Surprise, Honey! You're Taking Me to WDW! (6/10) Coming Soon, to a DISboard Near You!

My vote is to use the points. My reason why is that my DH sounds similar to Ed in regards to my DH's often said line "How much is this going to cost me (grumble, grumble ;))?" I just know if I surprised him with a trip like this, he would want to know how much it cost. It would go down a lot smoother if I were to say I had used points for it. (Whenever we go anywhere his response is always "Can we use our points for this?"--to which I always brush him off as I want to hoarde them for Disney).

Don't forget too that DVC is now offering that you can rent some points from them each year to round out a trip (is it 25, I forget?). But it might be a good option for your June trip if you can swing it. I know I was excited about that b/c sometimes we've been a few points short for that extra night, and it's a little nerve-wracking renting from someone.

I know it's a romantic weekend, and the values don't guarantee a king bed, but would you do a value? I know it's not glamorous, but I would be inclined to save the points for the family trip in June. Have you checked the Swolphin's nurse rates? It looks like they may be w/in dollars of a moderate w/CODE, plus they you could play the "my nurse discount" card in justifying the trip.

Hi Kathy!

I'm back and all caught up. Plans look like they are coming along nicely!

As far as the birthday dinner goes, I can't make a good informed decision.....having never eaten at either. The only input I have is that I love to try new restaurants, so I would probably go with the one I have not yet tried!

Parasailing is a great idea! We saw people doing it while we were on our cruise and it looks like a blast!

If using the points will cut your vacation with the family short....use the code. Cut some costs elsewhere if you can. I'd hate to see the family vacation take a hit.....if you can do both (the long family vacay and the romantic getaway) go for it! :thumbsup2

I think I would probably save the points for the big family trip and use the code that was released. :) Good luck deciding Kathy. That fuzzy Disney Math always makes my head hurt after awhile. LOL!!

If you think you'll have the money for it, why not use the code? You won't have to worry about points and cut your June vacation short!

Sure! If Ed doesn’t want to go, I will!:woohoo::yay::)

Hi, my name is Kelly and I am a point hoarder!!!

If you can swing it, I would go with the code. Dang, I hate to spend my points. LOL That being said, my DH would probably prefer to spend the points. He is not the point hoarder. :)

Sounds like a wonderful surprise either way!

Kathy wish I could more help here...

seems like everyone has chimed in so I'm not sure if you have made a decision...

I guess when do you need to book on this code thing by? If you can raise the $$ before that then there is your answer...if not I can just see Ed's face if you say $$ for this getaway :headache:

I'm a new DVC-er so I can't even think of going not on points...and heck I already have the next 3 trips semi figured out on the banking, using, and borrowing senerios...crazy...

are you banking your use points from this yr? or did you borrow '10 points for last yr's trip?

If you use points for Oct can you do cash for the remaining 2 nights in June or a split stay? :teacher:

lots to think about...

J~

Sure! I think you are doing the right thing since you are the one that is saving money. It would be another story if you made the plans and expected Ed to pay for the trip. Ed should know better anyway because he is the one that got you hooked on Disney. If Ed doesn’t want to go, I will!:woohoo::yay::)

Uh Oh, Bill!

Don't go getting me in trouble with my girl, Tracy! ;)

I'm glad you don't think I'm being too secretive...

It's a funny thing, being married for fifteen years... we kind of don't look at it as "my" money and "your" money anymore. Other than a bit of spending money here and there the bulk of it sort of gets moshed together into "our" money.

You know, for "our" bills!

Most of which are related to "our" house and "our" offspring!

I guess that's why it feels so strange to be putting trip money aside without telling him. :rolleyes1

Hi Kathy.... I'm another vote for using the code. My preference is to extend the days of our vacation as long as possible, so I'd personally stay with the longer June trip.

Have any surplus items you can purge from around the house to raise the extra expense? I know my hubby would see that as 'found money' to soften the blow.

I say go for the code too... save those points! Unless it means you can't go because it sways Ed's opinion... Oh & thanks for the heads up about the code - I was waiting for an AP rate for that weekend too. I just emailed the new rates to my friend & hopefully we can make a decision soon! :thumbsup2

Hey Gang!

Sorry, I started my replies earlier, but got interrupted...

First off, I love the title of your update! I laughed as soon as I saw it because I knew where you were headed with it!

As far as the code quandry, I am not sure what I would do about it. Will saving an extra $410 be really hard to do?

Perhaps not... if I get the full-time job I'm interviewing for on Friday! ;)

I love the idea of the new rent-directly-from-Disney program! It could definitely come in handy someday!

Yes, Ed does figure that the points are already paid for, so in his mind he's thinking, "Why pay for a room?" :confused3

And my answer would be, "So I can go to WDW twice in one year!" :rotfl2:

Ah yes, the Swan does have a nice rate for nurses... and for cops! (Too bad they won't let us double up!) We did use the discount to stay at the Swan when Ed ran the half marathon and it was very nice.

The only drawback is that there is no Magical Express included with the Swan ressie, so there would be another additional expense...

Welcome back, Missy! Can't wait to hear all about your cruise and Disney Day!

Can you tell that I'm very protective about our family vacation? ;) I've convinced myself that we deserve a 9-night trip because we're skipping going to Disney this year!

Kathy

Kathy...Hmmmm I think If I was going to pay out of pocket I would stay at the POP. I think it is as nice as the mods and would save some extra Money.

I am a Travel agent and will price it out for you if you need anythign priced!

I want to plan a surprise trip now!

The number-crunching can be so tedious and frustrating.
Really, why CAN'T money just grow on trees?! :lmao:

I am so hoping to do just that, Jenny! More on that topic in my next update! ::yes::

Hello, Kelly, and :welcome:

Yes, I like to hoard points, too. Of course, that's because we are one of those families that is rather point-challenged. On our last DVC trip I struck up a conversation with a man who was spending the month at Kidani Village in a three bedroom with his family.

You read that correctly.

A Whole Month.

That's four weeks.

In a 3BR Villa.

Can you imagine how many points that would be?? :faint:

BTW, my DSS(20) is at NC State. Go Wolf Pack!

Last November we had to borrow 4 points from 2010-2011 because we wanted the Savanna-View at Kidani. The June trip will be mostly this year's points and just a few borrowed if we want to stay the full nine nights (Those weekends are a killer, aren't they?!)

So yes, I would prefer to use the Code for the weekend if I could. I dislike split stays, they have given me headaches in the past. :headache:

Last month I sold a clothes dryer we had sitting in the garage that was practically brand-new. (Long story short: two years ago our contractor goofed on the measurements for our new laundry room and we had to buy a new stackable washer/dryer.)

That did help with the Disney fund!

You're welcome... hope it helps!

I almost forgot...

pixiedust: for the new job!

Thank You! :goodvibes More coming....

Planning a surprise trip is fun... almost as fun as having one planned for you!

Almost.

Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know if I do!

Kathy

A WHOLE MONTH?!?!?!?! Wow, that would be amazing and cost far more points that I own. I don't think I could do it even if I had the points. I am always thinking..."what if we get to go (fill in the blank)... I might need the points."
Prime example: we are booked for August 1-8 at AKL and tomorrow I am booking BWV for December 19-23 and I just found out that my middle DD is going to go in April with her dance company so we will need points to go because no child of mine is going to dance at Disney World without her momma laying eyes on it!
I have to have those points for that :)

Congrats on the DSS at NC State. We are native Floridians so we say, "Go Gators" around here. I try to wear Duke blue, NC State red and UNC Carolina blue throughout the year, though. BUT, my heart does bleed orange and blue!

Hey Kathy!! You've got some really good opinions there, but quite a range of them too. I hope in the end, it was helpful :)

switch my ressie to Wilderness Lodge! LOL.

Am excited about your PTR and surprise for your DH. It's super sweet of you! I vote to save the points for your family trip, I can't let a good code go to waste because who knows when you'll get the same rate again.

I also vote for Artist's Point because the food looks interesting there, I have never been there, but now I want to go!
