Okay, so I have a huge problem with swearing/cussing: I do it way too much! I swear, I have the mouth of a sailor!

In an effort to not be thrown out of Disney for my potty mouth, and to keep my 3yr old and 2yr old from learning my bad habits, I'm trying to curb my habit.

Does anyone have any tips on how to stop? Swear Jar? Does it work?

I can have a potty mouth too sometimes. The best is to just try to catch your self. Substitute another word for the potty word. Sh*% became sugar. The F bomb became frigin' or freaking but I don't really want the kids using those either so foogie or fudge has actually come out of my mouth. For a while I was catching my just turned 3 year old saying damn it so I've tried to eliminate that or just use darn it. Good luck. I've also told my kids that if they catch Mommy using a potty word they can put me in time out. They LOVED that!

oh boy, i'm ashamed to admit every bad word my kids know (and they know them all), they learned from me. boy, that's a hard habit to break, huh?

funny story - when ds7 was about 3yo, we were at Disney Vero Beach, in the lobby checking in. DS climbs the stairs, we tell him to come down, he refuses a few times, then YELLS in his toddler voice...

"I not coming down, you f-ing/a$$/sh!t/h@le!"

omg! needless to say, EVERYONE in the lobby turned to look at the white-trash family standing there... definitely one of my most embarassing moments in my life! someone stopped us in the elevator later on, saying he remembered us from the lobby (wonderful!), and he's glad his kids aren't the only ones who say bad things (but that his kids never did it loudly in the lobby of a hotel). :rotfl:

I use words from cartoons. Like from spongebob, I say barnicals instead of the S word, and Fish Paste instead of the F word.....I watch way too many cartoons.....

Same in our house.....we've actually been really good at watching our language since our first was born over 6 yrs ago, but it was our 4 y/o that got us (mostly my DH) into saying "oh, fish paste" and "tartar sauce". I don't want my kids saying "stupid" all the time either, so I typically say "stinkin" and my 4y/o has really caught on...."oh, my stinkin' shoe won't go on!"...which I find kind of cute!

That made me giggle!! I was pulling out of target one time and was getting frustrated with the lady in front of me. Before I even had a chance to say anything my DD 3 or so said hurry up and go B. I knew I had a problem then. I have still been known to get totally out of control irate and scream cuss words but the older I get the mellower I am so I don't cuss as much. I also have a friend that gets offended greatly by the F word so that has all but dissapeared from my mind.

I have a slight potty mouth too. Our DD is a little over a year old and repeats everything she hears. I've been really good at curbing the curse words when she's around though, but it is hard work. I usually do like others have suggested and substitute nice words for the not so nice ones. An incident this morning reminded me to continue keeping my potty words to myself. We were driving to school when the person in front of me was going really slow so I said, "God! What are you doing?" then I hear a little voice from the backseat say "God!" Yeah - I wonder how many times she said that at school today when someone annoyed her!

Oh wow! You sound like me. I don't know what to do about mine. I need to stop the f word asap! Ill be reading to get some good ideas.

I started using W T F .. for the whole sentence and once my 5 yr old starting saying I had to quit that too.
I catch my self saying WHAT THE blankity blank blank , sometimes like actually saying the world blankity lol.

I have a 24 month old that repeats everything as well....we were actually at a superbowl party back in the winter and I yelle out "Oh Fudge", in an attempt to not yell out a worse word and my yells back "No Mommy, ****"....it was not good....now we say "oh fudgecicles", "oh sugar nuts" and "mother trucker" is a big one.....
The other day we were out and it started to rain, and he said "oh shoot mommy, its raining", and the lady next to us thought that was very cute....i just was thankful he said "shoot"

I'm glad to know we are not alone. My DS now 11 was 4 when we were looking at the tigers at AK. One tiger was pouncing on the other. My DS says "look mom that tiger is p*ssing off the other tiger". I've got this on video too.:rotfl2: I had to scold him while looking away, cause it was so funny I couldn't stop giggling. Well that word came from DH.

I'm sorry :lmao: I really shouldn't laugh at this. My mom always said bad words around us growing up but we would get our mouth soap if we did it :rolleyes1. I'm usually good about my potty mouth. The only time I have trouble is when we are in the car, people don't know how to drive around here  .

I encounter mostly adults in my day to day life and our CEO is the most creative 'cusser' I've ever encountered so colorful language is no big deal at work.

I have to really work to clean up my act when I'm around people with more delicate sensibilites and expecially when I'm around my friends' kids. I once got as far as the F sound in "what the f..." with a friend's 9 year old son in the car. I did stop and say "oops". He patted me on the shoulder and said "that's okay, I already know that word". :rotfl2:

edited to test

We usually say stinkin and 'shoot the duck' so now the kids say it. My 9 year old makes up words, and the 6 and 4 year old repeat what my husband and I say. However the 4 year old and I were at the store and this lady WOULD NOT MOVE HERSELF OR THE CART, even after I said excuse me, so he says loudly, Mom, that lady is really p***ing us off. Needless to say that is out of our vocab also :)

I'm a teacher...so I've had to curb the tongue for more than one reason.

But...I live with my parents...so my DD picked up things from my mom! The first word was s***. One day... something wasn't going right for DD, so, the next thing we knew, she ran into the room with us and said, "Gamma, I said s*** just like you do, and it didn't work!"

I had a terrible potty mouth for many years. I still lapse into it every now and then (particularly when I'm driving!!)

What surprises me is that our kids DON'T swear like pirates or at least, not for me to know about it! DH was way worse than I was, but he too has learned to curb his tongue. But our parents...oh my goodness! My parents are can be pretty bad, but my in-laws are AWFUL. They CANNOT speak to each other without using crude language.

It's a wonder that any of us are able to have a conversation in standard English! It was so bad that my in-laws had a dog who would not respond to commands that were liberally peppered with swear words. You couldn't tell the dog "Sit" - he only got it when you said, "Sit the f... down". etc. It really wasn't funny to hear a 4 year old telling Granny's poor dog, "Move, a**hole! Get your a** outside"

My foolproof method for curbing my potty mouth? Spend a half-hour with DH's family. The mere thought that I could sound like them is more than enough - it sounds so low-class and uneducated; definitely not something I want to model for my children!

I've curbed my old habbits by using substitutions.

Like the one Billy-Ray uses on Hannah Montana "Dang-Flabbit!"

Also...
"Darn"
"Shoot"
"Fudge-cicle"
"Dad-gum"
and the ever popular under the breath mumble
"sumunaeeh-hummerutter"
This one is reserved for stuff like whacking your thumb with a hammer.
:lmao:

I am a teacher so I have learned to filter long ago. My DH is just a very polite person and really doesn't use bad language around our son. MY family on the other hand, boy oh boy! It's like they have some kind of problem. It really bothers me too because my son repeats literally everything we say. So if they slip up, I make them pay my son!! Seriously, they have given him money before, it seems to work for us!!:rotfl2:
