Support Group - 10 lbs or less

Hope everyone had a good week!

Friday = Weigh-In day here, and today is a good day! Down another 1 pound, which brings my total loss to 15 pounds! 9 more to go! Yeah! Single Digit Dance!!!

What a week it has been - like a roller coaster. Had my WORST EVER run on Tuesday, then BEST EVER run last night. Tuesday was hot, sunny, I didn't drink enough and legs were tired from the strength training the day before - I somehow plodded though the 28 min run but I was just spent when I got done - had to walk home the 2 miles that I usually jog, I just could not run another step!

Then last night was great! I waited until 7pm to run (hot and sunny again) and although warm, I drank lots before I went and ran all 28 minutes easily (I wanted to keep going but forced myself to stop and walk 2 minutes) and killed my 2 and 3 mile times! Was 45 seconds faster at mile 2 and 1.5 min faster at mile 3. Jogged the last mile home as well...finished 4 miles in under 44 minutes - maybe my tracking is off because that seems way too fast for me. :confused3 11 min. miles consistently? Is that even possible for a beginner?

Starting Week 9, all 30 min runs. 3 more runs until I finish C25K! :cool1: hmmmm...I think I deserve a graduation present!!!

good job you are doing so great!
I was supposed to run last night...but it was raining...and I took an hour and 15 minute nap haha. oops. must. run. tonight.

:welcome: Amanda and Carrie!

MMQ -- congrats on the progress you have made! what a huge accomplishment! and it's so inspiring to see the change you have made in a short time.

today is workout 4 of the Jillian program Making the Cut for me. i'm commited for the 30 days with a friend. last night was first slip with few glasses of wine and now i'm dreading the cardio b/c i know i'll be dealing with the consequences :rolleyes1

Karen -- you :rockband: your 10k! fantastic! you can so do it!

Thanks so much for the welcome!

I guess now it's time to be held accountable. It was a good week. Biked Monday and ran Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturday I finally bought a new pair of running shoes and broke them in by running 4 1/2 miles, the last 1/2 mile and cool down in the rain.

Now if I could just kick my dark chocolate habit, I think I might actually break through my plateau and lose this stubborn weight.

I love reading about everyone's successes. It's inspiring!

Carrie

Thanks ohMom! For me it seems like the progress has been painfully slow - I lose about 3 pounds a month, but it is still progress!

Had a H.O.T. run last night. Went at 7:30pm and it was still 84 degrees here. I ran the 30 minutes and was just dying... never realized that sweat could drip into my eyes like that!!! My mile times were decent, about where I've been, but I was compeltely exhausted after that, tried to jog a little bit home but only made 2 minutes and I had to stop....sad. Hopped on the scale this morning and its the same, so no gain over the weekend which is good, since we camped and I did eat more than I should have. Gotta do good this week - want that scale down another pound!!!

Hi Carrie! Welcome! Great job on your running! That is impressive!

I hear you about the chocolate! Snacking in general is my weakness...

Do you track your calories? Tracking everything has been a huge help for me. When I started dieting in Jan. I tracked everything, did it for about 2 months and had decent weight loss. Then I thought I had a pretty good handle on what/how much to eat so I stopped tracking, but kept exercising, but after a month had not lost anything! So I started tracking again, and started losing again. I had been eating too much even thought I thought I was doing okay adding the calories in my head instead of on paper! I do allow myself occasional treats and snacks, but I have to account for the calories - so if I REALLY want that cholcolate I have it, knowing that it means a tiny meal later on. Good luck!!

everyone is doing so great!
I ahvent worked out in 2 days. its the end of the school year and as a teacher I have SO much going on!

been a bit for me, glad i have moment to catch up

i started Jillian's Making the Cut program last week with a co-worker. we have been meeting to workout and it helps tremendously. last week got all 4 workouts done and have planned out my 4 for this week. today being #2. memorial day weekend complicates it since our gym is closed sat/mon.

i haven't weighed myself yet, i expect a small change but the reality is that I still have couple inches around my gut before my pants/shorts button easily

i have been working on the snacking too -- nothing after dinner. last night allmost caved but realized it was 9 p.m. and just got ready for bed instead. yesterday afternoon while scrapbooking I thought i'll have just 2 mini-candy pieces. i did, and ate them slowly and within 30 mins my stomach was grumbling and upset. wow. before i'd just chug 6, 8, 10 of those down one right after another and figured the quantity was upsetting my stomach. i guess it's a good sign that my belly doesn't appreciate a big sugar rush

carrie -- i agree with MMQ, incorporate some dark chocolate in every now and then so you don't feel deprived. unless you mean temporarily. for me, if i decide to 'give up' something it feels indefinate and then i end up binging on it. ugh

I've been doing well this week, weekend was a slip on eating and drinking was at a minimum (I think i had a drink Friday and two beers Saturday with dinner). I saw a gain and was overall feeling UGH on Monday morning :sad2:

Yesterday I went to the doctor for my yearly checkup. I'm 1 lb lower than what I was last year at this time (and I thought it interesting: 5lb higher than before I met my DBF :lmao:). Although that's a big positive for me since I've gained so much muscle since then.

The doctor asked if I had any questions/concerns and I mentioned I'd like to lose about 10lbs but am having a really hard time with it. I get mixed messages from people about eating, what to do about running, etc. He mentioned a weight that's 15lbs lighter than me as the average for my height  but was surprised to see I weighed so much when he looked at my weight. He said I am muscular so that would make a difference. Pretty much our bodies are very efficient and will work with what we have- I'm not going to lose weight by exercising- that's to increase bone strength and overall health and mental state. I'll only lose by cutting calories and I shouldn't be worried about dropping to 1200 calories if I want to. I have noticed gains if I get to about 1600 so I am thinking I do need to be strict for a while to get rid of these lbs.

On that note... Memorial Day weekend is coming up so I'm a little :scared1: about the eating/drinking that will go on! I've got my 10K coming up on Saturday though so I'm very psyched about that

Awesome article on running and preventing injury!! I thought of you all when I read it: http://www.active.com/running/Articles/How_to_Run_Injury-Free.htm

I especially found the walking part interesting.

Congrats Oh Mom on resisting the snacks!! and on getting all your workouts in! :thumbsup2

Thank Karen for the link to the article - I found it very interesting! Nice that you were able to meet with the doc and talk about your weight loss goals, and know what direction you need to go in. Good luck on your 10K this weekend - sure you'll do great! :cheer2:

After reading that article I'm a bit torn on what I should do after tomorrow, my last C25K run. I found 2 programs online that I like for training for a 10K, one with 1 min walk intervals built in, one that is all straight running. I was leaning toward the latter program since I don't love the walking intervals - I feel very clumsy and off pace when I start running again, takes me several minutes to get back in a groove and feel like I have a proper stride, even though it is nice to catch your breath a bit for that minute, and sounds like it could be good for the muscles as well. Not sure which I'll do, but I definitely want to have something to follow to keep me on track!

I too am worried about Memorial Weekend. This is where I typically fall off the wagon each year. We'll be camping with friends and lots of food and drink around. But I'm bringing my running shoes and I've already mapped out a route I can run on Saturday morning, and I will walk with a friend on Sunday morning, and plan to run Monday night when we get home. My friend is also losing weight so that will help a lot since we'll do some meals together. So if I can keep my eating under decent control I'll be okay. :goodvibes What I'm dreading most is taking the kids to the beach though....have to pull out the old swimming suit. I know it fits much better now than it did last year....but still not looking forward to it!

Hey, this group is an excellent idea! Can I play, too? 10 lbs of 'relationship weight' snuck up and attacked while I wasn't paying attention. I blame my BF. Ok, not exactly him, but the pizza we tend to default to almost every weekend for the last year or so. And my slacking on strength training. And the fact the days I'm supposed to be cross-training, I tend to be sitting on my lazy behind doing nothing. :rolleyes1

So anyways, it's time to stop the bad habits and get those pounds off. I was on the too-skinny side before, so my goal is 5-8 lbs. Been doing pretty good the last 2 or 3 weeks and am down about 1.5 lbs. Just gotta keep it up! Being able to check in with a group should help my motivation:)

MommyMcQueen - I think at this point I really do need to track my calories if I'm going to lose anything else. My problem is there is so much information and I have no idea where to start and what to do. Any suggestions? Also, I'm like you with walk intervals. My legs feel like jello and it takes too long to get back into a groove. I have to go with straight running. Good luck finding a program that works for you!

As for the chocolate, I usually have about three small pieces (Hershey kiss size) every few days, but lately the sugar has been flowing through our house. It's the end of school and in Hawaii that means candy leis all over the place. No wonder my city ranks 2nd in obesity and diabetes for all of Hawaii! Now I just need DH to toss it all out (he has more self control than me) and start counting calories and I think I'm good to go.

OhMom - how are you liking Jillian's program? I've been wanting to switch around my workouts so I'm not mostly running with a little bit of biking.

Those doing a 10K, I'm in awe and good luck!

:welcome: kohole!

well i fell off the food wagon yesterday...gotta get right back on today.

SB-- i do like this program. in fact, this is our 2nd time following it, we did once last year. last time i idid not even try to follow the eating. this time I followed (making modifications to what i had) but this week not as strictly. the workouts are intense, not for a beginner. it's 5 circuits that combine strength training and one minute hard cardio. most circuits i can tell my heartrate is really up there after that 1 minute. it alternates muscle groups by "push" and "pull" groups with 2 days rest inbetween. so mainly it's front and back. it's 4 days a week. she suggests running each circuit twice, we have still not got to that point. first 2 times through we did them once and workouts ranged from 40-60 mins

have a great day everyone!

Thanks for the nice welcome :) glad to be here. I almost talked myself out of my workout today, but got it done anyway. Yay me!:cheer2:

I've been skimming through some previous posts and see that there are some fellow sweet- and choco-holics here, so I'm in good company! When I'm getting that craving, I like putting about 1 tablespoon of Nutella in a little condiment bowl and dipping strawberries in it. Usually lasts for 5 or 6 good-sized strawberries. Helps satisfy the craving while still being semi-healthy. Pretty filling, too.

omg -- i am soooo frustrated. i have not lost a pound! i haven't weighed myself in 2-3 weeks b/c i knew i wasn't losing, but decided to this week after 2 weeks on the Jillian workout program and eating better. nada. nothing. zero. in fact i'm up one pound than i had been weighing consistently this spring..

Aww  I'm sorry (and I know the feeling). The only thing I can really say is don't let it get you down. I haven't been moving at all over the past few months but I've gained a lot of muscle and toned up so that's my only real savior right now to keep me at this!

Tomorrow is the 10K!! I'm starting to get nervous :scared1: I did a very light 2 miles yesterday and feel about as good as I think is possible so I have that going for me. I am getting nervous about what to eat beforehand because this is only my third race ever. When I run normally it's at the end of the day when I have been eating/drinking water all day.

The forecast is showing 68 and 50% chance of rain at 6am. As long as it's not pouring I think we'll be ok. Anyone have a Garmin? I'm planning on wearing mine but haven't worn it in the rain yet!

I actually have a spreadsheet that every day I log my food into - it then tallies how much I 've eaten and how many calories I have left for the day. I do find it helpful. When I log in my breakfast I usually also add what I'll be having for lunch if I know, then I know about what I can have for dinner, and when I'm thinking about what to make for dinner during the day, I can kind of plan how much/what I can have knowing how many calories I have left.

I do measure most everything for serivng sizes (cereal, milk, etc) but I don't have a food scale, so meat and things based on weight is more of an estimate for me based off the package. When I make large dishes like a casserole or lasagna or something, I add all of the ingredients when I'm making it then divide by 12 (12 servings in the pan). Most of the info I use comes off the packaging, but I do also have a calorie guide book that is helpful - especially for fruit, veggies, bakery breads items and things that don't have the nutritional info on them.

As far as knowing how many calories a day to eat - that can be hard to figure out. I've seen several online calorie calculators that can give an estimate based on your weight and how much you want to lose, but those have always shown quite hight for me - like 1800 cal a day. My goal is to be at 1200 cal a day, but some days I've been up to 1500 and don't beat myself up about it.

I'm sorry OhMom - I know how frustrating it can be. I've had many weeks where I felt like I was just killing myself working out and eating so good and would have no loss. It stinks but just hang in here! I had several weeks with no loss, but I could tell I had improvements in other areas - increased strength, stamina, etc. So you are making progress, it's just not on the scale.

Oh I forgot to report that I did weigh in today, down 1 pound...happy about that. I did have a good week - ran 3 times (instead of my usual 2) and did 30 Day Shred twice this week. Last night I did my last run of C25K! It was a great run - had my best 1M time of 10:05 (oooh so close to under a 10mm), did the full 5K in 33:10. So excited to have finished it - I really never thought I would make it all the way through. (I did a longer write up in my PTR if anyone is interested, won't write it all here.)

Good Luck Karen! I'm sure you'll do great! I've been going in the afternoon/evening too, so I too worry about running in the morning. I'll be out running tomorrow morning too, as a "practice" run for my first 5K next weekend, so I'll be thinking of you!

I would like to join the group if it's ok. Right now, I'd like to lose about 8 pounds to get me to 110. I'm only 5'1, so every little bit shows on me. I had actually gotten a little lower than that before DH and I went to Disney in January 2009, but it's just crept back up since then.

I haven't been doing much of anything as far as exercising, which is one of the things I'd really like to change. I'm a stay at home mom, so hopefully the girls and I will be able to get out and do somethings that will keep me from sitting at home and snacking. I'd really like to try to do the couch to 5k program, but, to be honest, I've never been a runner, and I feel silly doing it.

Don't feel silly!! I've never been a runner (I was that kid in gym class that couldn't run a 12 minute mile to save her life) and now I run all the time. Albeit not fast, but I've vastly improved over the last few months. In the past I couldn't even run half a mile let alone 6 (which I ran last week!).

The C25K program is just for people like you! Seriously, try it out :)

Hi DisneyMom1980! Weclome!

I TOTALLY have to agree with Karen! Don't feel silly and don't worry about what anyone thinks!

Since the last 9 weeks of my life have practically revolved around the C25K, I can tell you have in the beginning I had serious doubts that I could do it. I was scared. I was nervous. I was worried that I'd feel like a complete failure for not being able to even run 60 little seconds the first week. I did a lot of reading on it before I started it, and read many stories that inspired me and really made be believe in the program. Its a great program and it does work. It's not always easy but it's managable, and after the first day I couldn't wait to get out and do more.

I've "never been a runner" before either...but now I'm hooked and love it. All thanks to the C25K!
