Sweet Sixteen - Digital Mall Scavenger Hunt

OP, do you live in a friendly neighborhood? We planned a scavenger hunt for a Halloween party.

DD ended up not having her party (way too late in planning) but what we had planned was to map out a starting point and an ending point in our yard.

The hunt would have taken the kids to different locations in our neighborhood (which includes a small cemetery. Out of respect, the hunt would have taken them to a point near the cemetery, not in it) and at various neighbors homes who agreed to read the next clue and give them whatever item we had assigned them to give.

You can use your digital scavenger hunt this way too! Sounds like it would be a lot of fun!

my ds was a part of one of these games too-just be careful
they had to take a dip in the pond-photo
and when all their collecting was done they had to race back to the house

not a good idea swimming in the dark-naked!
or having a bunch of 16 year old newly licensed kids racing around the city.

maybe you could keep a tally board of all pics text messaged to you
the kids had a ball

How did you make out? We are planning on doing a mall one for my DD bday in May.

Our mall didn't allow it, so we did a Dollar Tree scavenger hunt...they had a blast. It was really fun (they are all 9 and 10)....I told them to only try to get things they liked (they didn't know it, but the scavenger hunt stuff was part of their party loot)...they had clues like Find something blue you can wear....find something that makes you smell good, etc. so they could use their imaginations...it was funny to see what the different teams got...some of the things were the same. They all loved the pics. They got points for pictures, each team had a digital camera. I've got crazy pics of them with sunglasses, holding bouquets of fake flowers, pretending to drink out of party ware, etc. it was fun to come home and look at the pictures.

I love the idea of the mall scavenger hunt and my GS troop will never let up on it. We had one planned and we wrote so it didn't involve any employee of the mall, etc. Someone called the mall to give them a heads up that we were coming and were told ABSOLUTELY NOT! The girls were so disappointed and they bring it up all the time. Maybe we could do one of these other types that you have mentioned here. Thanks for the ideas!

What a great idea for a birthday party. I have never even heard of that until now. I was thinking it would be a great thing to do for my dd's birthday in WDW. However she is only bringing one friend. Would it not be as fun with just two of them? Maybe her two sisters could join. (they are 9 and 12)

There were a group of old enough to know better (14-15 yr) kids at the mall the last time we were there, running around acting out of control. People were staring at them and that seemed to egg on the situation. Everyone's like where are the parents? Now that I think about it, I bet that's what they were doing. They came into BAB, Libby Lu, Limited Too and then we saw the group with 2 women in the food court eating. My Girl Scout troop wanted to get gift cards to the mall with their cookie money and shop alone (at 11 & 12!) no way would I subject the mall to that! I just don't think that's a good idea, the stores are trying to stay in business not clean up messes left by kids running in and out, grabbing things and dropping them wherever.

Just wanted to let eveyone know that we did the hunt last Firday at the mall and it worked out fine. If anyone would like the liste we made up to use PM me.

as a pp said a picture with a mannequin sounds so cute... but they should have to be wearing the same outfit!

Tinker*dust - any updates? Did your daughter get to do the scavenger hunt? What did she think of it?

I just wanted to chime in without trying to be negative. Stores like Bath and Body, Victoria's, Express and many, many others operate on something called conversion.

These stores have trackers and management has a percentage goal to meet of how many people come into a store and are converted to sales. I know the manager of BABW and she explained to me that during a slow time of year 30% of the customers that enter the store need to buy something and when a large group of teens come in and out over and over it affects this percentage drastically. This conversion number is important for payroll budgeting, her review from her manager and potential raises.

I manage a store and we do not have conversion, but we do not allow photos. I have noticed over the years a lot of these scavenger hunts (several on the weekends) and they are disruptive when unsupervised. They seem to be more manageable when they are small groups.

Glad your daughters party went well.:flower3:

I remember doing one of those as a young kid :rolleyes1 years ago. The malls in our area stopped allowing photo scavenger hunts after a mall shooting happened in our area in 1985. What they told our Youth Group leader was that the lady in question had been taking polaroids of various stores for some time before she went shooting...

Anyway, some things we've done with our YG is:
- A town-wide scavenger hunt where you give clues pointing to where you need to go, then you have something they need to pick up (or answer) at that location before they move on to the next location. At the end was a party with food and prizes.

- "Bigger/Better" - we gave each team a penny, then they had to go around within the town trying to trade that penny for something bigger/more valuable. Then, they had to trade THAT item for something bigger/more valuable, etc. We gave them 2 hours (I think). Then we gave prizes for the largest, most valuable, and most unique items. (Then, we turned around and put that stuff in our church yard sale.) We got a couch, an old TV, a broken bike, 10 bags of clothes, and a chicken costume (plus some other stuff). :)

Ironically...
They had to wash there hands in bath and body!
