Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

That does it. . . .

I'm going to go live with Al Gore in his cave. We will live a peaceful, carbon-free existence and eat nuts and wild berries......in our geothermal heated cave........in Iceland.............far, far away.

Brook - I share your sense of humor about the overreactions. We had a girl this morning who threw up at my school. She was taken out by the school nurse in a wheelchair!! :rotfl2:

I don't think there's any prediciting how severe an outbreak would have to be to close the parks. I can't imagine the FL govt forcing park closures for a single confirmed case of a non-lethal, relatively mild flu. At this point, the swine flu in the US sounds a lot less severe than the stomach virus that was fodder for countless posts through this past winter.

The Florida plan has a severity index like they do with hurricanes. In that plan if the severity index was above a 3, they would consider or recommend closing the parks. That would be an estimated 900,000 U.S. deaths from this flu based on 2006 population data. They don't know how many deaths there will be, but from the data so far, they don't think it will be nowhere near as bad as the 1918 flu which I believe killed 500,000 people in the U.S. If the severity index was 3 or below they would "generally" not recommend shutting down the parks.

Now they are all standing around watching this plane saying
"Now what?! Do we just torch the whole thing?!"

Now Brook that is not how we operate here in Massachusetts. We would never torch the plane. We would send it back up in the air and have the fighter jets come shoot it out of the sky!

I am NOT belittling the flu ~ but I am surprised the medics didn't show up in chem gear to take the guy off the plane ~ I mean they were wearing floatation devices ~ that's some serious buggers that person is tossing around :lmao:

I just figured ya'll would dump a bunch of tea bags off of the wing of the plane and say "Our jobs done here" :rotfl2::rotfl2:

As long as you have Al you have internet :goodvibes

You mean the plane wasn't shot down in mid-air to prevent the plague from reaching our borders. :lmao: Sorry, that may have gone too far. I was just kind of relating to the "Outbreak" comment from oh 20 or 30 pages ago.

Sorry - didn't mean to imply that you were. Just thought it ironic that this same time last week the janitor would have thrown down some of that stinky throw-up dust and the student would have been sent right back to class. Timing is everything!

They are all standing around talking

Bob: so joe what do we do now?
Joe: look busy we are on CNN
Bob: well then stop scratching your butt
Joe: I thing I got some of that flu on me
Bob: quick look important those dorks with life vest are coming up to us

It is absolutely NOT wrong information to state that the theme parks will close if the pandemic alert level goes to 6 and there is a confirmed case in Orange or Osceola County.

Here's the PDF link to the plan itself:

http://www.doh.state.fl.us/rw_Bulletins/flpanfluv104final.pdf

The relevant portion is on page 15 of the document/page 20 of the PDF file, Table 9: Interventions By Pandemic Sub-Phase. I can't get the table to properly copy here, but it's right there in black and white on the pandemic plan.

The length of closing, according to the plan, is however long the pandemic lasts. Once we reach phase 6D, recovery, then the parks will reopen.

I don't believe that the plan was created by people without an understanding of the pandemic threat levels. The fact is that the pandemic threat level does not generally affect us, on a personal level, since the flu virus is already here. However, it does affect the reactions of authorities on the state and local levels, whose job it is to contain the spread to the extent possible. Therefore, with a level 6 pandemic, it falls to those authorities to institute measures that the public does not necessarily like, including social distancing measures.

I'm sorry if you feel that sharing legitimate information is inciting a panic. I think that if it was me, planning a long-awaited and expensive vacation in another state, I would want to be informed of the possibility that my trip may be involuntarily canceled. Maybe that just makes me a fear monger or something :confused3

Now, I'm not in ANY way saying that this is GOING to happen. All I am doing is giving the information that according to the official plan, confirmed by news media in the local area, it is a possibility.
Oh don't even bother justifying what you posted..there are certain people here that just don't want to hear it.. provide sources for your info, and they still insist you're wrong..There is always the "ignore" button you know...My ignore list had an influx of names and I'm quite sure I've ended up on a few lists myself.:lmao:;)

I thought your post was helpful..:thumbsup2

Dorks with life vest: I left my hand sanitizer back in Germany and they're all sold out in the airport gift shop. Is it possible that I could borrow some?

I didn't think you did. I just add that general warning every once in a while just in case someone comes in and yells at me for making fun of such a serious time.

The problem with this interpretation is that it's assuming GLOBAL severity at that level. LOCAL severity, which by the way is NOT determined by number of deaths only by ease of transmission, is entirely a different thing. Leave the current virus out of it for a moment. Hypothetically speaking, pretend that as-yet unknown supervirus X suddenly appeared, and met the WHO criteria for Level 6 pandemic, but caused ZERO deaths around the world. Now, in this hypothetical case, Orlando is the equivalent of the current outbreak's Mexico City. It's ground zero. People are catching it right and left. For some reason, though, there are NO other cases in the United States (the WHO pandemic level 6 is based on non-US data). That would certainly equal a LOCAL severity of 5, and the parks would unequivocally close.

Depending on how things go with this virus, a local severity of 4 or 5 in the Disney area is not an unrealistic possibility. Will it happen? I dunno. You don't know. The FL Dept of Health doesn't know. But it MIGHT. And if it does, then the parks will close.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: but they don't speak English so now they have a bottle of hair gel they are rubbing all over themselves
and smiling KNOWING they are doing the right thing :lmao:

There are volcanos in Iceland, you know. And make sure you wash those wild berries before you eat them.:)

Still watching this live feed here ~ they are all just standing around ... I am sure those with connecting flights are NOT happy

Does anyone know if people are wearing masks on planes?

My DH travels like once every 2 yrs and just found out he has to go to TX in 2wks for two days. He's flying in to Dallas. Of all times and places for crying out loud!!!

I'm not overly concerned about this in general but that does make me a little nervous!

We just flew in from Mexico last night (seriously) and no one on either of our flights had on masks. There were people in customs in Houston that had them on but that was about it.

We were in San Jose del Cabo and we only saw one person there with a mask on. They are requiring my DH has to wear a mask for 7 days at work though. And my kids school is flipping out and trying to decide if they can come back. BTW, the kids didnt go on the trip and we were temp'ed and questioned at the airport.
