Here's the problem - We have three reservations for the four of us - my mom has one ressie by herself, I have my ressie by myself (free airline ticket because of credit card miles) and my two DD ages 10 & 7 are on their own reservation that I made.

I'm a little confused about online checkin and everyone being on their own reservation. Since the two children are on one reservation together, do I need to call SWA and have them split into two reservations? Do they need their own boarding pass letter or can they tag along on mine? They have their own tickets.

Before all this online checkin stuff, you would get one boarding letter for your entire party. Does everyone need their own boarding letter? Could someone please explain a little better? Thanks.

that could happen if you were below the "threshold" for the next boarding pass eg you got there early so yes all of you would get A passes

but now you get there a little later, there are only 3 a passes left before the B passes are handed out, 3 of your group would get A's and the others would get B's ( supposedly, but do not know if this is "true" or not but it makes sense, the passes are distributed between all means of check in....online, skycap and counter, each getting so many ....if this was not so, then theorectically, all the A passes could be "scooped" up by savvy internet users )

If any of the following items apply, your reservation does not qualify for Online Checkin:

More than one person is traveling under your confirmation number.

You have a group, senior, youth, infant, military, or other passenger-specific fare type.

You have a paper ticket.

Your flight has already departed

so right now the two DD would not be able to print out boarding passes, so you might have to call to get their reservation split
although the gate agent would probably let them "tagalong" on yours if you explained it to them

you do not say whether the free ticket is "paperless", if it is there should be no problem doing Online boarding

one final note to add to the confusion, have seen it posted here, that some people have checked in ONLINE but did not print the pass out but waited to get it when they got to the airport ( this would be beneficial to people who have internet access but do not have the ability to "print" out )

but just now reading the website, it says

Airport Checkin is required for all routings in which a Boarding Pass is not available or not printed.

may just have to call and see what the friendly southwest agents say about this "procedure"

Each pax has always had their own boarding pass, this online checkin has not changed anything. Can they tag along on yours, no, each pax has to have their own boarding pass. I am not sure when you only got one boarding letter per party, but, I have never seen this.

The passes are evenly distributed between, online, counter, skycap and gate.

It is pretty straight forward. You get to the airport early, check in, get a boarding pass, get in the line that corresponds to your boarding pass letter and board the plane.
