We had a bit of magic yesterday morning. My boys had tried several times over our 9 day trip to pull the sword. It seemed like every time we passed near it, they wanted to try. On Friday, we saw a little show where people were picked and a little girl pulled it out. They were amazed that they saw someone do it. Yesterday morning we had a BOG pre park opening ADR and as we went by my oldest ran ahead and tried again. There was no one else around except a CM standing over by the princess M&G entrance. He was able to pull it out! I have never seen him so excited. Thankfully my mom had her camera out already. I don't think he thought for a moment that he would be able to do it because there was no show going on. Gotta love that bit of pixie dust. I think it made his trip!

Yes, there are times like the little show we saw or random times that a CM somewhere can allow someone to pull it out. My youngest then tried after him and wasn't able to, which caused a little pouting on his part but we told him that not everything in life will be equal (like the fact that he had his 7th birthday the day before at WDW because it happened to fall during our trip dates, something his brother isn't likely to ever get!). My oldest had some luck on his side this trip, as he was also chosen to assist during the Lights, Motors, Action stunt show earlier in the trip and got a special pin and certificate. Our birthday boy got several birthday cards with character autographs at our character meals, and Mickey led the whole table in singing him Happy Birthday on his birthday at the Garden Grill. So they both got plenty of pixie dust on our trip!

I've read through disney guide books and it's said that it is allowed to be pulled once a day.

I had no idea you could actually do that. I always wondered why it was somewhat "loose". Now I know why!

They used to do a show with Merlin. When my son was small, he got chosen for the show and pulled it out. He received a certificate and medal after the show! I wish they still did this.

That's pretty awesome! I think a kid would get a huge kick out of that!

I have read a lot of stuff on WDW, but never knew the sword could be removed!

I keep meaning to get a photo of my niece trying to pull it out, but I keep forgetting! I guess we're always on our way somewhere else when we walk by and I remember it! And there are usually a few others taking pics...

It doesn't remove all the way, but it pulls up further. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

My autistic, intellectually challenged son was called up by Merlin when he was 7 years old and pulled the sword out. He got the medal and certificate, as well as being temporarily robed, crowned and paraded as the ruler of the relm. He LOVED it... And then forgot about it the next day.

He is 19 years old now and is intellectually about 8. He started watching "The Sword and the Stone" DVD recently and I showed him the pictures of when he pulled the sword out and now he's obsessed. I keep telling him that only little boys can pull the sword out, but he's insistent on trying again when we're there next month.

I happened to record one of the full Merlin shows just a few weeks before they cancelled them.
It can be seen at the links below.

"Sword in the Stone Ceremony," in two parts:

It's cancelled at Disneyland? For good? We are going in the fall and I was hoping to see if my little boy could get a chance :(

One of my favorite memory maker/photo pass shots is of my daughter and I attempting on an EMH morning.

Hang on to those...there won't be any more as of April 2nd.

I don't know about Disneyland.
The Merlin show that I posted has been gone from Magic Kingdom at WDW for many years.

But, the Sword is still sitting there (stuck in the stone) in front of the Carousel.
It can be tugged-at by prospective "Rulers of the Realm" all day long. (With varying results.)

There can also be a different "ceremony" held at the Sword, performed by the Royal Majesty Makers, who also perform elsewhere at Fantasyland throughout much of the daytime hours.

Back when there were Characters appearing during PM EMH at Magic Kingdom, they would do a "show" with the Sword.

It was too cool!:)

Which side of the carousel is it on? In all our trips I have never seen it! Is it on the side where stroller parking is...because that would maybe explain how we've missed it...there's always a sea of strollers there
