Sunshine states are the happiest, study shows

I agree that sunshine and warm temps can brighten people's moods and make them feel happy, but there is more to it than just the weather. The study also took into account things like crime rates, air quality and schools. There are four cold (really cold!) states that rank in the top 12- Montana, Maine, Wyoming and Alaska.

I have lived for most of my life in Maine, and that is where a lot of my family stilll lives, and that is where my husband and I raised our family. We moved to Arizona over a year ago, so we have gone from very cold temps to very hot temps, and from not enough sunshine to an overabundance of sunshine.

I have to say, we are loving the warm weather and days filled with sunshine!:cool1: Stepping outside and feeling the warmth of the sun definitely brings a smile to my face.:) Not having to shovel snow, not worrying about driving on icy roads, not having to bundle up in winter clothing, not being pelted with freezing winds makes me extremely happy!

On the flip side, like I said, we've spent most of our lives in Maine and raised our family there and we were very happy.:) That is where we wanted to live, for many reasons, including being close to family and friends, good schools, proximity to the ocean, very low crime rates, and an overall more relaxed way of living. Growing up, the kids loved snow in the winter and loved spending summers on the beach. We also always managed to take vacations to get away from the winter weather.

As the kids got older, though, (and more importantly, as my husband and I got older!) we knew we didn't want to spend the rest of our lives in such a cold climate. And, the funny thing is, all three kids are now living in warmer climates (two in Arizona and one in Nevada). Maine will always be "home" to all of us, but only on a part-time basis now!

I also wholeheartedly believe that if you (meaning anyone) hate where you live because of the weather, AND YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO, then move! I realize many people, for many different reasons, can't just pull up stakes and move, but I know of quite a few people that complain constantly about the weather where they live, yet they do nothing about their situation.

UMMM how is Alaska number 12 then?:confused3 Not real sunshiney right now:eek: We are into the darkest days of the year right now. Not alot of Vitamin D going on here. Although we do love our Happy lights:laughing:

interesting survey...who comissioned it? the Louisiana department of tourism?:lmao:
:rotfl2: That's what I was thinking! Some of those top states may have sunshine, but it's so humid there, that I'd stay indoors all summer in the a/c and artificial light! :rotfl2:

Come to think of it, my ILs do that in AZ, even though it's a dry heat! ;)

Sun has more to do with this then temperature. A sunny day in January with the ground covered in snow has the same mood lifting feeling as a sunny day in July. I also love being outdoors and there are more things you can do on a sunny day, even in winter. Well, not really more you can do but it seems for fun to do a winter hike or go snowshoeing on a sunny day than a gray overcast day.
::yes:: We have tons of sunshine here in Colorado, too and it's usually nice enough for outdoor activities in the sun both in summer and in winter, yet we're pretty close to the middle of the list. :confused3 Guess some of the other factors aren't so good here. ;)

I could have sworn they just came out with the top five happiest states and Utah or Hawaii was number 1. I remember Leno/Lettermen making all sorts of jokes about it... but Utah isn't sunny a lot of the time?

Hawaii ranks up at the top in a lot of these happiness and health polls. :) We were #1, but now we are #2, to Vermont.

And yes, the long expensive flight to and from helps keep the population down LOL...I just did that flight (Honolulu to FL) and I really don't want to do that again anytime soon. That was about 13 hrs on the plane each way.

We have a lot of sunshine and little rain here but we are 46th on the list. :confused3

I was born and raised in #46 California and now live in #32 Kansas. I'm a lot happier here. We have colder winters here, but just as many sunny days as California. The reason why we are happier here boils down to a few things: less traffic, better place to raise a family, less traffic, better schools, less traffic, less expensive, less traffic, cleaner environment, oh and less traffic.:goodvibes

Well I've lived in Florida, Hawaii, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and now sunny South Carolina and I have to say our weather is wonderful most of the time. We have a very gentle change of seasons. We are near the mountains so the humidity isn't bad in the summer and usually in the winter the coldest days are in the 40's. :)

As I sit here in state #49 I think ideal for me would be Michigan near lakeshore in summer and someplace warmer in the winter. We noticed nicer and more relaxed people at restaraunts and stores on our recent trip to see Orlando.

I hear the Carolina's are real nice and then someone will start talking about the spider's. EEK

I'm typing this as I sit in Michigan at my desk in front of full spectrum light box. Oh yes, we have to provide our own faux sun up here. I am not at all surprised to find my state at #49.

This is why we scrape together every last dollar and rent a house in Florida for the month of February. I wish we could stay longer!

This light box helps immensely but it's not the same as the actual sun. I'll never understand why people settled in the north. Sure, there are fresh water sources and abundant game and plant life. But hello, settlers! The winters killed many of you... why didn't you keep going south?!?!

This made me laugh. I always wonder why my family settled here. If it weren't for the fact that my whole family and DH's family are all here I would be so out of here! I'm looking at a overcast sky right now. We can go days here without sun. Even our summer this year was really bad! Yuck!

Add one more car to your freeways for the next week. DH and I are headed back for Christmas. Looking forward to stripping off our winter coats for a week.:thumbsup2

I could never be anywhere on that list besides FL!! Well, except an island in the Caribbean.

A HA!!!!!
can't stay away!!!!:cool2:

:)We have friends and family in California and must return to visit. Now, if I could only get them to come out here... I hate LAX, especially around Christmas. San Diego is pretty though. Go Chargers!

Moving to #14 from #31 in 6 months.

Send me a PM next January and ask me how I feel about it after living there for a while;)

hehehe

Like I said, it was 78 today, probably going to be that tomorrow.

I am sure the "number 1" state wasn't even near that.

A LOT of people fly into San Diego and rent a car, then go up the coast (skipping LAX!)

I also have heard that a lot of people are flying into John Wayne vice LAX for the same reason.

Yeah, I see a several states near the top that get LOTS of rain. The sun shines over 300 days a year here in NM with low humidity, no bugs, lots of outdoorsy people who love to hike, camp, bike ride, hang glide, and we're the 3rd fittest state in the country due to the beautiful weather, but we are ranked 24th on this list. Go figure.
