The weekends are normally quite crowded.

You did not indicate whether you tried to get a ressie through Disney or calling the restuarant directly. I have had no luck getting an ADR through Disney but have never had a problem calling the restuarant directly.

We went there on a whim on a Friday afternoon. There was no wait at all.

Are you trying to book through Disney? Call them directly. They release only a small percentage of tables for booking through Disney.

I tried through Disney. I didn't know they took phone reservations. Would they 2 months in advance?

Yes.

Some of the third-party non-park restaurants accept reservations both through Disney and directly. You would not be able to call directly for reservations at a Disney-operated restaurant or any restaurant located inside a theme park.
