Summer Reading List - please contribute

What about some old classics

Daphne du Maurier: Frenchman's Creek, The Kings General, The House on the Strand

I just read "The Help". Wonderful novel but still in hard back only.

I ordered this one too. It sounded really good. I usually don't order hardcovers, but it's something I want to read now. I'm just finishing up Time Travelers Wife.

Anything by Harlan Coben....stumbled across one of his books and I am hooked. They are suspense/mystery. My library has a bunch of them. I just finished Just One Look.

Ohh. I love suspense/mystery. I'll have to give him a try. Thanks! :)

I second "The Book Thief". My DS14 wanted me to read it and even though it is writtten as young adult literature, I think as an adult reading it, you comprehend the depth of the book way beyond a "youth" can. It is a wow book that sticks with you.

I haven't read them yet but on my list next are: Firefly Lane and Girl With a Pearl Earring...

I read Firefly Lane! I loved it! :)

Well, I was thinking about reading some CPA study material at the beach, but I may need to take some of the advise hear and hit the book store instead.

Actually, I am waiting patiently for the next Stephanie Plum book to come out next month. I think it comes out while I am at the beach, so I'll have to hunt down a Barnes and Noble while I'm there.

I highly recommend that you read "Good in Bed" by Jennifer Weiner, its not at all like what it sounds like! :lmao: Read the description, the book is funny and well written, it made me laugh and cry. There is also a sequel that was excellent called Certain Girls which I also enjoyed but not as much as the first one! FYI she wrote the book "In her SHoes" that was eventually made into a movie.

I have read many of Jodi Picoult's books including:

Handle With Care: Finished last month. Loved the book, ticked off at the ending.

Perfect Match: Just finished last week. Loved the book and the ending.

My Sister's Keeper: Back on the best seller's list due to the upcoming movie. Loved the book, hated the ending. Wanted to toss it out the airplane window on the way to Orlando!

Plain Truth: Loved the book and the ending.

Nineteen Minutes: Loved it.

Mercy: Just started reading but intriguing (and a little disturbing) so far.

Keeping Faith: A little "out there" for my taste but finished it anyway.

Vanishing Acts: Got less than 1/2 way through. Couldn't get into the story or the characters. Maybe I'll finish it someday.

Ah, sun, sand, sea and lots of good books. That's my idea of the good life!:cool1:

I enjoy light, carefree reading during the summer, especially books with summer settings and books about traveling. Here is what I have lined up so far:

Don't Go There by Peter Greenberg, travel editor for the Today Show.
Some of the chapters: worst airlines, worst hotels, worst cruises, air pollution, traffic bottlenecks, and so on. Very subjective he admits, but fun reading.:)

An Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderhoof. True story about a middle aged couple that spent two years sailing around the Caribbean.

Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion. True story about a professional couple (and their dog and two cats) that traveled around the United States for a year in a converted bus.

Jimmy Buffett and Philosophy, the Purpose Driven Life by McKenna and Pratt
Kind of self-explanatory:rotfl:

The Disappearance by Efram Sigel. Fiction about a young teen's disappearance from a small town in Massachusetts.

I can't vouch for the above mentioned books as I haven't read them yet, but they sound good! Here are a few books that I've recently read and thoroughly enjoyed:

The Ride of Our Lives, by Mike Leonard. VERY funny account of a cross country trip with his elderly parents.

Way Off the Road by Bill Geist

Route 66 Adventure Handbook by Drew Knowles

Mrs. Astor Regrets by Meryl Gordon

The Mighty Queens of Freeville by Amy Dickinson

Anything written by Dorothea Benton Frank makes for great summertime reading. Most of her books are set in the South Carolina lowcountry. Her characters are very authentic and she has a down-to-earth, humorous style of writing. Some of my favorite books of hers:
Sullivan's Island
Isle of Palms
Shem Creek
Bulls Island
Pawleys Island
The Last of the Mango Sunsets

I'm excited because she has a sequel to Sullivan's Island (Return to Sullivan's Island) coming out June 30th. Definitely adding it to my summer reading list!
