T2i Battery not holding charge

This camera needs to either go into Canon for service or on eBay. If it were mine, I'd put it on eBay.

I wouldn't list it on Ebay knowing about the problem, and I doubt it would bring enough to matter once I disclose the problem.

And I doubt it's worth paying to have fixed. I'm not sure of the shutter count, but I suspect it's quite high. So even if I "fixed" it, something else would probably happen soon.

I have a hunch I'll end up getting a new body and letting my daughter have this one. But I need to make sure there's not some issue with the lens that would just happen again on another body. I would much rather it be the body than the lens.

Are the batteries that you are using genuine canon batteries?

I have a couple genuine canon and a couple generics. None of them is lasting more than 2-3 days.

Did you ever try it with a different lens? Does it have the latest firmware?

I recharged the battery last night and swapped to a lens without IS. It will take 2-3 days to see if I get the same result.

And I think there is a firmware update I have not done. I'll try that after my lens test. Thanks for the idea! :thumbsup2

Did your battery hold charge?

I've been lurking on this thread. We have a T2i in the family and so far, we've not had any issues with the camera.

Just wondering if this is looming in the future for us. :(

Hi PiO!

The new battery did the same thing. So I've ruled out the battery. Now I've changed to a different lens (one without IS) to see if I can rule the lens out. Unfortunately each step of my test requires a few days.

I was really surprised by the number of reports I found of this online, although not all with the T2i. Unfortunately I haven't found a report yet where they found resolution. :(

That's not good.

But on the plus/expensive side.....might be time to check out a new body. Especially if the 7D MarkII is around the corner and you don't want to ditch your crop lenses just yet. ::yes::

That's why I'm pulling for it being a body problem! I really just recently decided that since my lens collection is geared for a crop body, I would probably get a 70D or 7D.

But here's where I'm at. I'm really hoping for the dang battery to die this time. It's been in since the evening of the 31st. This was the 3rd morning I got up and checked it. This is around the point where it died before. Then this morning? Still fully charged. That's not good. It's not good because this time I swapped to another lens. If it stays charged another couple days, I will have no choice but to blame the lens. My baby. The reason I want to stay with a crop body. The same lens I just spent $230 having internally cleaned at the Canon factory. The same lens that did not drain the battery prior to me sending it to Canon for internal cleaning. The same lens that is no longer in its 30 day warranty post cleaning. That would really stink.

Ouch!

I assume we're talking the 17-55, f/2.8 lens? That's my favourite lens too.
Perhaps you could call them up and see if they can still check it out.

Yeah, that's the one. :(

And I do plan to call them and see if there's anything they will do if it turns out to be the lens, but I'm not optimistic. Unfortunately it's taking forever just to rule various things out and pin down the problem.

Although it did just occur to me that I should dig out the old Xsi and try the lens there for a few days.

If it does turn out to be the lens you might try storing it with the IS switch off and see if that resolves the problem!

Do you mean each time I use it? Or that if I store it for a while with it off that it might somehow break the cycle?

Because if I need to store it off the camera between uses, that's really a dealbreaker for me.

When storing it. If it doesn't drain the battery that would alleviate the problem with the dead battery when not using it long term - Short term uses I think you could live with so long as you have a spare battery or two with you as the charge draw seems to be OK for a day or two. (When I shoot on trips I'll generally suck almost 2 batteries dry over the day so they're both getting charged overnight)

It's still a hassle though...

If this was my zoom lens, or one of my other lenses that I pull out on occasion for a specific task, I would be totally ok with that approach. But I use this in place of a kit lens. It's the one that's on my camera most of the time. So I just don't see myself being happy with that option.

I did charge up a battery for my old Xsi this morning and put this lens on it. Hopefully if nothing else in a few days I'll have a better handle on the issue.

As fun as a new camera would be, it would stink to buy one only to find out it didn't solve this issue.

Not unless you bought a shiny new glass to go with that new sleek body. :rotfl2:

(Especially if it was a EF lens that would help you longer term transition to FF.

Here to help you spend your money. :flower3:)

LOL, I've certainly done my share of helping others spend money through the years, so I probably deserve that. :p

But sheesh. I just bought the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 lens and haven't really even had a chance to try it out yet. Even my 2.8 zoom is for APS-C. I guess I consider myself all-in with a crop sensor.

As much as I'd love to have a full frame, I really don't want to carry around the extra weight of longer glass to get the same field of view.

You bought the 18 - 35?? I'm envious.

I have an unexpected dash to SoCal in October. I'd been kinda eyeing that lens but I was wondering if I was indulging in Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I'm really tempted to get it.
Gonna spend time with Bret walking round the park for a Halloween Party and a full day the next day.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'd love FF but I'm too much of a wimp to carry the extra weight. :)

I knew I wanted to have it for our DL trip this year. And I haven't actually seen it in stock anywhere online. So I figured if I wanted to have one when I go, I needed to order it and just wait it out.

Your visit to the parks with Bret sounds awesome. I bet you'll both come back with some great shots! :thumbsup2

I think even stepping up to a 70D is going to have me fussing about the extra weight. So the more I thought about it, the more I decided I probably should just stick with a crop sensor.

You twisted my arm. :lmao:

:car: I think I better go check it out now and figure out what I want to do.

Told you I was good at doing that. ;)

I had been watching B&H and the date they expected it in stock just kept changing. I got the feeling they were coming in but they were filling orders from people who ordered and were willing to wait. In the end it only took a couple weeks.

In the end it very much reminded me of when I bought my first Tokina 11-16.
