Survivor: Palau...official Thread

Actually, wouldn't it have been a one in TWO chance? The way Tom explained it, if there was a tie, the two people who were tied BECAME safe. Ian had immunity, so out of the 5 people, 3 were safe, so it would of been Tom and Katie pulling a rock. SCARY. :earseek: (visions of Pasqual are running through my head)
I think that it was one in three. It would have been Tom, Jenn and Katie drawing for the rock of death. Tom took a big gamble. Caryn did a great acting job. I love the comment that she was in her Janeu place.

This has been one of the best survivors in a long time. Better than the allstars. Some of the twists have been wonderful.

Last night was a great episode. Tom and Ian did the right thing under game theory. Greg would have been hard to beat in any final two showdown because Greg kept such a low profile. Breaking Greg and Jenn up was also a good idea.

It will be fun to see how this come out.

Well, I really have nothing intelligent to add. I really haven't even watched the show much, but last night's episode was great, and now I'm hooked (for two more weeks, I guess :rotfl: ) and just wanted to be on the thread.

And I thought their faces were priceless too.

my question on this got buried I think...but I don't understand the rock pulling

if caryn got 3 votes
and gregg got 3 votes

wouldn't just the 2 of them have to pull a rock after a tie? why do they become safe? I've never heard of this way...was this established in season of Survivor that i missed? the only tie I remember seeing is when pasquel pulled the purple rock

I don't remember how it played out in Marquesas as to whether or not the people tied also had to draw rocks.....

I do think that they shouldn't assume that pulling rocks is how a tie would be broken......the producers could certainly switch that up and have a new way to break a tie......originally they used to break ties by counting previous votes cast against them (which would be hard since Koror went to so few tribal councils).....so unless this year's contestants had it laid out for them that that's how ties would be broken, they really shouldn't be so sure that's the way it would play out......

Tom explained it all in the show, in a interview. He said that they were told in the event of a tie. That the two people who had the tie would be safe. And the rest of the tribe would pull a rock, the one who got the purple rock would go home.

So Ian and Tom were hoping for a tie, between Gregg and Caryn. Then Tom, Ian, Jenn and Katie would pull the rock. But Ian was able to show Katie the light and she ended up voting for Gregg so this didn't happen.

I guess every show, the prodcers change up what would happen in the event of a tie. I remember the one were who ever had the most votes from other TCs would go. I think that happend on more than one survivor. And I remeber the night that Pascale had to go home because of the purple rock. Very sad night.

I don't think that Ian and Tom can make it to the final two together, because they both can't win immunity. It will now be about voting out the strongest - if not next week, the following. I predict that one of them (whichever one can keep immunity) will be in the final two and win. I think when it comes to the vote, the jury will pick either of them over any of the girls. They've both played hard, but fair, and deserve the win.

Maybe I'm naive, but I'm envisioning a Tina/Colby scenario, where Tom and Ian agree to take each other to the final two.

If Caryn stays with Tom and Ian and doesn't join with Katie and Jenn, it's Tom, Ian, and Caryn in the final three. If the Tom/Ian alliance is strong and either of them wins immunity, Caryn is out. If Caryn wins, she'll probably keep Tom. I doubt she could win against either one, but her alliance with Tom definitely helped her get this far.

This makes no sense - and it didn't make sense to me last night.

The last time I saw a tie was when when Pasquel (sp?) got the "purple rock"...it was a tie between him and one other person twice in row. After the second tie - only the TWO of them pulled a rock.

I didn't understand why Tom/Ian thought everyone BUT the 2 people who were tied pulled a rock...I never heard that?

I read an interview with Jeff Probst recently and he was talking about the Pascal incident. He said that the rock system was new and they were a little confused as to how it should work. He said that as soon as everyone started pulling their rocks he realized that it was wrong, Pascal should not be involved in the process but it was too late, he had already gotten the purple one. He said he really felt bad that Pascal had to leave the game over a mistake on his part but they decided to let it stay the way it was so there wouldn't be any speculation about manipulating the game.

Thanks for the explanation all.
i guess it IS smart that way...that those who aren't being voted for have the "threat" of having to pull a rock and possible go - therefore making them not WANT to initiate a tie.

interesting...

thank you all! I understood how tom explained it...but it was just different from the way it played out in the past and I was confused.

Since Ian had immunity, only three people would be participating in the drawing. Katie had a one chance in three of going home as did Tom. This was a gamble but a smart one.

There has been more game playing and thought in this game than in most of the previous versions. I am really enjoying this season.

I missed that whole season. This is how geeky I am. As soon as someone started talking about "Pascal" and odds and probability I thought of the 17th century mathematician Blaise Pascal.

So Ian would of lost his immunity? That makes no sense. :confused3

oops! I forgot about Jenn. See what an UNremarkable player she is? :teeth:

Such a great show last night!! Just now getting to read everyone's posts.

My question is...Did Tom know that Ian was going to tell Katie about the change in the vote (voting off Greg insted of Caryn)? If not, then I am worried about Ian's "committment" to Katie. The preview for next week implies that Ian is going to do what it takes to keep Katie happy. I am afraid that the Ian/Katie thing may be like the Colby/Tina thing - that is Ian will do what it takes to take Katie with him to the final 2. I hope I am wrong!! I HOPE it will be Ian and Tom!!

Yes, there was some discussion between Tom and Ian about Ian telling Katie just before the tribal council. The thought was that Katie would prefer voting for Greg against risking the purple rock of death.

Thanks Bill_Sykes ! That makes me feel better about Ian. I missed him telling Tom about their plan.

Now to wonder what happens next.... :confused3

Who do you think will be voted off next? I'm thinking Katie since she keeps flipping sides. And then...Jenn and Caryn. I see Tom and Ian going to the end. :rolleyes1

For those who missed the show. Here is a small recap. You can also go to HERE, for CBS's recap of the show, with pics and video.

As the sun rose on day 31, Tom is quite happy that he is still on the island. Tom ends up takes Caryn on a walk and explained that he needed to stay true to his 5-person alliance and that she need to win immunity to stay in the game. By the end of the conversation with Tom, Caryn knows that she could be going home unless something happens.

REWARD CHALLENGE: FIRST QUENCHER Q&A
09.jpg

Reward challenge was a Q&A game, with questions dealing with Palauan culture and history. Each player was assigned a fire wok suspended over the water. When a player got the right answer to a question, then that player could pull a lever that could lower one of the others player wok into the water. The winner of the game was the player whose wok was still lit.

The reward was the chance to spend the night on a luxury yacht, complete with a hot shower, a message and a fest.

Frist person out was Cayan, then Tom. Next was Ian, then Katie. The last two were Gregg and Jennifer. Gregg ended up taking Jenn out, and was named winner. Gregg was then able to pick whom he would like to take with him on the boat. Right away he picked Jenn. Then Jeff told him that could pick one more person. He picked Katie. While leaving for the boat Gregg told the rest of his tribe mates that he promised to pay back the other members of Koror. Tom sent him off with an ominous reply: “Oh no, we’ll pay you back.”

With the tribe split three on the boat, and three on the island the plotting began. Ian, Tom and Caryn returned to camp each wondering about the pecking order that was shown during the challenge. Ian proposed a shift in the long-standing five-person alliance, thinking that if they were to stay with it they could be leaving before they are truly ready to leave. Caryn was happy about the turn of events, because this is what she was looking for, for a chance to stay on the island longer.

On the boat, Gregg, Jenn and Katie were handed some extra treats. On top of the shower, and the feast they also got their bathing suites, and got to spend time with their relatives/friends. Greg got to spend time with his long time friend. Jenn got to spend time with her sister. And Katie had her brother-in-law, because her sister had just had a baby so she couldn’t make it. They also got the chance to swim with the dolphins.

As the day wore on and day turned into night, and they were done with their feast, Gregg and Jenn approached Katie. Gregg offered her a shot at the top three if she agreed to a plan that he had. It was to vote out Cayrn then go after Tom then Ian. Katie agreed, jumping the fence and leaving her alliance with Tom and Ian.

The next morning, a boat took Gregg, Jenn and Katie back to camp, with their relatives/friends. While on the island, Katie and her brother-in-law were talking to Ian, and Ian gave his word that he wouldn’t write Katie’s name down. (I guess they didn’t see All-Stars??) As the sun was sitting the boat took the loved ones away.

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE: SECOND CHANCE

At Immunity Challenge, they were lined up at the beginning of an obstacle coarse. The coarse was made up things that the survivors have done in past challenges. The person who came in last after each part of the coarse would not move on to the next part of the coarse.

Part one: All 6 had to navigate a net maze. Caryn came in last.

Part two: 5 had to solve a land version of the water puzzle of the start. Katie came in last.

Part three: 4 had to eat three balutes, the half formed bird egg. Gregg came in last.

Part four: 3 had to unleash lock-boxes, get the flag out of the box and be the first to get their flag up the pole. Jennifer came in last.

Part five: Tom and Ian, had to target shoot. Ian handled it with no problem getting three targets in three tries. Ian won immunity!

After the Immunity Challenge, everyone headed to camp. Where Caryn put in an Oscar winning performance. Tom and Ian told her to act like she knew that there was nothing she could do, so she knew she was going home. They told her to do a “Janu.” She did, and did it quite well. Gregg approached Tom and Ian, to make sure that everyone was voting for Caryn, and made some comments on how she was acting at camp. Ian made slip that TC should be interesting, but Gregg must not have really caught the slip. Because the next thing we see is him and Jenn talking and he is very confident that his plan will happen. That Caryn will go home, and then they can go after Tom.

Right before everyone was to leave for TC, Ian took Katie aside to let her know that he, Tom and Caryn would be voting for Gregg, and that they were more than happy to chance a tie. Katie was really put out that Ian had approached her so soon before TC, and she felt that she had no time to really think about what he had to say. (In other words, no time to go tell Gregg and Jenn what was going to happen.)

In the end with Katie’s vote for Gregg, a tie was avoided, and no one had to pull out any rocks, and Gregg was sent home. Much to the surprise of Jenn who thought she and Gregg were very much safe.

Gregg was sent home with a 4/2 vote. Tom, Ian, Cayrn, and Katie voted for Gregg. Gregg and Jennifer voted for Cayrn.

( I wish I could find a pic of Jenn's face it was priceless!!! It had to have been the best OMG!!! face I have seen is quite some time!)

From the scenes from next week--Maybe we are missing the true "POWER COUPLE" here--Ian and Katie.... :scratchin:

I don't see Tom and Ian (its impossible at lease for Tom) however, I do see Ian and Katie or Tom and Caryn...these would be the choices--Gregs gone and I say Jenn is next on the chopping block sine there isn't any reason to keep her around now!

So you picked up on that too, eh? I asked a couple pages back if people thought Ian and Katie were "a thing" but no one answered.

I think Ian and Katie are more like a brother-sister "thing", whereas Gregg and Jenn are more of what I think of as a couple. JMHO, with the caveat that I'm a terrible predictor (see my Gregg winning prediction a few pages back).

I'm not sure the blow-ups we saw in the previews mean much of anything. At this point, the've been there for ages, everyone's tired and hungry and missing their families--it wouldn't take much to make me cry and yell! Besdies, they have to all be thinkng of their own best interests at this point. Isn't it Day 34?

I also think that only Ian or Tom, but not both, in the final 2. I think the others will vote out whichever one they can, really soon, while they can.
