Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Tamiflu is okay in children 1 and older according to my ped and my sister (MPH with PDH). I think Relenza is safe as well :)

Hi,

Do you know what happens if an infant under a year old gets the flu? Are there any medications that are safe for them? Thanks!

I don't know that IS a good question...
Was also thinking, what if you DON'T use tamiflu or the other one at all? When I was in High School and Middle School I remember getting the regular strain and not using any types of meds...this was only like 10 years ago maybe?

Update from the local news:

IF the pandemic alert goes to level 6 (it's currently level 5)
And
IF a case is confirmed in Orange or Osceola County (currently awaiting results)

Then the theme parks will be shut down.

*Donning flame proof suit*

Seriously guys, don't shoot the messenger. This is according to the local news, and allegedly based on the state pandemic response plan that has been in place for years. Just thought those of you with upcoming trips should be aware of the possibility.

The heart attack numbers from the DIS will far outnumber the deaths from swine flu if WDW closes.

:eek:I thought we were not allowed to post about political or religious things. (it's a site about discovering Islam) I feel stupid for going to it.....guess there is one born every minute...

I reported the post. It should be deleted soon! Run a spybot on your system and edit your post above to not include the address in your quote.

I do have internet access at the condo. I will try to remember to give the updates while there.

I also want to add that this might not be the best time to be commando at the parks. One's immunity gets lowered with lack of sleep. Just something to think about.

Hey Shannon! Another Chicagoan here! We leave tomorrow too...technically Sat morning at 3am. We're also driving and staying offsite in a condo (Sheraton Vistana). Just finished packing! :thumbsup2

I have to say that I am definitely more aware of our risks going down there, but we are just going to take our purell and take our precautions just like everyone else. Not much more we can do!

Maybe we'll see you on the road...if we do, we'll spray some lysol in the air so you know it's a fellow DIS'er! :rotfl: :goodvibes

Good luck managing the parks...it's going to be a bit of a "different" kind of trip, but we are looking forward to it...have fun, and we'll see you there!

We had a local scare today. An email from someone that worked at a clinic said that they had a confirmed case. Someone called the local health departmet to ask about it. They denied it. Who knows. Maybe there really is a confirmed case and the health department won't acknowledge it until verified by CDC or they don't want a panic. :confused3

Our local stores are out of Purell, etc. Instead of the liquid stuff, I've been using for years the small packs of alcohol wipes that you get in the diabetic area of the store. 100 packets for $1.35 You can divide up the packets between the people in your party, you can fly with them, they work on hands, railings or handles, and a couple work fine on a table top. Much better deal.:thumbsup2

Same here...went to 2 Targets, 2 Walmarts , CVS, Costco, Sam's Club, and Walgreens...no hand sanitizer to be had!:scared1:

We need it for people visiting our aunt who has been recieving Chemo for stage IV breast cancer so its a necessary thing around here. Just for curiosity we checked the web sites for Sams and Costco and still none to be had...when it does come in, do you think it will be what...around $20 per bottle???:confused3

Thanks for the input on the diabetic wipes, never thought of that and I am sure that will work too!

I get what you are saying, however, we all buckle ourselves and our children into our cars everyday nowing very well that there are idiots out there that should not be on the roads. Personally, I will not live my life in fear of dying. Now, I respect everyones opinion, but it is your opinion not mine. Everyone needs to make their own INFORMED opinion on going. I dont post b/c I am cast, and I love to read what guests are "talking" about, that is how I know none of my friends are sick. Of course I dont know all cast. I think that we all need to respect eachothers opinion on the matter, if you are going to WDW talk to a doctor that knows your family health history.
:grouphug:

Have a magical evening!

Well I do not think you do know what I am saying. But I feel pretty special that even though you are cast and never post (well 3 others before this one) you felt that my post said something that "got to you" for you to come out and speak your peace. I NEVER once said that I live my life with a fear of dying. I also do not go around worrying about every illness going around. If you look at my ticker yoiu will see that I have been to Disney 3 other times before this. Last trip I had a 4 month old baby. So if I had a fear of dying or getting sick guess what......Disney is the LAST place I would bring my young kids to. Not my last trip but the one before it one of my sons got strep throat and had a fever of 105. We rushed him to celebrations at midnight. The Dr. there said that the amount of germs and illnesses at Disney is like a daycare on steroids. He also said that there was a big chance that he got it from putting the pool water in his mouth. Guess what cast member......we went back to Disney the next year AND believe it or not we actually let our kids swim in the pool. OH NO!! Everything in that post was about what OTHERS had said about why they were going and what they were going to do. I am sick of hearing from everyone that is choosing to go that anyone that is considering rescheduling there trip is somebody that is afraid to live, not living their life, should just lock themself in the house........ Now why such rude statements? Because some people have decided that they did not want to take the risk. What is soooo wrong about that?? We are talking about taking a VACATION not being called to duty for our country. It is pretty funny b/c if you go back and read from the beginning one of your co-workers said that there are many people that work at Disney that have family in Mexico and could easily go for a visit and bring it back. Not sure if it was the same person, but I think it was, also said that she would not go to work if that happened. So am I happy that you and your friends are healthy. OF COURSE! Do I think that if I want to realize that pixie dust is fake but the swine flu is real and I should wait and see where this is going before I deside what to do is wrong? NO! I can not find ONE thing in that statement that says that I do not LIVE LIFE. That I am afraid of dying. Do I regret posting on this thread. YES.
But you know what. Not everyone that smokes gets lung cancer but after hearing the risks I choose not to smoke. Should I consider myself a hermit and somebody that is only thinking of the "what ifs." Maybe I should not go to the mall b/c there are going to be people smoking outside the entrance door and I might inhale some of the smoke. Not everyone that enjoys sitting in the sun to get a tan gets skin cancer. But me "debby downer" has looked at the risk and decided that it was not a risk I was willing to take with my kids so guess what. I put sunscreen on them. Maybe I should live a little and not put sunscreen on them. Screw the "what ifs" and if they get cancer, oh well we are all going to die anyway right?! Now here is the kicker. I also do not believe that everything the goverment does is in the best interest of the people. If they were sooo concerned with keeping the public safe and it was our lives that were so important and not the end dollar then why do they know that seatbelts save lives, guess only my TV is giving out that information, but do not install seat belts in every single school bus in the U.S? IT COSTS TO MUCH MONEY! Isn't it funny that a police man can give me a ticket if I was choosing to be a rebel one day and decided not to buckle my kids in their seats but yet it is ok to sit on a school bus without a seatbelt. Let me quess...If I am so worried about my kids being buckled in I should drive them myself. Right?! The goverment KNOWS that smoking can kill you. But for some unknow reason they have decided that it is fun to throw caution to the wind and not ban smoking. My mother smokes and I truly believe that people should ALWAYS do what is best for their family but please don't act like I live in a bubble just b/c I am comparing the risks with the benefits on taking a friggen vacation and I do not think that the goverment works in our best interest all the time. Oh nooooo, I think I just turned into a munk!

But since you are a CM can you tell me what they are going to do if the swine flu does spread through WDW b/c I do not feel like calling and sitting on hold when I have you right here. Have a Magical Night!:grouphug:

Well I am done with this thread. I 100% think that EVERYONE should do what works best for their family. No matter what others are choosing for their families. But I also think that those that decide to think about if they should or should not postpone their trip should not have to find link after link to show to those that are going why they are deciding to stay home. Do what you want but be polite to those that choose to do different. You don't have to agree with the other person but you should be respectful. I hope everyone that goes has a fun, safe, healthy vacation. I hope by the time my trip comes up this whole thing will have come to an end. But until then I have to go finish building my bomb shelter.

When the black plague hit Europe millions died. People where so scared they started looking for someone to blame, strangers anyone who was the slightest bit different and the jews all came under attack. Many jewish families perished for this stupidity, why do I bring it up in a thread on swine flu? The hysteria that the totally irresponsible reporting by the tabloid media to frighten people could cause the same thing to happen again. As a species we have overcome many more dangerous diseases than this one, if we where so weak we would have become extinct from all the plagues that have gone through the planet. We must pull back from the hysteria that the media wants us to be in, listen carefully to what the trained people are saying not some hack reporter whose only knowledge of medical information is what they have got from google. Be careful but don't let fear stop you from living we have survived worse and we will survive this.

Hey Mex~
I hope your first hand knowledge is not b/c you are a therapist b/c I am sorry but you missed the point of my post by a mile! Maybe you just joined in the thread and have not been reading what some people have been saying. EVERY situation I wrote about was something that SOMEONE else on this thread has said. So thanks for the "hug" but you may want to start on page one and give your knowledge, advise about cancelling trips and hugs to the people that actually said these things. So no disrespect, and I am certainly not judging you but this is TEXTBOOK PRETENTIOUS behaivor.

Phew - glad you don't really feel this way! Wasn't sure, but it was pretty accurate re: how the OCD mind works. Even the way you typed it was spot on. I'm not a therapist, but I actually have a form off OC and so does one of my family members, so I have lots of experience with this hidden form of mental illness. I should clarify that the OCD mind also experiences extreme anxiety when faced with the thoughts your described in your original post. It's the anxiety which makes it OC. Enough to make them go through all sorts of counting and rituals, checking and double checking. It can reach the point where the person is literally incapacitated.

So - that being said - I hope you decide what it right for you in terms of your trip. I have a trip planned sooned (5 weeks), but I hadn't even thought of canceling because the rational side of me knows this will probably be no worse than a regular flu, which people tend to underestimate in terms of severity, plus stats are never this well published. So - thanks for clarifying your position! And have an awesome trip is you decide to go.

I have never had mousekeeping when I stay there and I go 4 or 5 times a year. We pick up after ourselves just like home, and mousekeeping have always left a bag of fresh towels and toiletries outside our door. I just do not like people in my room.

Does Disney have the little "Do Not Disturb" tags to hang on the outside of your door? If not, did you make your own? Thanks!

Disney has them. If there isn't one in your room - either near the door, or on the dresser somewhere - just call and ask.

As to Grace's email from the Doc, the same thing is going on in Fl right now. The FL doc sent an email out about the tourist at Disney who got the flu. FL officials ran to the news to say *No confirmed cases* and basically called the Doc a liar.

Here we are 4 days later and they have a sample test from Orange County at the CDC :rolleyes1

I don't trust any of them in a time of emergency :rotfl2:

Yes the swine flu is serious, but just to put it in some type of prospective, take a look at these numbers for a normal year. We have come to ignore the flu in this country until someone in the press makes it an issue.

Here are the total flu deaths from the report. From 1979 to 2001, the stats were released every two years.

1979: 604
1981: 3,006
1983: 1,431
1985: 2,054
1987: 632
1989: 1,593
1991: 1,137
1993: 1,044
1995: 606
1996: 745
1997: 720
1998: 1,724
1999: 1,665
2000: 1,765
2001: 257

Don't believe me? Here is the page: www.lungusa.org Get there and go to page 9 of the document. Then start scrolling down until you come to the chart for flu deaths as a separate category.

Just for your own information. Be careful, just don't be afraid.:thumbsup2

I can not believe the hysteria that is gripping the threads here and the world. It is still the flu. Pandemic does not mean that everyone will die, nor does it indicate severity. It simply means it has spread geographically.I don't know about anyone else, but the newsmedia has done an incredible job with drumming up fears beyond belief and suddenly now the stories have backed off a little. They are now beating to death Chrysler and Justice Souter. In fact very little this am has covered the flu.Last night on CNN the reporters were saying people are "overly panicking" and "overreacting". Um hello, the media helped cause the frezny now they are trying to claim that is wasn't them.Take precautions do what you must to make your family safe. Not everyone here is going to agree with you.We have 4 cases here now in PA that are probable, and several in nearby NJ that are probable. There will be many more. We should be thankful it is spring. If this were to have happen during the fall and winter( regi flu season) it would be alot worse. There will be a vaccine ,but not until fall when they are worried of a resurgence occurring

We leave tomorrow, and since we've rented a private house offsite we're not going to just lose all the money by not going.

I wasn't really freaked out at all until I started reading this thread. Normally I just freak out about fears of planes crashing and terrorists (lived 4 blocks from WTC on 9/11).

But that actually kind of puts it in perspective for me. I have had awful crazy personal things happen to me and when they happen to you it sucks. But I can't go through life opting out of everything. A giant rock could fall out of the sky this minute and kill me.

I'm a little nervous, but I still remember the SUMMER OF SHARKS!!!!! I think....er....hope....this will just blow over.

You can't believe the hysteria? :rotfl2::rotfl2:
I can't believe the amount of people who post to a thread without reading it :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
there is NOT ONE person on here that is panic stricken :rotfl2: You know why? Our leaders told us "Now is not the time to panic"
So we are all sitting here waiting to be told when the proper time to panic is :rotfl2:
Seriously ~ you need to read the thread completely before you post. :lmao:
