Hey,
We leave in 6 days!!!!

My 3 y/o fair skinned son has pretty bad eczema. Can someone recommend a sunscreen for him?

thanks!

DD10 and I have eczema and I always used Coppertone on her and it was fine. When she was younger I put atleast 45 on her but now I use 30 first then I change to 15 as the summer goes on.

My pediatrician told me to use Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunblock. Its good, though when it gets wet it turns white.. I have used the Neutrogena spray on ds's, and they were okay with it.

I have a sensitive skin child...I used Clinique - it's a little pricier than what you can get at a discount store...but it doesn't take much...and doesn't irritate.

:thumbsup2 Neutrogena is the only one that works for my son. The SPRAY DOESN"T! it causes him to break out in a rash. For Eczema I would suggest the Plain old Neutrogena in the blue and white bottle.
Well I shouldn't say only one- Mustella makes one that works too but it is a mess- solid yellow kind of stuff. And more expensive than the neutrogena. So I stick with Neutrogena(and we've tried them all from Coppertone to bullfrog to aveno )

My son has mild exema and vitiligo(loss of pigment) so he is "fair" in many spots! We use Solar Protection Formula Water Resistant Mineral Block. It only has Titanium Dioxode and zink oxide. That's it. There's no other crazy ingredients that irritate skin. It goes on a bit sparlky, but then it disappears. It's a bit expensive because the only place to get it is online or your dermatologist. I buy mine at a local Dr. office. It does last long. The tube I bought last summer is still half full....so it's a good deal and works great. Good luck and have fun on your trip.

DS3 is very rashy and allergic to most sunscreens. This is the only thing that doesn't irritate him:

Caution: their mineral sunscreen doesn't provide enough protection for fair skinned kids- mine burned after only 15 minutes with it on.

My dd5 also has severe eczema and we have found that some suncreens irritate her eczema more. I found a great article that talked about how suncreens are made up of chemical aborbers (which penetrate the skin), physical reflectors (which do not penetrate the skin) or a mixture of both. The sunscreens that contain physical reflectors (typically titanium dioxide) usually are less irritating because they are not absorbed into the skin. We've had good luck with suncreens that contain just Titanium Dioxide.

I have eczema and have for many years. the only sunscreen i can use and would reccomend is coppertone SPORT spf 45. Its not as greesy. the best part? no aloe vera (im allergic to aloe too).

My kids would get horrible rashes from sunscreen especially Aveeno (I was hoping this would work last summer when It was advertised as such), coppertone spary (any spray for that matter). Honestly the one that worked was the cheap Banana Boat (comes in a big tube...we have used the baby and the reg30-45)....it is the one my DH hates....he calls it diaper cream! It seems the ones that go on easy and disapear quick are the ones that irritate both of my dc's eczema! I have about 20 bottles from last year as we have spent hundreds trying to find one that works. Baby/blue lizard also worked BUT it was sooooo expensive! It was the Baby Banana boat that soothed the skin and protected great....it was just hard to spread....as DH says like diaper cream....the zinc oxide kind....it basically is the dsame thing! :) It you find another please post as there are sooooo many kids that could benefit from a decent sunscreen! I woould start with the Banana boat....since it is very cheap and go from there. Also...fo some reasonn the sticks cleared my daughters several ex on her cheeeks???? anyone else find that???? She had bleeding rough cheeks and the sunscreen stick was like a miracle????not sure what ingredient it was but I really should write a letter to the company to investigate this! Good luck!

Different types of sunscreen within the same brand can also be different. My son had a reaction to Coppertone Faces. After the reaction cleared up, we bought Coppertone Babies in the gift shop and he was fine. I had assumed since it was Coppertone, he'd be okay with it.

We don't have eczema in our family but we also never use chemical sunscreens, and two physical reflectors that we like are Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Formula (chemical free) and Blue Lizard chemical free sunblock. You can get both at CVS. I prefer the Blue Lizard because it sticks like crazy. Yes, your kids look like ghosts for a few minutes until the carrying ingredient evaporates, but it works and your kids aren't having their largest organ (their skin) soaked in chemicals all day long...

perhaps you could try a couple before the trip to see how his skin reacts. Better now than in Disney:)

For some reason Banana Boat like daisy1234 said works for my eczema kid. We tried several others that made her break out. It is weird that one works for one person and not another.

I have exzema and use the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin. I really limit my sun exposure by wearing huge hats and getting an umbrella at the beach so I use just a little sunscreen. It's the only thing so far that does not immediately make my face burn. I also use Olay sensitive skin moisturizer that has 15spf on my face but it's not waterproof.

We use and love vanicream. It has nothing added, works great. They have either 35 or 60 block. Available at drugstore.com.
