Surprise announcement

Off topic from the whole special announcement (which I think won't be that cool at all), they're dubbing 2012 "Year of More Magic"? Really? Thats a TERRIBLE slogan, honestly. Can there just be a year without one if all they come up with is year of more magic? Might as well confirm 2013 as "Year of Even More Magic".

On topic, maybe they'll unveil RFID plans. Just an idea, unlikely to be honest, but just brainstorming.

2013 is going to be The return of the year of more magic the sequel

Because it will make the news. "Look at these people riding Space Mountain at 3:00 a.m. Disney Land and Disney World were open 24 hours today! Now check out this water-skiing squirrel..." Free PR. And probably a modest bump in attendance from fanbois looking to be a part of something different/special.

People can ride Space Mountain at 3AM on certain EMH nights as is (schedule on those days is like 8AM - 3AM), so yep, publicity stunt.

I know Tokyo Disney has been open for 24 hours on New Years and when Star Tours opened in Disneyland (Anaheim), it was also open for over 24 hours.

Probably a return to the "buy 4 nights get 3 free" like they did a few years ago....

I'm doubting it will be as good as 4/3, but perhaps 4/1 or 5/1, and maybe 5/2 for Deluxe or something like that.

The recent ads still seem to indicate that "Let The Memories Begin" will still be the major theme (in keeping with their two-year runs), so "One More Day" still seems related to a promotion.

The final day of "Let the Memories Begin" is Dec. 31, 2011.

2012 will be "The Year of More Magic." The announcement on New Years Eve about "One More Disney Day" will tie into the 2012 campaign. The announcement will not be specific to the Walt Disney World Resort. It will also apply to the Disneyland Resort.

The ads featuring "One More Day" are still saying "Let The Memories Begin". I haven't heard anything about "The Year Of More Magic" beyond a post here.

And didn't LTMB just start in 2011? They have been running them two years at a time.

They're definite calling it "The Year of More Magic," which is only a slight upgrade over the godawful "Let the Memories Begin," IMO.

Here's a link where Disney says "2012: The Year of More Magic."

I think that page is mostly referring to the new things that have recently been unveiled, plus the upcoming FLE, thus "more magic", although the page mostly rehashes the known yearly events. Not sure it refers to a change in theme.

I suspect the promotions offered in 2004 may provide an indication of promotions offered for 2012.

After 9/11, Disney introduced promotions that were unheard of. As the economy improved, they removed discounts.

When the economy crashed in 2008, Disney offered promotions matching the 9/11 discounts. Disney has pointed out during their earnings announcements that during 2011, they are having success reducing discounts even and raising prices.

I don't see how an announcement on NYE that the park will be open 24rs on February 29th would be much of a benefit. Most people do not plan a trip in two months so they would not really draw in a lot of new business.

An announcement that they are planning on opening a new PI area would fit with the NYE theme as PI used to be NYE every night. Although many on the Disboard already have seen images and press releases the mass public knows nothing of the new Hyperion Warf.

The other promo that would draw business would be one free day for each stay. Basically it sounds great but you really get an $8 admission to the park for each person when you stay a week.

I have no insider information but I can guess at the business plans Disney might have based on their previous promos.

It's part of the announcement. It doesn't mean it's the whole announcement.

They are definitely opening the parks for 24 hours on Feb. 29th.

It's a Disney Parks brand marketing announcement. It's something to get people talking about the four parks at WDW and the two parks at Disneyland.

Pleasure Island and the concept of a WDW nightclub district are dead (although the name is still Pleasure Island for the time being). Hyperion Wharf will be the new name for this part of Downtown Disney, but Disney has so far been unsuccessful getting outside companies to foot the bill for revitalizing the island. Disney has not even followed through on their own plans to build a small amphitheater at Hyperion Wharf. Essentially, Hyperion Wharf is on hold. There's nothing to announce about Hyperion Wharf. Disney is not even using the name yet.

There will undoubtedly be pricing promotions at WDW (but much less likely at Disneyland). I doubt that the NYE announcement will be used to announce a price promotion.

The 24-hour event on February 29 seems plausible. My guess is that the main focus will be on how and why 2012 will be "The Year of More Magic." The opening of part of the New Fantasyland at MK and all of Cars Land at DCA will add "more magic" to Disney's East and West Coast destinations." There has to be more to it than just the slogan, "The Year of More Magic."

Then again, "Let the Memories Begin" in 2011 was little more than a slogan and projections (which will continue) on the castle at MK and on "small world" at Disneyland.

I heard the rumor today that the parks, or maybe just Magic Kingdom, would be open 24 hours/7 days a week.

This prompted my first visit to disboards in 16 months- to see what people were saying.

24 hours on one day (29th) seems much more believable.

I don't think I'd want to visit a park that never closed. The wear and tear on the rides and everything else would be too much. The Safari at Animal Kingdom would be pretty dark at 3am. Are there even lights at AK?

Since AK doesn't even do evening EMH any longer, it's a pretty safe bet that park would never stay open for 24 hours. :confused3

Even though I've had an AP for years, I purchase packages when the price is right! ;) Loved the 4/3 and the 5/2. Seriously doubt it would be anything to rival those past deals, but we won't have to wait much longer to find out!! :hyper:

It is impossible for any of the parks to be open for 24 hours for any reasonable length of time. Once in a while, maybe. They HAVE to close the attractions for inspection.

But 24 hours on a single day? Not exactly a barnburner announcement and certainly not worthy of the heat being generated. It may be a one-off thing as part of a larger announcement, though.

I don't think the MK would ever be open for 24 hours a day all year long. This is the park where families with small children visit the most.
Children can't stay up that late, and they wouldn't have as much traffic throughout that midnight-6am time frame to justify being open.
