already replaced the T2i.

I'm going to charge up the T2i fully and put my 17-55 on it and see what it does. If it kills mine, we'll know something. If it doesn't, I'm perfectly willing to ship you my 17-55 for a few days and let you narrow the problem down if you want to.

I'll let you know what I find out in a couple of days. The one thing I know that's different is that my T2i is definitely running 1.0.9. :rotfl:

The person I spoke with at Canon did say they have had this problem on another lens (didn't say which one) but that it hadn't been a problem with this particular lens. So who knows. But yes, I'll update it. I found it online along with instructions so as soon as I'm ready I'll give it a go.

I actually bought that lens before I bought the T2i. I got the lens in March of 2010 and upgraded bodies in October. The part that bugs me is that I have used that lens 90% of the time on that camera ever since then. Only after I sent the lens for internal cleaning did it start to do this.

I really appreciate the offer to send me your copy of the lens to try out. That's an incredibly generous offer. I probably wouldn't want to take a chance on you sending it across the country and back though just to help with my quandary. Still though, very kind of you to offer.

I also appreciate you (and the others continuing to post!) for riding along on my wild goose chase. At this point I want an answer for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is just to solve the mystery!

Very Generous Indeed.

I guess I haven't been on the photography boards in awhile as I just found this thread. I hope things turn around for you Janet. Keeping my fingers crossed. Wish I had the same lens so I could drive across town and let you try it out.

Well, the offer stands if you want it. I'd be happy to do it.

I can't get my arms around how a lens can kill a battery with the power off. I wouldn't think there would be any power to any of the contacts nor any continuity back to the battery from the lens mount when the power switch is in the off position. It just doesn't make any sense, but we all know, that doesn't really matter. :lmao:

I charged my T2i up good last night and I just put the 17-55 on it. I'll let you know how it went in a couple of days. At this point, I'm going to be surprised if it kills it, but you pretty much knew that anyway. I'm starting to agree with an early assessment of yours. If it's FUBAR and it's the lens, it more than likely happened at the repair center.

Once you pin it down and if it is the lens, I'd certainly give them a call and explain what's going on. If they don't seem to want to help, I'd hang up and call back until I got somebody that did. They'll make it good. My experiences with Canon Service have been nothing but good.

I still think it's better if you get a plane ticket and head to DLR for the 14th and 15th October. I have the exact same lens that you can try out as another variable. ;)

Thanks so much Mike. I appreciate the sentiment! :) And the moral support.

I don't get it either. But the person I talked to at Canon did acknowledge there had been a problem like this on another Canon lens. Just not this one.

And thanks again for being a sounding board and for the "stand-in" lens offer.

Unfortunately, it's looking again like it's not really the lens since it's still holding after 6 days on the Xsi. So I'm back to.......... :confused3

I'm back to thinking there's maybe just something haywire in the T2i. I was working on editing some photos from our trip last December and noticed some of the file numbering went haywire. Skipped all over the place. Last summer I had an issue come up where the flash was overexposing photos here and there. Then it stopped. It happened over several uses of the camera that summer. I started a thread here picking people's brains but I never did pin it down. But now it doesn't do that any longer.

I'm about to take the Canon lens back off of the Xsi and try it again on the T2i before giving up.

I have the label from Canon to send it in but since I'm back to not knowing, I'm hesitant to send it off.

I still think it's better if you get a plane ticket and head to DLR for the 14th and 15th October. I have the exact same lens that you can try out as another variable. ;)

Well, to make the test valid, I'd have to try it on my camera for a full week. Are you in? :cool1:
