Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Get ready to read the WHO add another State. They just shut a school down In Lafayette, La. after 5 students tested positive for the strain and one of the students had been in Mexico over spring break.

Damn that sucks, I live outside of BR :( I have 2 girls and am pregnant right now. Sigh I sure hope that no one in my house gets it

So it seems like nobody is cancelling, although one person stated they'd take a wait and see attitude. We're not cancelling either, but I do have to admit that with 3 little ones 4 and under, it will not be easy continuously monitoring all of them. We'll just have to be that much more diligent.

Alternatively, shrink wrap anyone?

Shrink Wrap may be tough to breath in, however have you considered a lovely bubble for your children? You could color coordinate them...

I am not sure how I am going to keep my 2 year old from touching his face and mouth too.

I'm not canceling. I'll just dress for the occasion. Now where did I put my duct tape?

Yeah thats great!:lmao:

My wife and I have matching his and her suits!

We are coming from San Antonio on May 10th were there have been a couple of confirmed cases. I am not cancelling my trip as I am just as likely to get it here as I am in Florida. The media is trying to scare people and I have stopped watching the news. Poly here we come:cool1:

Maybe a sign of good news. Our local station just announced that in Mexico they are now seeing less of the flu or the media is now ready to move on. Maybe the Obamas' are getting a new kitten;)

Yeah, definitely a whacko site - all you need to know about this is that they're militant anti-vaccination ...home schooling to avoid getting the measles vaccination...just a little bit crazy

Wow, that's incredibly offensive. You think people only homeschool to avoid getting vaccines? Yeah dear, it's called an exemption...people can get them - even for public school kids. It's okay if you want to be a sheep and do what is "normal" even if it means getting brain damage from your wonderful vaccines.

Believe that if you will, but the FACTS discussed in the article are very informative and serve no purpose of selling, in stark contrast to most media outlets who want you to be very afraid so that you will continue to watch/read so that they can sell advertising. It is very difficult in this day and age to decipher fact from fiction when every stance is presented as fact everywhere you look. I for one am not a conspiracy theorist, but we all need to be careful about what is presented to us as fact in an effort to induce fear and therefore promote a product. Those here discussing the flu vaccine should have all the statistics to make an educated decision for themselves.

Protect yourself, keep your family safe and healthy, but do not panic or your sensibilities will go by the wayside. :goodvibes

I do NOT want to be misunderstood or accused of fear mongering. I write about phobias, including health anxiety, for a living, and I'd like to think I have a pretty good handle on sorting out panic from reality.

That said, I wanted to share our experience to help others in making decisions. We currently live about 10 miles from Disney, and my Dad's primary care doctor is in Celebration. He practices at Celebration Hospital, where ill travelers are taken from Disney.

We have a trip planned with my cousin and her husband May 1-May 8, to stay on property and visit the parks. Dad happened to have a doctor appointment today, so we asked the doc about the Disney trip. The doctor paused and carefully considered his response. The measured response was this: "I would cancel the trip. Disney is currently a cesspool of germs."

Now, Dad has some health concerns such as mild COPD, Hep C and cardiovascular disease. The doctor told us that Dad is at particular risk due to his medical condition. However, he did say that he is advising everyone who asks, healthy or not, to stay away from Disney for now. He also recommends staying out of big cities and large gatherings of people in general, but he repeatedly stressed Disney as a particularly bad place to be right now.

The doc did say that he thinks the whole thing is being blown out of proportion, and he believes the virus will be contained in the next month or so. But until then, he thinks going to Disney is a stupid risk to take. Again, he did NOT confirm nor deny the possible swine flu case at Disney, but he was very measured and thorough in his response.

As for us, we're postponing the trip until September and planning to hole up for awhile. Others may see it differently. Just wanted to share what we were told today by a doctor who regularly sees emergency cases from Disney.

Not to sound rude, but I think that Dr. is stupid for saying it's a stupid risk to take. What's stupid is living in fear of something that is treatable (Tamaflu or Relenza) and that has effected maybe 2,000 out of 6.8 BILLION people. My neighbor is a pediatric surgeon and they are headed to WDW tomorrow and we're headed on the 10th.

Fear mongering is total BS :sad2: and it's hardly feasible for people to live their lives in bubbles, especially those of us living in big cities, work in school, etc... total BS.

You certainly have to make the decisions that are right for you and your family. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, or with the doctor. However, my opinion is that a doctor who treats people coming in sick from Disney every day of his life may have a slightly better knowledge of possible swine flu infection at Disney than a pediatric surgeon in another state. I would, of course, expect your neighbor to have a better grasp on the situation in your area than this doctor would.

I think a lot of people on this board are hiding their heads in the sand, and acting like Disney won't still be there in a month or so when this thing blows over. But I'll defend to the death their right to their opinion. I won't, however, be accused of fear mongering for sharing information that comes from a reliable source.

They say the flu virus does not like sunlight and heat - so heres hoping summer stalls it in its tracks.

I'm just glad this is not hitting in January, with months of cold weather, heaters, and people indoors to exacerbate it.

Yes you will. I got into it on another message board with some of the people that believe the flu is no big deal. I was made out to be an uneducated, tabloid loving fool. (never once did I provide information from a tabloid, but did say some things that my friends in the healthcare field have said. I got some very rude responses) I hope that this doesn't happen in your thread that you were only creating to share information. I appreciate the information as we have a trip planned in June. I hope this flu and the threat it poses phases away soon.

I leave Friday and am not postponing. I sanitize myself and daughter when we go to Target or the grocery store----Disney is no different in my view. I will just use common sense.
I too think the media has hyped this beyond belief.
