That's right, any 2 DVC members can swap reservations using their 11 month window advantage so that DVC members can exchange reservations to any DVC resort want they request.

This perk is available to all DISboard members via a "Trade Wanted" or "Trade Offered" thread on the "Rent/Trade" Forum. Unfortunately, I suspect that very few members are aware of this facility and as a result these offers for exchanges and swaps are almost never used.

I'm hoping to simply get the name of these threads changed to something more descriptive like "Home Swaps" or "Direct Exchanges" so that more DISboards members become aware of this fantastic capability.

You can learn much moe about this by going to this tread presently on the "Operations" Forum: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1828078

Please let me know if you are aware of this capability and what your opinions are. Thanks so much for your participation - I believe this forum could provide a valuable perk to DISboard members provided more people were aware that this facility exists! As it stands right now, these "Trade Wanted" and "Trade Offered" threads are almost never used!

Best wishes,
Dave

Yes, I know about it, but I have not had a need to use such a swap before. I know it's available, and if I wanted to do such a thing I would post it on the rent trade board. Unfortunately, there isn't really a choice in this poll that matches what I just said. I could answer with the first choice, but I can't say I would never want to swap.

I couldn't choose any of the options in the poll. Yes, I knew -- but I don't think a "thread" is a good solution. I do like the idea of using the Rent/Trade board for such activity.

I was not aware, and had a hard time finding any swap info on the rent/trade board. I feel a separate area for just "trading" or "swapping" with specific requirements would be most helpful.:thumbsup2

 I am surprised. I have posted many times that I wish DVC would allow two transfers per year so we could participate in true trading or swapping. Nobody has ever corrected or enlightened my to this option. I will definitely learn more about this and agree with your efforts and in fact would like to see separate rent and trade boards.

Let me clarify how this would actually work:

It isn't really a "swap" in that the original members still have total control over the reservations.

Simply put, the parties would each make a reservation in the name of the other participant at their respective home resorts during the 11 month window. Sort of like a two way rental. And like any other rental transaction, if one party chose to cancel or renege on the reservation, DVC would not become involved. Both parties are assuming the same risk, and I would certainly recommend a written agreement between the two parties. I have never wanted to stay at someone else's home resort badly enough to go through this type transaction. You still would not be able to contact DVC to confirm the reservation, add DDP, make requests or add Magical Express, that would still need to be done by the member who owns the points.

Thanks for your explanation. I think there are occasions where someone would really like to experience another's resort for special events....VWL at Christmas, AKL concierge, BWV standard/boardwalk views at Food&Wine festival, BCV for storm-along-bay. Unless you are owners here, it is very hard to get these ressies at 7 mos. I really have no interest in renting, so dealing with a member would be much more comforting. JMHO.:wizard:

Since I already have the 11-mo home resort booking advantage for VWL, AKV, BWV and BCV, I have no use for "swapping" reservations with other DVC members. ;)

I've always expected that idea to gain some traction - but I suspect that the true hangup will be trade values.

Seems logical to me that "because I want yours and you want mine" should apply here and everything should just wash out. It's never going to come out "even" (maybe but very rarely). I guess a different number of nights for each guest skews the equation too.

It's a nice option but you're right; it could get messy. :(

Yea same here, BCV for spring break and VWL for XMAS. Can get BWV at 7 months usually and thats the only 3 we care to get anyway. Was aware, just dont care. ;)

I've been trying for two days to post a request of a trade of a 1BR for another 1BR in a different resort during the same days. Unfortunately, I got denied because there is a 30 day rule for trading ressies?

I don't understand why a 30-day rule would apply since I am trying to do an in-kind trade during the exact same dates.

I don't moderate the R/T Board, but do you already have the reservation made that you want to trade? You are only allowed to post existig reservations 30 days out. If you don't already have an existing reservation, then contact a moderator of that board.

First, thanks for your response.

To your comment, yes, I have a reservation. My problem is with the rule. I'd like to offer a trade for my XBR at XVillas from X/XX to X/XX for someone else's same type of ressie at a different resort (even the same # of points).

Waiting to get inside 30-days limits my ability to secure a cash-only ressie for the first day of my vacation at that same resort.

Since this trade option is only open to DVC owners, and it's in-kind trading, I don't see why the rule should be applied.

The reason for the rule itself is to discourage members from booking rooms for speculative renting. The R/T board rules prohibit that.

However, since it is for trade, I do see your point, but I also can see where pre-booking, even for a potential trade, could pose the same type of problem. You are free to present your feelings to the mods of that board via PM, they will discuss it among themselves, and come to a decision regarding offering pre-booked trade offerings. My feeling is they will probably still leave the rule in place for trades, but it never hurts to ask nicely. :)

Thanks! and sorry to the OP for the mini-hijack.

bwvBound,

I think your suggestion is exactly what the OP is really trying to achieve. Clearly the R/T board already exists... but I believe he is trying to make minor changes to make it more effective.

The current "phrasiology" does not promote the idea of swapping home resorts. However... if the existing R/T board changed the "phrasiology" to something like "Home Resort Swap Wanted"... the assertion is that it would catch the interest of more owners... and hence the R/T board would become more effective.

Personally, I think the proposal has merit. If I misreprensented the OP... I am certainly open to being corrected.

and don't forget, no free internet if you are not the member who owns the points.
