Sushi lovers, help me out

Here is a tip I haven't seen mentioned.

Mix the wasabi (green horseradish paste) with soy sauce. The more wasabi you use, the spicier the mixture will be. Dip your sushi in the wasabi/soy sauce. It'll clear out your sinuses, but that's one of the reasons to love sushi. :thumbsup2

You should not use wasabi/soy with sushi. Most nigiri sushi is made with a little dab of wasabi between the fish and rice. You do not need any additional wasabi in the soy sauce, unless you are trying to kill the taste of the sushi. Save the wasabi/soy for sashimi.

It's also inauthentic--in the case of sushi/sashimi that should be eaten with both wasabi and soy sauce (which is not all sushi/sashimi!) the authentic way to do it is dab a little bit of wasabi on top, then dip the bottom in the soy sauce. They should absolutely not be mixed together.

I mix them together anyway, but it's inauthentic. :lmao:

ETA: Also, real wasabi is not horseradish. What you get in a restaurant is real horseradish mixed with green food coloring. Real wasabi is insanely expensive so even in Japan they use horseradish instead. Wasabi in English is called "Japanese horseradish" and the Japanese name for horseradish means "Western wasabi."

A Korean coworker taught me to mix the wasabi and soy sauce together, and I love it that way. It does kill the taste of the first few bites, but once your mouth adjusts to the heat of the wasabi, it leaves a very clean palate for enjoying the sushi.

A Japanese coworker would have taught you the correct way to eat it.
