SUPER-SAVE ME Pantry challenge 2.0

tonight's dinner is leftovers for DH and DD. I have the flu, which they both gave me, so no cooking for me.

JeMarie6--try shredding up the turkey and heating it up with some bbq sauce and have bbq sandwiches

JGoin-- yes you can freeze milk, there's two tricks to it. 1- pour about 1 cup out of it then put the lid on and freeze (it expands when frozen, if you don't pour some out it will bust the container-learned this the hard way :rolleyes1) 2- it only lasts around 4 or 5 days once you thaw it out.

To thaw it out put it in the refrigerator and give it a good 12 - 24 hours and then it should be most if not all the way liquid

Also as for the deer meat (which we eat all the time) we have steaks or jerky or stew, stir fry. Anything I would use red meat for. The key to keeping it from being gamey is to marinate it for at least 4 hours, preferably 24 hours. The more acidic the marinades are great.

I'm in! I have a nice full freezer so this should be no problem for us! We also don't use much milk so I could probably get by on the $15 for 2 weeks.

Tonight we are having:
Chicken Cordon Bleu (from freezer) and Rice A Roni. Frozen green beans for a vegetable.

Count me in. I buy so many groceries and cook so few meals! This will be a good way to get me in the habit of cooking. Not sure that will make my family too happy:)

For me the trick to having deer not taste gamey is to eat it HOT.

So, fondue works great. A roast, that sits 15 minutes before slicing, not so much.

just saw this, thanks!

My mom had that problem when my brothers and I were between 10 and 16 years old. So, she limited us to 1 gallon per kid per week, period. If we drank it all by the middle of the week, that was our problem. Give it a try, see how it goes!

Anyway, I'm in. My freezer is full to bursting, and I just looked at this weeks sales flyers and nothing good was in them anyway.

He has grown 6 inches in the last year, and is active in 3 sports (1/season). We can afford it, so it isn't an issue. The kids are only allowed juice, milk or water (except he is allowed 1 gatorade per practice/game--but we buy the powdered canister at Walmart).

That's OK, I watch the sales, cut coupons and rarely throw food out, so it is worth a "splurge" to me to buy as much milk as they can drink!

Dinner was eggs & toast for me, PB & J for DS8, leftover calzone for DS13, (DH had a golf tourney w/ dinner); DD has yet to come home from playing w/ friends...

Tomorrow is chicken breasts in the crock pot.
Friday is homemade crustables and snacks at baseball.
Saturday we have ball games out of town; lunch will be crustables again, so I'm pretty sure we will have to have dinner out, but we will be in a small town, so we should be able to find an affordable diner.
Need to dig thru the freezer for Sunday...

I never knew you could freeze milk............interesting.:)

You have to open the carton and pour about a half cup into another container. It is a liquid, so it needs room to expand. When it is thawed, just shake very well. My parents did this when we were growing up. Shopping for a family of four and buying ten gallons of milk at once. LOL. They thought we were feeding an army. And then the bread is another story.

I was feeling lazy yesterday so dinner was boxed Mac N Cheese with two cans of chili tossed in - not very healthy but DH seemed to enjoy it. In fact he ate the leftovers for breakfast this morning - I can't imagine how that tasted with his morning coffee:scared: I offered to make him scrambled eggs but he declined.

For DH's lunch at work today I cooked up a frozen pizza at 5:45am - let it cool, cut it up, packaged it in a gallon ziploc bag and sent it work with him. He gave me a crazy look but I thought I was being creative. He doesn't mind cold pizza. I planned on sending him with tuna fish but last night he said he didn't want tuna so I had to make up a plan b.

lunch for me today will be pb&j, orange and granola bar.

Tonight we are having BLTs for dinner and maybe a garden or pasta salad.

tonights dinner
POT roast - rice and veggies.

Lunch - salad for me/ turkey sand and tuna sandwich for the kids.

I am working smarter this time -- using the relly perishable perishbles 1st.

Anyone have and idea for heavy cream - have about 1/2 large container left.

Lunches today will be the usual mix-match for DH (I buy lunch stuff for him in bulk and he just throws a pile of whatever suits him together to take that morning)... and I've got no idea for me.

Dinner will be... Chicken Fajitas
Chicken Tenderloins (from freezer)
Green Pepper and Red Onion (leftover from where I made pasta salad)
Seasoning (Pantry)
Mexican Rice (Pantry)
Chips and Salsa (Have 1/2 bag of chips and I think we have 5 jars of Salsa in the fridge.)

Shells were purchased yesterday from Krogers with the french fries for $.99. I'm still sitting at OOP for the week of $2.76.

I really like this idea. It's forced me to see what all we have and how I can make it work. I found NY Strip in the freezer while I was digging for the chicken. I'd forgotten about it!

Hmmm...home made "cream of" soups usually call for heavy cream. You could turn it into whiped cream with a bit of vanilla and sugar to use in deserts (especially easy if you have a stand mixer). You can also add cream to red pasta sauces to make them creamy (doesn't take much). Alfredo sauce calls for heavy cream too, I think.

Thank for starting this thread.

Last week I actually sat down and made out a menu list for the rest of the month using the things I already had. I was motivated by the fact that the month had 18 days left and my grocery budget had only $31 left. I was amazed by the amount of stuff I had on hand. Since I did not have any ice cream left (which is the usual treat) I have twice made cookies from scratch and also jello.

This is what I came up with - the check mark means I have made that meal since making the list. I have not been to the grocery since making the list but I will go tomorrow to take advantage of some sale items.
