Summer Warning for Parents/Kids

This is not disney related but I had to come on here and warn parents of something that happened to me over the weekend. We had 90 degree weather and it was very hot. I took my DD (who is almost 2) to the park for some fun. At the park there were sprinklers and all the kids were getting wet and having fun! My DD was all wet and playing with the kids. This was a public sprinkler run by the city.

Well 3 & 1/2 hours later my DD was vomiting non-stop (4 times in 2 hours) followed by intense diarrea. She did not eat anything out of the ordinary (just some fruit and mac & cheese, crackers..stuff she eats all the time). I am convinced she ingested some bacteria-filled water from the sprinklers. I took her to the emergency room becase I didn't know what to do. Fortunately she was able to go home and was ok by the evening but Iam convinced that the public water used was not clean and probably contained bacteria or some other thing.

I'm passing this message along as an FYI for parents.

I'm sorry that happened. I will warn my DS to not drink the water when we go to the park.

Thanks for the warning-that is so scary! I'm glad your daughter is okay. Did you notify the Parks Department? What did they say?

I'm glad she is ok! Check the county health dept too.....they may need to check that water.

I hope you have other fun things to do this week for her to enjoy.

i have heard stories like this i the past on the news. ecoli most likely in the water.
hope she feels better!

How scary! I am so sorry you and your little girl had to go through that.

A few weeks ago, my DD-10 was playing with the kids in the neighborhood with squirt guns and got hit in the eye with the water. Within hours her eye was red and swollen. I had to take her the urgent care at our local children’s hospital (my kids ALWAYS get hurt or sick after the pedi is closed). Anyway- she had a bacterial infection in her eye and had to be on drops for a week. We were also advised to toss her $150 contact lense and get a new one.

Oh gosh, that must have been a horrible experience for your family to go through. I hope your daughter feels better very soon and has a much better rest of summer

I can turn it into a Disney-related thread by mentioning that this can happen in the numerous play fountains at WDW too, because some people let their toddlers play in the fountains with dirty diapers on...

Yes, yes, yes!!! This happened to us at Pooh's Playful Spot about 2 years ago with my youngest who was almost 2 at the time. I caught him drinking out of one of the fountains :scared: . I told him to stop but it was too late...the next day, the same thing with the severe stomach bug. It was the worst one I've ever dealt with with my children and I almost had to take him to the hospital for dehydration. Ever since then I have never let the kids play in those types of fountains..even if they accidentally open their mouth or something, it could happen all over again. I tell my kids that there are lots of germs in those things and I try to avoid letting them even see them.

If you look at the picture under my name, that was taken the very same day he ingested that water...

Anyway, I'm very sorry this happened to you! I'm hoping for fast healing!

Most, if not all, of the parks in our area have signs saying that the grass is watered with non-potable water, to prevent just this situation.
I'm so sorry this happened to your DD, sick kiddos are no fun!
