Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

As I mentioned earlier, read the afterword in the book The Great Influenza by John M. Barry. Lots of good info there, and enough to really give you pause about the way you think about all of this.

This book was written 5 yrs. ago, but it amazes me how clearly he writes about what we are dealing with now.

Educate yourself. Best way I know to deal with this situation.

Forgot to add...

At the time of the writing of this book, the author states that there were 150,000 mechanical respirators in the U.S. Think I might have to google that number for this current year.
Sometimes, there can be a shortage of ventilators. But, not everyone that gets this is going to need it..I'm more concerned with the stock of Tamiflu, and people being noncompliant with methods to prevent the spread. I did hear that right now, they have plenty of Tamiflu.

Didn't I hear they have something in the neighborhood of 80 million total courses (not just doses) stockpiled for an emergency. I would hope that would be enough for any large scale outbreak.

You'd think so, except they don't. So I'm all for them starting to wash their hands...;) Better now (albeit late) than never. Maybe they'll develop a habit:rolleyes1

I was just going to mention this. I can't count the amount of times I've been in the work restroom where I've seen people leave the stall and head directly out the door without washing their hands. :scared:

so true! If more people washed their hands regularly we would have a lot less germs.

Oh dear..I think I'm not even going to pursue this with you..you're striking me as the type that will end up living in the woods, printing little tracts about how the government is a tool of the devil, how vaccinations are a plot of Satan..And Disney could most certainly deny you access if you didn't comply with the rules.

I was merely pointing out that if it's between you and the military, you are not going to be able to go out there and make a "citizen's arrest"..To be honest, I'm still giggling over that one.

Dude, good luck -something tells me you'll need it.:rotfl:

You must think Im right about the country going belly-up if so-called martial law takes affect....
Let the great depression of 2009 begin,,,YESSSSSSS....

Is it 80Million? I thought for some reason I heard they were only releasing a 1/4 of that. I could be wrong though as I've been hearing different stories all day.

I'm really going to be sorry that I've procrastinated on a report I have due by Friday and instead spent the day talking about swine flu. :rolleyes1

So it seems like nobody is cancelling, although one person stated they'd take a wait and see attitude. We're not cancelling either, but I do have to admit that with 3 little ones 4 and under, it will not be easy continuously monitoring all of them. We'll just have to be that much more diligent.

Alternatively, shrink wrap anyone?

I really see no cause for alarm with this. I mean if Tamiflu can make the swine flu better it's no different than any other flu. People can die from other forms of the flu too. So far there is only one death reported in the US and that is a baby. I wouldn't worry to much. :thumbsup2

My sister and nephew flew in today from Dallas, Tx to surprise my ds for his B-day. We are going to Disney Friday-Monday. I've armed myself with 2 full days of swine flu research and have decided this. We will go have a great time and spend alot of time squirting hand sanitizer into the boys and our own hands. Stay clear of those that seem sick and take our vitamins. Oh, and pack a thermometer. The only other alternative is to stay home and worry until my immune system drops from the stress and get sick.

Thanks to all that have posted wonderful links and information to help me make the best decision for my family. I can always count on the dis.

GENEVA (Reuters) - World Health Organization director-general Dr. Margaret Chan raised the pandemic threat awareness level to 5 out of 6 on Wednesday, meaning the world is at imminent risk of a pandemic from H1N1 swine flu.

"I have decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5," Chan told a news briefing.

FYI, Dr. Margaret Chanhappens to be the health minister in Hong Kong during Sars Time.

I'm not canceling. I'll just dress for the occasion. Now where did I put my duct tape?

This is intresting.

"A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.

Vivienne Allan, from WHO's patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths - all in Mexico - and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.

Sydney's swine scared arrivals
Face masks are worn by some at Sydney Airport, but many say strict new swine flu precautions are in reality 'low key'.

"Unfortunately that [150-plus deaths] is incorrect information and it does happen, but that's not information that's come from the World Health Organisation," Ms Allan told ABC Radio today.

"That figure is not a figure that's come from the World Health Organisation and, I repeat, the death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico."

Ms Allan said WHO had confirmed 40 cases of swine flu in the Americas, 26 in Mexico, six in Canada, two in Spain, two in Britain and three in New Zealand.

Ms Allan said it was difficult to measure how fast the virus was spreading.

She said a real concern would be if the flu virus manifested in a country where a person had had no contact with Mexico, and authorities were watching all countries for signs of that.

"There is no pattern that has emerged at this stage to be able to say that it is spreading in a particular way or it is spreading into a particular country ... the situation is continuing to evolve," she said.

She said the WHO was not recommending against overseas travel, but urged those who felt sick to stay home and others to ensure they kept their hands clean.

No decision had yet been made about vaccinations.

"This virus is not airborne, it's caused by droplets ... so it's not a time for worry. It's a time to be prepared," Ms Allan said."

Seinfeld anyone?? Poppy's Pizza...
Lets all do the handwash scene from "The Aviator".

Oh the POWER of the media....

CNN reported that 36,000 people in the US died from the REGULAR flu. Yet I did not see one thread on here saying "Should we go"?

150 people die in Mexico and PANIC sets in LOL!

Totally agree!!!!! Exactly my thoughts!:goodvibes

Get ready to read the WHO add another State. They just shut a school down In Lafayette, La. after 5 students tested positive for the strain and one of the students had been in Mexico over spring break.

Worldwide it's estimated 250,00-500,000 die each year from the regular flu.

There are nearly 6,800,000,000 people in the world....there are approx. 2,000 swine flu cases...do the math, odds are in your favor for NOT contracting it.

I swear that there was (this past season) a flu going around that was resistant to the vaccine we all get, am I remembering correctly??

Didn't I hear they have something in the neighborhood of 80 million total courses (not just doses) stockpiled for an emergency. I would hope that would be enough for any large scale outbreak.

They have extras because for the last seasonal flu, Tamiflu didn't work..I remember some years ago, they didn't have enough flu vaccine to go around, that was scary. I was in nursing school too and they wouldn't vaccinate us until everyone else got it. I had a pt cough right in my face(confused little old lady)and got the flu. I also ended up in the ER with a severe asthma exacerbation secondary to the flu..not fun.
