Ah, sun, sand, sea and lots of good books. That's my idea of the good life!
I enjoy light, carefree reading during the summer, especially books with summer settings and books about traveling. Here is what I have lined up so far:
Don't Go There by Peter Greenberg, travel editor for the Today Show.
Some of the chapters: worst airlines, worst hotels, worst cruises, air pollution, traffic bottlenecks, and so on. Very subjective he admits, but fun reading.
An Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderhoof. True story about a middle aged couple that spent two years sailing around the Caribbean.
Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion. True story about a professional couple (and their dog and two cats) that traveled around the United States for a year in a converted bus.
Jimmy Buffett and Philosophy, the Purpose Driven Life by McKenna and Pratt
Kind of self-explanatory
The Disappearance by Efram Sigel. Fiction about a young teen's disappearance from a small town in Massachusetts.
I can't vouch for the above mentioned books as I haven't read them yet, but they sound good! Here are a few books that I've recently read and thoroughly enjoyed:
The Ride of Our Lives, by Mike Leonard. VERY funny account of a cross country trip with his elderly parents.
Way Off the Road by Bill Geist
Route 66 Adventure Handbook by Drew Knowles
Mrs. Astor Regrets by Meryl Gordon
The Mighty Queens of Freeville by Amy Dickinson
Anything written by Dorothea Benton Frank makes for great summertime reading. Most of her books are set in the South Carolina lowcountry. Her characters are very authentic and she has a down-to-earth, humorous style of writing. Some of my favorite books of hers:
Sullivan's Island
Isle of Palms
Shem Creek
Bulls Island
Pawleys Island
The Last of the Mango Sunsets
I'm excited because she has a sequel to Sullivan's Island (Return to Sullivan's Island) coming out June 30th. Definitely adding it to my summer reading list!
