Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Not to trivialize this, but I'm wondering if we'll see lower crowd levels?? We leave at the end of May.

I would think they would be lower than they would have been.

However...and I hope some of the DISers in the affected areas can comment on this...When your schools close, are you tempted to head to Disney World? Assuming, of course, that you are not sick or exposed...would you guys use the week off school to take a quick trip?

Here is my big question ~

Every leader has now said "Now is not the time to panic"

OKAY ~ so when is a good time to panic :rotfl2:

So when the president comes on tv for a news conference and he is wearing a hazmat suit, can we like panic then? :rotfl2:

(I am not panic stricken as my leaders are telling me NOW is not the time to panic :rotfl2: but I am making fun of the same sentences coming out of all of their mouths)

SOOOO would at least ONE leader let us know when we can go ahead and panic, please :lmao:
Is there a guide book or checklist for us to know when its OKAY to panic? :rotfl2:

That is considered person to person. People are overreacting in fear. If the flu was that easily transmitted, the whole nation would have it right now.

well that is good to know. I was thinking about those times the bus is standing room only, or the crowd in the haunted mansion is merging down to a single line, or people are cueing at toy story mania in the morning, or sitting on the floor in playhouse disney, or sitting in stitch, or the crowd cueing at opening outside the train station, etc. It is so good to know that you can't catch the flu by breathing what someone sneezes in those sorts of typical disney situations. Thanks for the info.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
Didn't you know you can only catch the flu if the CDC comes to your house like the tooth fairy and sprinkles little flu dust upon your head and calls you a CONFIRMED case?
Didn't you get that memo?

Orlando paper now reporting students in a Marching Band from SC which visited WDW a few days ago are being tested after symptoms developed.

That is our local high school and it is closed today for 17 possible cases. 70 kids from the marching band went to WDW on a school trip, and 17 came down with flu symptoms.

They have a little video of one of the kids from another school (Newberry School in SC) that came down with it and he says he is feeling fine now after taking the Tamiflu, but says he felt awful for a few days.

Its scary....but good to know that people are recovering from it.

I was impressed by the House Hearing today...everyone does seem remarkbly calm. They all say that they have no "real" answers to any of the questions...they do seem to be looking into it all and taking a "better safe than sorry" approach. Which sounds good to me!! :)

If we follow their lead, we should all be in good shape! :thumbsup2

I live in Easley, and know someone in Greenville area who went to Tampa and came back with the flu. It wasn't the swine flu, just the regular kind. Makes me feel a little better (i think). I just talked to my pediatrician who told me to go ahead with my trip, just to was our hands frequently. So I am off to Disney on Saturday.:goodvibes

No - you'll just not have a lot of people around you in lines!:rotfl:

Just cover your sneezes and blow your nose and try not to look feverish.

My DD is going tomorrow to DW for her free birthday - I'm really not too happy about her going. Ever since having cancer treatments I seem to catch everything that comes around - I never used to be that way. I don't think I'll die from swine flu - but I'd rather not get it or any type of flu. Every trip I've taken in the last 4 years - I get sick toward the end or when I come home. And we just got back from a cruise early this month and I've had my "spring" sickness. So I've just asked her to be very conscious about washing her hands and using alcohol gel as much as possible during the day.

I keep reading that the toddler that died was already sick and came to the US for treatment, but today I read this:

McALLEN, TX (AP) - A Mexico City toddler who became the first swine-flu death on U.S. soil spent a day with his family shopping at a huge Houston indoor mall the day before he began to show symptoms.

Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos says the Brownsville family with whom the toddler was staying said they spent three nights in Houston just before he fell ill.

Hospital and health officials said Wednesday that the 23-month old Mexico City boy arrived in Brownsville on April 4 and was hospitalized four days later. They said he had no outside contact once he was hospitalized. The family has shown no symptoms.

Just wanted to let everyone know--if you are still planning on coming down, stock up on your supplies before you leave home. Our local drugstores (10 miles from WDW) are entirely out of masks and Purell. A few small bottles of store brand sanitizer. We were in Walgreens picking up a prescription, and from what we heard supplies are out all over the area. The Walgreens was slammed too. No idea what the prescriptions were, but the pharmacy line was wrapped around the store and they were backed up by over two hours.

Stay safe and healthy!

Well 4 days is still within the incubation period, so it is possible that he was infected prior to arriving, but was not symptomatic until he was in the USA. But pointing fingers as to where he got it and where he didn't is sort of useless at this point.

there is talk more schools in texas are about to be closing its doors for 7-10 days. wonder how many families who are affected by school closings will be flooding disney next week? betting attendance will be higher than it normally would be.
reasoning is: how many parents can afford just to "be home" with kids because school is closed? betting a lot will be taking off of work and taking mini vacations during that time.
just my thoughts.

:lmao: Unsure if this is meant to be funny, but it sure did make me laugh out loud.

So good to here! I'm hoping the Mauldin High kids just have a regular cold and they are just taking the necessary precautions. I was glad SC was off the list, but to be on it now.....:scared1:

All that I was saying was that you can catch the flu by breathing what someone sneezes. If their "droplets" land in your nose, you can catch it. What I'm saying is that just because you're in the area where someone has been, you're not going to catch it unless they sneeze or cough on you or you are close enough that when they speak, they're, your breathing in their germs. If someone sneezes, and covers their mouth with their hand, than touch a handrail, and then you go along later and touch the same place and put your hands to your mouth or nose or eyes, than there is a chance that you could catch the virus. This is why it is important to wash your hands frequently, and avoid putting your hands by your face. What I'm saying is, Use caution and proper hygiene but don't panic.

No, no, no! They need to stay home! ARGH!

We were supposed to leave tomorrow but DH called from work around 11am and said he would be home by 2pm and we could leave TODAY!

:cool1:

Someone earlier mentioned about the workers at WDW. That really is a good point, here we all are wondering if we should take 7 days or so to spend in WDW, and there are people there who have to be there 8+ hours per day. Even if they have time to take off, they can't ALL take off at once.

Once I thought about that it really puts things into perspective. We have not heard of hundreds of CM's coming down with the flu, when they are the ones inside with all sorts of different visitors everyday!
