Well I called about my skis as luggage problem yesterday. I was told that SW allows 3 checked bags plus a piece of sporting equipment. The equipment mut be 50 lbs or less and 62 inches or less. I was really surprised that they allow 3 checked bags. I don't remember any other airline giving you more then 2 bags. Is this a new thing or has SW always allowed 3 checked bags?

SW has always allowed 3 checked bags. According to their website a piece of sporting equipment counts as one of your 3 pieces. The maximum weight per bag was originally 70lbs.

So, is the weight limit for baggage 50 pounds or 70 pounds....We are waiting for SW to open June/July dates. Never have flown SW. 70 pounds is very generous!

The ski equipment doesn't count as one of the bags. It is 3 bags and also 1 piece of sporting equipment. Not that it matters to me as there is no way we are each taking 3 bags plus equipment! LOL!

Anyone reading this thread, and planning on taking 3 bags plus equipment, should doublecheck. SW website says:

The following items may be checked at no charge (unless a charge is specified), and will count toward the three piece free baggage allowance for each fare-paying passenger. All items are subject to Southwest Airlines' weight and size allowance.

I understand what you are saying. I saw that too. I talked to two different SW reps yesterday and that is what I was told though. Of course those SW folks could be wrong. I've learned that from Disney and dealing with CRO! LOL! The whole SW website is confusing and I wanted to make sure of what I was reading and was told differently. I am only taking 1 bag per person but would be very upset if I was told one thing and was not allowed the 3 bags plus the skis. I would definitely call and then get their name if I were indeed bringing 3 bags plus skis though.
