Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

You can't believe the hysteria? :rotfl2::rotfl2:
I can't believe the amount of people who post to a thread without reading it :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
there is NOT ONE person on here that is panic stricken :rotfl2: You know why? Our leaders told us "Now is not the time to panic"
So we are all sitting here waiting to be told when the proper time to panic is :rotfl2:
Seriously ~ you need to read the thread completely before you post. :lmao:

87 pages worth of reading ? heck no.:rotfl2:I coughed at the store yesterday..I have bad seasonal allergies, I got the stinkeye from about 50 people , people moved away immediately, and I was waiting for the men in hazmat suits to tackle me:rotfl2:

Though this is a thread about the flu ~ it has been a lot of humor and joking around. There is no grand debate or fight here people ~ the only ones who freak out are the ones who make grand old post about how they can't believe we are all panic stricken over the flu :rotfl2:
It tends to look foolish and obvious they haven't read the last 20 pages or so of the thread :rotfl2:

So here is a quick recap ~
We are all wanting everyone to cancel their trips to Disney so we can have an empty park
We all agree catching the flu with Val Kilmer would have its advantages
and I fell off the potty and broke my a$$
yup thats the quick recap :rotfl2:

Maybe the OP can change the title of the thread?!?!?! That way every 3 pages we won't get one of these I can't believe the hysteria kind of posts ... but I must admit this is a great test on how people surf the DIS LOL

I sure hope so! :goodvibes
Mine (DD4 at the time) had it a few weeks ago, for regular old flu (type B, I think).
She seems to have had no ill effects, and I think the tamiflu helped all of us (MD put the whole family on it when she tested positive.)
The only problem we had was finding the Tamiflu oral suspension that she was prescribed. It took the 3rd pharmacy we tried calling around on our behalf to locate it.

I am glad your daughter is fine. My fear is not getting the flu, it is how do they test you. If it is to shove a qtip up into your sinuses, I have a huge problem with that. Can you tell me how they testing your daughter?

Thanks

When the black plague hit Europe millions died. People where so scared they started looking for someone to blame, strangers anyone who was the slightest bit different and the jews all came under attack. Many jewish families perished for this stupidity, why do I bring it up in a thread on swine flu? The hysteria that the totally irresponsible reporting by the tabloid media to frighten people could cause the same thing to happen again. As a species we have overcome many more dangerous diseases than this one, if we where so weak we would have become extinct from all the plagues that have gone through the planet. We must pull back from the hysteria that the media wants us to be in, listen carefully to what the trained people are saying not some hack reporter whose only knowledge of medical information is what they have got from google. Be careful but don't let fear stop you from living we have survived worse and we will survive this.

Exactly. Everyone this is headed down this month have a blast!!! :goodvibes

Heeeey!!! I feel slighted! No mention of my planning to wear the Pork Council's prototype meat helmet? Man.....where's the love? :rotfl:

This link is dead. I'm not sure what it said, but the new report on the theme parks really didn't say anything different than we already know.

Just an update for my region, we have at least 4 "suspected" cases going through testing right now. Closest to me is about 20 miles, but the person in question was in Mexico recently...which I figured.

Right now I am not more worried about getting sick during our May trip (swine flu, stomach virus, strep, etc....anything) than I am whenever we go to WDW. I can only imagine how many germs can be picked up at WDW at any time, flu pandemic or not. Once my oldest two kids got a stomach virus at WDW but our other two trips with kids no one got sick. We are careful to wash hands often and I don't let my kids lick railings and such, but there is always a chance to catch something when you are around other people and touching things a lot of other people have touched.

People pick up nasty viruses at WDW sometimes, just like they do at school, the grocery store, etc. This is nothing new and right now this swine flu strain actually sounds less worrisome to me than your run of the mill flu season. I realize the current strain could get worse, and this is a new strain with no vaccine, so I am paying attention and not blowing it off, but for the moment it will not cause us to cancel our trip. I don't judge anyone who does cancel, though. It is a personal decision and people should do what feels right for them. I am actually more worried about our November trip when swine flu could return as a more dangerous strain.

For what its worth, I still had the page up before they took it down so here is a copy and paste of this dummy ~ I swear these leaders do NOT have a clue :rotfl:
First of a level 6 HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH US. A level 6 means is has spread to another region in the world. A level 5 when you live in the region is the highest level :rotfl2:
a level 6 to us doesn't mean squat :rotfl2:

And again here we go with the "No confirmed cases in Florida" crap :rotfl2: OF COURSE NOT YOU DOOFUS ~ you never sent the samples to the CDC to get confirmed :rotfl2: well... until a reporter called you on it the other day :rotfl2:

Theme parks, state brace for CDC test results on 3 possible swine-flu cases

May 1, 2009

As Florida health officials anxiously awaited test results on three potential swine-flu cases — including one from Orange County — there was continued attention on the area's theme parks as a potential hot spot for the deadly virus.

Lab workers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday were testing samples from Orange, Lee and Broward counties that were sent by the state after preliminary tests showed they contain a protein associated with swine flu.

Dr. Kevin Sherin, director of the Orange County Health Department, said Gov. Charlie Crist's top health officials urged him to upgrade the Orange County Emergency Operation Center to Level 2 — or partial activation. This means emergency responders are available and prepared should the need arise.

"It's not ... a panic," Sherin said at a news conference Thursday morning at Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty's office. "It is a threat, and we need to prepare."

There are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Florida.

Florida Surgeon General Dr. Ana M. Viamonte Ros said state health officials were expecting results on the Florida cases by today. It takes up to 48 hours to confirm a positive sample of swine flu. Lab tests at the CDC are the only ones in the United States capable of confirming the deadly swine-flu virus.

One of the samples sent for testing was from an Orlando patient who had visited Walt Disney World earlier this week. He had also either traveled to Mexico — considered the epicenter of the virus — or had close contact with someone from that country. This met the criteria Health Department officials established for high-risk patients.

S.C. school shut down after Disney trip
On Thursday, students in a South Carolina high-school marching band were being tested for swine flu after showing influenzalike symptoms after a trip to Disney World. Officials with Greenville County Schools said they shut down Mauldin High on Thursday and disinfected the building while waiting on lab results from swabs taken from the 18 students. The students began showing signs of the flu Monday, shortly after returning from Festival Disney, a four-day event for student bands.

Representatives from Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and the University of Central Florida, Valencia Community College and Orange County Public Schools met with other top business, health and public-safety officials for about 45 minutes Thursday morning for a swine-flu briefing and strategy session.

Disney 'monitoring' events
At the session — closed to the media except for a few minutes for photo and video opportunities — mobilization plans were discussed, but no specific information flowed from the theme parks, one attendee said.

Walt Disney World spokesman Mike Griffin was peppered with questions afterward about how the parks were handling general precautions and didn't go into specifics.

But he said that Disney was "monitoring" the situation surrounding the South Carolina students. "That's all we can say at this point."

A Disney official later said the company continues to employ "rigorous" cleaning standards, including, among other things, monitoring bathrooms closely and sanitizing restaurant tables after each guest. "We are working closely with public-health officials and will continue to rely on their guidance and adjust our operations as needed," spokeswoman Kim Prunty said.

Sherin said some of Orlando's theme-park-area hotels are equipped to hand out special masks to sick visitors who request them, and each has sanitizing and cleanup plans in place to deal with the swine-flu virus, he said after the meeting with business leaders convened by Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty.

Crotty: 'We are prepared' for anything
Sherin said he's comfortable with how Orlando's major theme parks and hotels were handling the situation, but he plans to send more masks and more basic swine-flu information to some smaller tourist hotels and attractions, which may not have plans in place.

Sherin also noted that about 35,000 people die each year from seasonal influenza, which hits the U.S. mostly during the winter months.

Crotty said officials are "on top of their game," just as they were after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and multiple hurricane strikes in 2004. "We are prepared to deal with any situation as it may emerge," he said. "This has not begun to play out yet at this point. ... We're prepared to do deal with this as is appropriate in the days ahead."

At Orlando International Airport, almost all passengers on an incoming Aeromexico flight Thursday afternoon wore blue masks provided at the airport in Mexico City, passengers said. Irene and Jorge Flores of Mexico were on their way to Miami for a family cruise reunion but said they would have postponed their plans if they hadn't been arranged a year in advance. Irene Flores, 43, held up her mask and a bottle of hand sanitizer and pronounced the swine-flu situation "scary."

"We are afraid of people sneezing or talking to you in crowded areas," she said.

Well while this article won't be popular because it does NOT feed the "we are all going to die mentality" the media seems to be pushing.

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1895184_1895183_1895182,00.html

"A computer model by researchers at Northwestern University estimated that even if nothing were done to slow the spread of the disease from now on, by the end of May the U.S. would have only about 1,700 cases. The good news is that H1N1 is hitting North America at the tail end of its flu season. It's possible that the virus may peter out and re-appear next autumn, but that gives us months to prepare."

Article has a lot of other good advice.

And before you say "we have more cases then that now" Do we? We have more people at the MD, ER etc (as this article points out everyone with the sniffles has now gone to the ER just to clog up the medical system!) But how many of those are really this disease and how many are things like the common cold, seasonal allergies, etc. (you can have a low grade fever with the common cold for example) If you really LOOK there's a LARGE disconnect between "reports" and "confirmed" Once again this may be due to the overall inefficiecies in the US "reporting" system. One thing the CDC is watching for example is prescriptions for Tamiflu. If you have "quick writing" Doctor Jones who prescribes just to get the patient off the phone....... (And the aritcle points that that taking this when you do not need it is bad and may make you sicker later!)

I like to read article from both ends of the spectrum, so thank you for this. The interesting thing is that I just read an article that while the Mexico numbers have risen due to the new lab tests, they have also reduced the number of "probable" cases by the 100's because those tests came back conclusively negative. They are also saying that people coming into the hospitals in Mexico with symptoms have dropped drastically since last week.

I'm not ready to go around patting ourselves on the back, but I really think at the current rate of vigilance here in the USA things may look a lot better within a week or 2.
