Here is a fact I read yesterday: This flu strain is acting like typical seasonal flu. It is not infecting more people than you would see infected by one sick person with seasonal flu. The normal statistic is a person with seasonal flu would infect 1 out of 5 family members in close contact. This is the same numbers that the CDC is seeing with this flu. It's not as if just because you come in contact with a person who has this strain, you would automatically become infected and come down with it. Just food for thought.

I don't think this is completely true, I think what they mean is that 1 out of 5 would become symptomatic but they are still saying you can have it, be a carrier, transmit it to others and not be symtomatic. The HS boy in Schertz, TX had a family of 4. 3 of the 4 had it and only 2 of the 4 were symptomatic. They are saying some of the family members who tested positive never felt ill at all.

I am not caught up yet...

But I just wanted to let you know that Purell is flammable...so if you spray us with Purell we are all going to go up in flames! :)

Listen, we are all going to die someday anyway so I have decided to go out like a daredevil, in a ball of flames and taking you all with me.:rotfl:

And that...is very disturbing.

If I was in charge I would wait until LATE Friday afternoon to release any + test in Florida

I am so glad! I have been laughing my head off!!! :)

Uh...I think someone said 48 hours for an incubation time. If he sorta keeps his distance and washes his hands a lot, he should be fine. :confused3

:scared1: Let us know how THAT turns out. I bet they let you homeschool for a little bit. :confused3 And your poor DH. Those masks are so hot. :sad2:

:rolleyes1

I think the 48 hours is how long you are infected (and contagious) before you show symptoms but the incubation period is still unknown. I have seen estimates all the way up to 5 days.
I would keep my child away from anyone who has been to Mexico for at least 5 days to be sure.

Woman's 'Flu-Like Symptoms' Diverts Plane To Logan

BOSTON -- A Washington, D.C.-bound flight from Europe was diverted to Boston on Friday after a passenger on board complained of flu-like symptoms.

Airport spokesman Phil Orlandella said the plane was diverted after a 53-year-old female passenger told flight attendants about her symptoms.

The flight, United Flight 903 from Munich, was isolated when it arrived at Logan Airport on Friday. It was diverted to Boston en route to Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Orlandella said the flight had 245 passengers and six crew members aboard.

The plane was expected to continue on to its original destination of Washington.

She probably just has seasonal allergies.

Also, I wanted to let you know their "official" reasoning for closing our schools for 10 days and where the oftn mentioned 10 day closures come from:

they want it to span 2 incubation periods

Also, FYI here is the headline article in our local paper today:
2 swine flu cases confirmed

By Chris Cobb
The Herald-Zeitung
Published May 1, 2009

The first two confirmed cases of swine flu in Comal County were reported on Thursday.

County Health Authority Dr. Dorothy Overman said two students — one at New Braunfels High School and another at Freiheit Elementary — became the first local residents to be diagnosed officially with the potentially fatal virus.

Another two highly probable cases have been sent to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation, and more than 100 possible cases collected in Comal County still are being tested for the disease, Overman said during a Thursday news conference at the New Braunfels Civic Convention Center.

The first concrete evidence of the virus’ spread into the county comes two days after public and private school officials ordered a shutdown of every school campus until May 11, and Overman recommended that all citizens avoid public gatherings to reduce the risk of exposure to the rapidly spreading new viral strain.

County Judge Danny Scheel took the news as vindication for what some believe was the county’s drastic recommendations and prevention measures, and proof that those treating the spread of the disease lightly should take caution.

“I would have agreed with them three days ago,” Scheel said. “But after I watched the indicators that we’ve had in the last 48 hours, I’m fully in agreement that we’ve done the right thing and that the rest of the state is moving forward to do the right thing.”

The number of CDC-confirmed swine flu cases in the United States has more than doubled since Monday. Eight of those cases have been in neighboring Guadalupe County. Over that same span, Comal County has jumped from zero reported possible cases to 107 samples of Type A influenza that are currently being tested for signs of swine flu.

The two confirmed local cases and the two highly probable samples all came from Comal County students, Overman said, adding that students are often more at risk because of their environment.

“Schools always have been known to be reservoirs of infection,” Overman said.

But despite orders from health, school and county officials to avoid public gatherings, students were meeting in large numbers Wednesday at local movie theaters and some local events were going to continue as planned this weekend.

“It’s not perfect,” New Braunfels Independent School District Superintendent Mike Smith said. “People are meeting at Wal-Mart, they’re going to the movies. ... Last time I checked it was a free country.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a statewide disaster declaration Wednesday in response to the outbreak.

County officials were unclear as to whether that would give the county judge expanded authority or the power to issue an outright legal ban on public gatherings.

“I don’t want to go overboard,” Scheel said earlier in the day. “I don’t want to do anything if I don’t have to.”

Scheel said he hoped parents would be “interested enough in their children” to keep them from being potentially exposed to the disease and that event organizers would work to avoid large gatherings.

I was hoping in light of all the recent news of it being a much less lethal strain than they originally anticiptaed, that they would open our schools early!!! Doesn't look that way!

My feed just went away...

If the birds and pigs unite to create a flu, would we call it the flying pig flu? :rotfl:
